By Alex Gordon.
A DREADFUL penalty-kick miss by Bahrudin Atajic condemned Ronny Deila to his first defeat as Celtic manager.
The Bosnian striker had the ideal opportunity to level the scores four minutes from time after substitute Paul McMullan had been downed in the box.
Unfortunately, Atajic blazed his spot-kick over the bar into the Hamburg crowd much to the annoyance of the new Hoops gaffer.
It was a largely experimental Celtic line-up with Deila taking no risks ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Legia Warsaw in the Polish capital.
Alas, appalling defending by Filip Twardzik gifted the Germans the winning goal before the interval.
The left-back made a mess of trying to control a long and hopeful punt into the Celtic penalty box. The ball broke clear and was immediately presented to Christopher Nothe who could hardly believe his good fortune.
Nothe struck his effort first time from eight yards and Craig Gordon had no chance as the low drive zipped past his right hand in the 39th minute.
Twardzik toiled in the opening 45 minutes and was also booked in the 33rd minute after a lunging tackle after once again giving the ball away with a slack pass.
Celtic started at whirlwind pace and had three excellent opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes.
Atajic fizzed in a low shot from just outside the box, but keeper Philipp Tschauner got down swiftly to hold the ball at his right hand post.
Five minutes later, Tony Watt, looking lively on the left wing, tried his luck from a tight angle.
His shot totally bamboozled Tschauner, but carried over the crossbar and out to safety.
Amido Balde should have got the game’s opening goal in the 10th minute when he was through on goal after some neat play outside the box.
However, the Portuguese Under-21 international lacked composure at the vital moment and allowed the keeper to block his hurried parting shot.
Gordon, making his second appearance for the Hoops, showed he was still rusty after being out for over two years with a slack goal-kick to Nir Biton.
The Israeli midfielder, captain for the day, was taken unawares and St Pauli broke forward, but made a mess of the opportunity.
Stuart Findlay, partnering Eoghan O’Connell in the middle of the inexperienced back four, was also sloppy with some wayward passes, but the Hoops escaped punishment.
The game was billed as a friendly – and the clubs have an affiliation – but the home players weren’t slow to put in some punishing challenges.
Skipper Soren Gonther was yellow-carded for a rugby tackle on McGeouch that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Celtic’s current home at Murrayfield.
Liam Henderson tried to set up Balde with a neat chip into the danger zone, but the ball carried over the giant frontman’s head.
It looked like being a stalemate at the interval until Twardzik’s lapse in concentration and control allowed St Pauli to snatch the lead.
Deila put on Lukasz Zaluska for Gordon at half-time and replaced the ineffective Balde with Paul McMullan.
Henderson brought the St Pauli keeper into action with a long-range free-kick in the 65th minute. The idea was good, but, unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite match the ambition.
Zaluska produced one memorable moment when he pushed a raging effort from Sebastian Mhyre over the crossbar 10 minutes from time.
Then came Atajic’s dreadful spot-kick blunder which was followed in the last minute by an effort from Watt which swept just wide of the target.
As an exercise, it was worthwhile and the Celtic youngsters will expect to do better when presented with the opportunity to impress the new manager.
CELTIC: Gordon (sub: Zaluska 46); Herron, Findlay, O’Connell, Twardzik; Biton, Henderson, McGeouch; Atajic, Balde (sub: McMullan 46) and Watt.

THE EXILED TIM
The blog must always allow
dissenting opinions,ones which go
against the mainstream or even
simply make us think or delve deeper
into a subject.
But extremist opinions are poisonous
to any gathering of people,be it in a
pub,a house,a meeting.
In person those views can be silenced
by weight of opinion,or even by
ridicule. Sometimes even by the
threat of exposure for holding such
views.
On a blog,it is different. Extremists
cannot be silenced by the above
methods,nor by civilised debate.
Because there is no sanction
available to prevent their continued
venting.

One thing I do know is that for all the words printed on this blog and others including the MSM not one of those words will help to solve the Israel Palestine situation .We can only pray to the Good Lord to intervene and to stop the killing obviously if you are a non believer you wont pray but will continue to believe that mere men can solve this age old problem.I however, believe that prayer can and will help so I ask the Lord to strengthen the men of peace on both sides and to bring about a lasting peace to the people of both Countries. As I said I dont know how it would work in practice,
But I feel for the sake of the blogs survival as we are losing too many good posters who no longer wish to be in the middle of discussions that they have no interest in.
Sadly we be reaching the point where certain guidelines (I know ,I know) are going to have to be set out.
Another thread where contentious subjects that dont involve football or the Celtic can be discussed ,debated ,argued even fought over
What/who decides what is offensive contentious is the problem though,so maybe a Thumbs down as on TSFM site .
A complete mine field I know sir but I would like to think that if anything I said upset anyone whether I felt I was right or wrong, I would respect the wishes of my fellow guests and take it into another room, or even drop it for the harmony of the blog.
Pie in the sky La La land I know but hey ho one can only dream.
Have a great day sir.

Firstly, a word of praise.
I appreciate the effort and discipline of your post in distinguishing between Radical Islam and the majority of its adherents who have no wish to kill us. It is a discipline exercised by very few who share your side of the debate and is to be commended.
However, I wish your discipline had extended to the rest of your passionate defence of how you feel Israel has been wronged in the debate so far. It is not anti-semitic to criticise Israel, even to the point of comparing or equating their attitude with that of the Nazis. It may be offensive, crude and unhelpful, because it skirts the distinctions you note e.g. Israel has not officially called for the destruction of all Palestinians or Arabs. Mind you, I don’t think the Nazis ever committed their plans to paper either. There ARE prominent Israelis who do dehumanise their opponents and who do call for their destruction but, those on my side of the debate must exercise greater care to show that we are distinguishing too between Israelis, Zionists and Jews generally, as there are a plurality of views and attitudes to be found amongst each of these groupings.
But, in your anger, you committed one greater offence, when you jibed that your opponents would prefer that Israel turned off “their” shield so that casualties would be equal on both side. Did it not occur to you that most of us (the bloodthirsty Marxists that we are in Captain B’s Orwellian use of language) would prefer the simpler solution to make casualties equal? Namely, we should pay for a missile defence system for the Palestinians in the same way we paid for the defence system used by the Israelis.
European Jewry suffered centuries of abuse. They were treated in their time as Muslims are being treated today, with suspicion of being “The Other’ and with owing allegiance to somewhere other than the rulers of the countries where they were settled. The Jewish people needed a place of safety in which to rebuild lives after WW2. Many found relative safety in Europe and the Americas but many were equally committed to a return to their ancient homeland. The real ownership of land is open to dispute as Stone Age men did not draw up deeds so force has usually decided who owns what. We deal with the complex consequences of that today.
So, thanks again for trying to be careful in what you said. You can stand apart from the wilder elements on your side of the fence as you are not responsible for what they say. Please try and exercise the same discipline towards those you perceive as opponents as most of them want to lessen loss of life, even if they disagree with your position.

Instead of altering the whole concept of the blog and having different threads and chatrooms (I hate those types of blogs) why not simply scroll on by the posts that you don’t want to read or the posters whose views you dislike? I scroll by the horsey/betting stuff but others like it. It doesn’t take long.
When religious/political fanatics are in charge, massacres of innocent civilians happen. It’s not rocket science.
Those who do not share the fanatics’ ideology are firstly demonised, then dehumanised and then massacred. This has happened since the beginning of mankind.
In Israel at present, the extreme religious parties hold the balance of power in the Knesset and thus there is little to be gained by political leaders adopting a conciliatory tone.
Playing the blame game doesn’t stop the slaughter, but one could ask who benefits from continued war in the Middle East and elsewhere. The arms manufacturers and oil price speculators seem to do well out of these wars yet they are never held to account.
The cowardice of the Western leaders is disgraceful, sitting on their hands while 1000s of innocents are killed. Mind you, they don’t want to risk their future sinecures on the boards of these arms and oil companies.
I believe that the only power ordinary folk have is as consumers. A consumer boycott helped bring down the apartheid regime in South Africa. Such action may send a message to Israel that this slaughter must stop. I have my views on the whole Israel/Palestine issue but I can air them elsewhere. The current plight of the Gazan Palestinians is a humanitarian issue.

Hezbollah are far nicer people than Jews, so we’re told.

In 1904, Limerick’s Jewish community was devastated by an infamous pogrom that saw them largely driven from the city. The words that catalysed this pogrom come as no surprise to anyone: the Jews, said Father John Creagh (who kick-started the activity), are usurers, freemasons, Christ-killers.
But okay, that was 1904. Things have moved on, right? Certainly, modern Ireland is more accepting of homosexuals and has liberalised attitudes towards women.
It’s not quite the same story for one group though. That’s right, the Jews. The JC reports that in a new study by sociologist-priest Father Micheál l Mac Gréil, twenty-five percent of Irish people wouldn’t allow Israelis to become Irish citizens, and eleven percent of Irish men and women wouldn’t allow any Jew from taking up citizenship.
Forty percent of Irish people wouldn’t allow a Jew into their family.
All of this is of course shocking, but the most telling statistic is this: within the 18-25 age grouping, the percentage of people who couldn’t handle a Jew being in their family was higher at forty-six percent. These figures surely act as a damning indictment against the indoctrination of students by that unhealthy cocktail of Islamists, leftists and ‘liberals’. The Irish intelligentsia and liberalculturati are the same folks as the Islington social oligarchs who saw Arafat as the new Gandhi and Sharon as the new Hitler. Every corner of Irish culture is poisoned by this vile anti-Semitism.
It’s hardly even worth saying that young people are more anti-Israel. Anti-Israel activity on British campuses has already been well documented, but at least in the United Kingdom we have some sort of history of (at least marginal) support for Israel. In the past, however, as in the present, Ireland has been vehemently anti-Israel politically and culturally. Indeed, it is the only issue other than appetite for more accession of sovereignty to the EU that truly unites the vast majority of Irish politicians. Ireland, for example, was the last EU country to grant permission for an Israeli embassy – in 1993.
Where does all this hatred come from? Are my compatriots Nazi sympathisers? Has Ireland been taken over by a radical Islam that makes Ian Paisley look as harmless as Christine Bleakley? No, the truth is that anti-Semitism in Ireland has a long history.
In the old days, it came from (as it did across Europe) an extreme Catholicism. Latterly, anti-Semitism has found its provenance from Ireland’s consistently pro-Palestinian position. Ireland was of course for 800 years oppressed by the evil hand of British rule (that brought us roads, education, some form of civilisation), and the fight to ‘free’ her could take as many lives as possible.
As slaves to history, and in the great Irish tradition of storytelling, they (or I should say, we) look to the Middle East and localize that situation and apply the same logic. The Jews are just like the Brits, you see. Forget the actual Holocaust, they imply, the real Holocaust is actually carried out by the Israelis.
Fr Mac Gréil’s study is of course shocking. But is it really surprising? Judaeophobia is the hatred en vogue of the bien-pensants.
As Ireland ‘progresses’ socially, one is left wondering whether it really is the island of Chaim Herzog. It also makes one wonder whether we need a new definition of ‘progress’.

To all on CQN
Just in case any of you are ever convinced by the wilder accusations of TSD, I should state that, to my knowledge, I have never met BMCUW, inside or outside a cabal.
Apologies to Bobby if we have met but I just don’t remember the event.
Throwing out wild accusations and feeling that there is a clique conspiring against you maybe does hint at a tendency towards delusional thinking and a tendency to feel persecuted and conspired against. I cannot recommend that the trolling of CQN, however, is helpful, in any way, towards improving those symptoms.
Help should be sought elsewhere.

Rwe tell me how can fan expectation exceed the budget when the budget is supposedly zero?
Celtic are absolutely taking the support for mugs.
This site has managed our expectations for years.
There was no money after Seville
Expect a spend of £10m a year
All transfer money will be reinvested in the playing squad
We spend, every single penny we make on the club
Time after time it has been lies until we reach now. Now we are being told how skint we are and we need transfer money to keep the lights on.
Oh I remember being told that we budget for no European football. Now it’s we need CL football and transfer fees just to survive.
All nonsense.
We have been told the ghost stories about Leeds and now of course the Hun. All to cow us to accept our spiralling downsizing.
At the same time our silence on the Hun and letting ogilvie get reflected unappossed shows the complicitness of our board. Oh they hanker for the Hun.
At the same time allowing and contributing to celtic supporters being vilified and victimised. Allowing the media to run amok unchallenged. Allowing us to be criminalised in fact contributing to it.
Celtic are barely recognisable.
The support is cowed and simply a cash cow.
Our owner and our chairman deride the support when they deign to speak at all.

Agree, the last exiting six million pound man created a vacum at Celtic Park which can’t now be filled, and Celtic downsized into a difficult market, NFL’s remaining strikers prove it.
Their are no target men available, and Chelsea signing yesterday’s man is a sign of the times when one of the richest Sky clubs resort to a player of his age.
Billy Dodds is right and all we have are partners for target men, Balde will need to be loaned Fridjohnnson hasn’t really trapped, and Tony Watt can’t play point man.

“Now we are being told how skint we are and we need transfer money to keep the lights on.”
You were told that by Kojo only. I believe he was being deliberately provocative in his DR stylee. You should not take that comment seriously or see it as representative of Celtic thinking. It was designed to rile you and to provoke heat rather than light. Kojo loves the lazy journalism, so he does.
Ronny Deila is on record in saying he wants a winger, a striker and a left back. He may not get them all by the close of the current window but I’ll bet you he won’t miss out on all 3. Every season we go through the same posting routine pre-season (and yes I am aware that the season has started)
Mineshafters_ Celtic are not going to buy anyone just sell players
Followed by Celtic signing (and selling) players
This leads to:-
Mineshafter- We have not signed anyone good enough, we are gambling that this will do.
Followed by Celtic reaching group stages (and yes I know it was close, it always will be) and winning the league with a record clean sheet run.
Followed by :-
Mineshafter- We’ll not be as lucky next year if we try this.
And you know, one day, that mineshafter will be right.
