Change of date for Tannadice Under-20 title showdown
By: Newsroom Staff on 07 May, 2014 16:15
CELTIC’S possible Under-20s’ league clincher against Dundee United at Tannadice has been switched from Thursday to Friday.
The game which would seal the title at this level for the fifth time in a row by the Hoops now goes ahead at Tannadice on Friday, May 9 with a 1pm kick-off time.
The young Hoops’ 2-0 win over their Ibrox counterparts at Lennoxtown on Tuesday means the ball is now in Celtic’s court and a win on Tayside will tie up the championship.

CELTIC…3
(Commons 53, Pukki 73, van Dijk 78)
ST JOHNSTONE…3
(Clancy 9, Brown 84, O’Halloran 85)
AFTER staging a superb second-half fightback, Celtic squandered a two-goal lead in the closing minutes at McDiamid Park to draw 3-3 against St Johnstone.
Trailing to Tim Clancy’s early goal, the Hoops could have been further behind at the break had Lukasz Zaluska not thwarted Stevie May from the spot.
The champions rallied after the restart and substitute Kris Commons restored parity from the spot, before Teemu Pukki completed the comeback with an emphatic finish.
Neil Lennon’s men looked to be cruising to victory after Virgil van Dijk smashed home number three – Celtic’s 99th goal of the league campaign – but somehow they let their two-goal lead slip in the closing stages as Scott Brown and Michael O’Halloran struck in quick succession for the hosts.
The manager made six changes from the team who put Aberdeen to the sword on Saturday, with Lukasz Zaluska, Mikael Lustig, Beram Kayal, Derk Boerrigter, Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde replacing Fraser Forster, Emilio Izaguirre, Scott Brown, Kris Commons, Anthony Stokes and Leigh Griffiths in the starting XI.
And Zaluska, making his first appearance between the sticks since the League Cup loss to Morton, was almost picking the ball out of his net within the first 30 seconds as Michael O’Halloran’s opportunist strike from distance fizzed off the post.
Celtic soon replied with a quick breakaway as Pukki picked out Boerrigter on the halfway line. There was no-one between him and Alan Mannus but, running at pace, his touch was heavy and the home goalkeeper reached the ball first.
Pukki looked a man on a mission in the opening stages, cleverly finding pockets of space in the final third to exploit. Another incisive burst through the middle from the Finn saw him felled in the box.
Matthews collected the loose ball and his cross was knocked back across goal by Boerrigter in search of Balde, but the home side managed to clear their lines.
It was an encouraging start from the champions but they found themselves behind before 10 minutes had elapsed.
Stevie May’s powerful effort from an acute angle was turned behind by Zaluska at the expense of a corner. And when the resultant set-piece was headed on by Steven Anderson, fellow defender Tim Clancy swept home.
Purposeful and determined play from Pukki when outnumbered down the left then earned the visitors a corner as they sought a swift response. However, Virgil van Dijk glanced the cross wide.
Against Tommy Wright’s well-organised side, the Hoops’ were posing most menace when countering at pace, and Beram Kayal was sent scampering clear after one such sweeping move but the chance fizzled out as the Israeli attempted to cut inside.
Balde had a shot blocked following a corner. Pukki’s venomous drive stung Mannus’ hands and Lustig blasted over as the Bhoys continued to press.
Although Celtic were enjoying the bulk of possession and forcing a number of corners, Mannus was being well protected by his backline.
And as half-time beckoned it was only Zaluska’s heroics that kept them in close pursuit. May had curled a shot wide minutes earlier, and when the lively O’Halloran was clipped in the box by Kayal, he was given to score from the spot. He attempted to find the corner but the Pole sprung to his left to push his effort his way.
Either side of the interval, O’Halloran fired over and Lee Croft was denied by Zaluska as the hosts continued to threaten.
And they were punished for their profligacy as Celtic drew level. Brown, on as a substitute at the break along with Commons, was felled in the box as he skipped inside Gary McDonald. Referee Steven McLean pointed to the spot and Commons took responsibility, hammering home his 31st goal of the season.
Galvanised by that goal and the introduction of Brown and Commons, the Hoops were now in ascendancy and they turned the game around with 17 minutes remaining.
After the Perth side had only partially cleared a cross, Mulgrew sent a precise pass back into the mix and Pukki emphatically swept home.
Four minutes later, they looked to have sealed the points as van Dijk reacted quickest to rifle a shot into the far corner after Commons’ initial effort had been blocked.
The Hoops now appeared in complete control but in an astonishing two-minute spell they contrived to concede twice. First, Scott Brown’s deflected drive beat Zaluska, before O’Halloran stooped low to divert David Wotherspoon’s cross into the net.
Anthony Stokes tested Mannus from an acute angle but there wasn’t be a last-gasp winner as the champions were left to settle for spoils.

I’ll stand behind what I said. No club has a 100% record on signings and there are vagaries that suggest good players just don’t perform in certain circumstances but flourish elsewhere – Brattback a case in point. We will continue to have a mixed return. Perhaps we should have asked DD for a loan and gone for Fellaini. His 28m looks an expensive gamble that failed.

I don’t buy this rubbish about Gary Hooper not trying during his last few months at Celtic. He was off-form. It happens to every player.
So he was looking for an escape route to the EPL and decided to achieve that by not trying a leg? Utter nonsense.

Derk should go home to Holland.
Kayal’s time is done and for 15K a week we can do better. Hope we can get someone in Israel to give us 500 grand for him.
I am firmly in the camp who say we could have got better quality in Scotland for the money we paid out on Balde, Pukki and Derk.
Certainly Armstrong and MacKay – Steven would have been better, younger, hungrier options but at least we left them where they were to stop Sevco.
As for a striker in the SPFL, there is no one who would be good enough. Griffiths can plug that gap.
