Strachan lessons as Milan looms

1655

Neil Lennon will begin to get his players back at Lennoxtown tomorrow after, what for most of the first team, has been a two week international break.  For many of the established players, he’ll be hoping for a clean bill of health, but with trips to Tynecastle and Milan ahead, the manager will be keen to spend time with Teemu Pukki.

Teemu played 92 minutes for Finland in Tbilisi last night so will get little time on the training fields before Celtic’s next two games.  Tynecastle itself may provide the most effective training opportunity ahead of Wednesday’s game at the San Siro.

Delighted for Gordon Strachan, who has already caused an unlikely upturn in Scotland’s fortunes.  He is a better coach and tactician than he ever got credit for.  His Key Performance Indicators (winning leagues, knock out stages of the Champions League) were achieved in spades, but there was a soft underbelly which always seemed to undermine progress.  Curiously, his Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in all competitions, despite winning the league in both seasons this run spanned.

The one game during this period of note was the 1-0 defeat to Milan in the Champions League knock out stage; the only game Celtic completed 90 minutes without conceding.  If Neil Lennon can replicate this achievement he stands an excellent chance of a second successive memorable Champions League campaign.

  9. For the gout sufferers.

Ask your doctor to prescribe colchicine. Discuss the side effects and be aware of them.

    Relief within 30 hours.

The 30 hours can be a wee bit dramatic but worth it ultimately.

Then get prescribed Allopurinol and become aware of the diet that causes the build up of uric acid, especially purines.

BTW colchicine is not recommended for prolonged use.

  10. Hail Hail bhoys and ghirls, this is my first post – lurked for ages but having grabbed a couple of the terrific CQN golf shirts from Pat and got the Champions League ringtone from ACGR today, it was time to take the plunge. Look forward to moonhowling with the best, or at least the rest.

Anyway here’s a wee story. There’s a kind of sub-masonic group of old trades associations here in Dundee, known collectively as the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee. They have a ceremonial chair that sits in St Andrews Church of Scotland church in the town. Recently that ceremonial chair had to be re-upholstered and it turned out that it hadn’t been re-upholstered since 1955. How did they know?

Because when the old material was stripped off, a note was found inside. Here’s what it said, I’ll write it as it was written:

    “20 – XII – 1955, Tuesday

The world To-day is in a terrible state, there is war threatening on all sides, if this is found you may well laugh but between Russia, Bulganin, Kruschov and Egypt’s Nasser, what a mix up. But I don’t give a damn as long as Celtic wins the Scottish Cup. To Hell with the lot of them.”

It’s signed Tony McGarrity (as far as I can make out), and there’s a phone number. Poor old Tony had to wait till 1965 for his wish to come true.

I don’t mind telling you I got thrills and chills reading it. If anybody knows of Tony McGarrity or his family please let me know and I’ll give them my copy of the note. The original was stitched back inside the newly-upholstered chair.

Just got more thrills and chills listening to ACGR’s ringtone. That was some night against Karagandy.

And in answer to the as-yet unasked question, no – I’m not from the dark side :-)

  11. SFTB @ 20;27,

    Hope all’s good!

  17. Did CQN not have the Great Gout Debate 3 or4 years ago.

But as I was not paying attention I dont know the ultimate cure.

Kind of remember that attacks seemed to be worse around Lent.

Think it was the sudden abstinence from alcohol.

How do we go about getting in touch? Email to Paul? Would love to share a jar (or three) with you.

BTW, I do some volunteer work at the NCTM in Spencer, NC.

  19. Is our team for Tynecastle, the same as the one for the San Siro? I would be tempted to play the same eleven for both, and not rest players on Saturday.
