Strachan lessons as Milan looms

1655

Neil Lennon will begin to get his players back at Lennoxtown tomorrow after, what for most of the first team, has been a two week international break.  For many of the established players, he’ll be hoping for a clean bill of health, but with trips to Tynecastle and Milan ahead, the manager will be keen to spend time with Teemu Pukki.

Teemu played 92 minutes for Finland in Tbilisi last night so will get little time on the training fields before Celtic’s next two games.  Tynecastle itself may provide the most effective training opportunity ahead of Wednesday’s game at the San Siro.

Delighted for Gordon Strachan, who has already caused an unlikely upturn in Scotland’s fortunes.  He is a better coach and tactician than he ever got credit for.  His Key Performance Indicators (winning leagues, knock out stages of the Champions League) were achieved in spades, but there was a soft underbelly which always seemed to undermine progress.  Curiously, his Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in all competitions, despite winning the league in both seasons this run spanned.

The one game during this period of note was the 1-0 defeat to Milan in the Champions League knock out stage; the only game Celtic completed 90 minutes without conceding.  If Neil Lennon can replicate this achievement he stands an excellent chance of a second successive memorable Champions League campaign.

Re last night abt Kenny not getting 50 caps in a row and equal G Y record. I was of the same opinion as you but I heard Keevins say on SSB that this was not the case. Cant recall the reason he gave. Must ask him the next time we have a pint together. Aye right!!!

I have not asked you or anyone to cease conversing with anyone.

It would not make the slightest bit of difference. He/they would just invent another acolyte to converse with and praise him. We have lost and are losing good posters and our reputation for decency with the stuff that shares space with us here. Kojo provides conversation and succour to our right wing troll from Planet Tin Foil, if indeed he is a different persona in real life. I would like us to win back those decent lost posters before this place becomes the online Fox News network

The CQN strapline says “not lazy journalism” but Kojo and posters of that ilk are peddling lazy simplistic notions and are full of tabloid thinking. They are determined that there will be more heat than light in any discussion and they are prepared to attack our manager and some selected players to achieve it.

There are occasions when criticism of the team and manager is apt and deserved but rarely does it come from that source. He over-stepped the mark early on when he described Neil as a corner boy and he continues from there. Neil has too much class and nous to deserve that tag but someone who yearns for a strong man to rule his world does deserve to be called a corner boy in the same mould as Ernst Rohm.

Exclamation An accountant provides an analysis of Rangers accounts

I print below extracts of a couple of emails a chartered accountant pal of mine sent me.

He had a look at the December management accounts that were published online, took note of the figures released through the Sun newspaper, took on board comments made at the fans meeting with the directors on 8th August, and the projections made in the Prospectus which accompanied the IPO.

You can download his analysis as a spreadsheet using this link – https://www.hightail.com/download/OG…Z1ArV3hwdmNUQw

    Key issues are:

Rangers Retail performance and dividend policy.

How much of this 2013/2014 season ticket money is included at June 2013

In simple terms if running costs are £2m per month (£24m per annum) and we have £10m cash at June 2013, we need another £14m receipts in the next 12 months. This looks highly unlikely unless we get some decent dividends from Rangers Retail or large sponsorship funding. I suspect we wont run out of cash until the turn of the year but really need to understand how and when cash is extracted from Rangers Retail.

Excluding Rangers retail the coffers will be empty in Q1 next year but there must be a mechanism for extracting cash from Rangers Retail ( probably dividends) but I have no info of the quantum and timing of this cash.

Sorry forgot to mention in first email that Rangers retail figures shown include 100% of their figures so we are only entitled to our share (50%) of the profits with the the rest going to Sports Direct (shown as minority interest in the P&L account)

    Begin forwarded message:

    Mark,

I attach a one page summary of the revenue and cost figures extracted from the management accounts.

This highlights how the boards own forecasts for improving results rely almost entirely on a massive improvement in Rangers Retail revenues (from less than £1m first half to £11m second half) and profits (from c £0.5m first half to c £7.0m second half).

Excluding Rangers Retail the board forecast an Operating Loss of £5.8m in the second half (c £1m per month) with running costs at £13.3m (£2.2m per month).

The cash forecast at June was £15.6m including an assumption of £6.8m of season ticket money for the new season.

As you know BS has said the actual balance was only £10m at June but it is highly unlikely anything like £6.8m was received before June so this would account for some of the shortfall.

We will need to wait to see the actual results but I would expect the Rangers Retail profit forecasts to be highly optimistic and the running costs to be underestimated given the fees and bonuses agreed since December. There may however be some additional sponsorship income which was not anticipated when these were prepared in January.

At least it gives us a much better insight into the the breakdown of revenues and costs.

    Yours,

  15. Tarrier

Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill” is an American folk song first published in 1888 and attributed to Thomas Casey (words) and much later Charles Connolly (music). The song is a work song, and makes references to the construction of the American railroads in the mid-19th century. The tarriers of the title refers to Irish workers, drilling holes in rock to blast out railroad tunnels. It may mean either to tarry as in delay, or to terrier dogs which dig their quarry out of the ground.[1]

Which is a good excuse to play the Dubliners were tarry is mentioned as in delay :)

I would not believe Hugh Keevins info on the day of the week

Kenny was dropped as he was about to equal George Young’s record of 34 consecutive appearances for Scotland. Everyone bar Hugh knows that was the reason. When Kenny was dropped, he had just started to play well for Scotland. Ormond could have justifiably dropped him at various stages in his first 25 caps when KD was not reproducing his Celtic form.

At the time, Ormond issued a cover story that Kenny needed a break. It was unconvincing then and it stinks as a belief now. I am not at all surprised to find an Uncle Tim like Hughie swallowing that story and repeating it.

BTW, it was not Willie Ormond’s decision. He was told to do it and he is guilty only of lacking a backbone.

What is wrong with the word “amount”, quantum for gawds sake

    quan·tum

    Noun

A discrete quantity of energy proportional in magnitude to the frequency of the radiation it represents.

An analogous discrete amount of any other physical quantity, such as momentum or electric charge.

    Synonyms – quantity – amount – number
