Strachan lessons as Milan looms

1655

Neil Lennon will begin to get his players back at Lennoxtown tomorrow after, what for most of the first team, has been a two week international break.  For many of the established players, he’ll be hoping for a clean bill of health, but with trips to Tynecastle and Milan ahead, the manager will be keen to spend time with Teemu Pukki.

Teemu played 92 minutes for Finland in Tbilisi last night so will get little time on the training fields before Celtic’s next two games.  Tynecastle itself may provide the most effective training opportunity ahead of Wednesday’s game at the San Siro.

Delighted for Gordon Strachan, who has already caused an unlikely upturn in Scotland’s fortunes.  He is a better coach and tactician than he ever got credit for.  His Key Performance Indicators (winning leagues, knock out stages of the Champions League) were achieved in spades, but there was a soft underbelly which always seemed to undermine progress.  Curiously, his Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in all competitions, despite winning the league in both seasons this run spanned.

The one game during this period of note was the 1-0 defeat to Milan in the Champions League knock out stage; the only game Celtic completed 90 minutes without conceding.  If Neil Lennon can replicate this achievement he stands an excellent chance of a second successive memorable Champions League campaign.

    I think history shows Ormond was acting under orders, especially in Jinky’s case.

    Was it not Jock Stein who said when he took the Scotland job, that the SFA handed him a teamsheet with Rangers players already included – or is this a Celtic myth?

    They were certainly involved in team picking as most of the Lions total lack of selection underlines.

    I think that one is a myth but Jock had to tell the SFA the same as he told Bob Kelly that he would brook no interference in team selection.

    Interestingly, the game we discussed last night, the away tie in Italy in 65 that we lost 3:0 saw Jock pick 4 Gers and only two Celts. However, in 1965, the Scottish public probably thought that did represent the balance of talent in the two teams. For the next decade there should have been a lot more Celtic than Rangers caps. However, even that imbalance was not always an anti-Celtic bias as Jock regularly pulled Celtic players out of the selected squads. Jock wanted Scotland to win but, in his mind, it was Celtic first, second & third and Scotland could get by on his cast offs.

    Is anyone familiar with Munich ?

    Familiar enough to recommend a venue for watching Celtic V The Zombie Cousins on Saturday

    Sorry I haven’t been on all day as I had a wee op done on my ear. Now there are a couple of places you’ll see the game if you ask them to show it. Too many of them are interested in the EPL and that includes thes two places but they will definitely show it. It might be on the smaller screen at the bar, saves you running back and forward. Both are owned by the same guy and easy to get to by public transport.

    You can get get the U-Bahn -U1, U2, U3 and U6 to Sendlinger Tor and go to Kennedy’s Bar in Sendlinger Tor Platz 11:

    I make no demands on the blog’s owner about revealing his views. Actions speak much louder than words and these posters are tolerated and unapologetic. I fear we will lose poster numbers and poster quality over time if this persists. There are times when I am shamed by what appears in Celtic’s name on here.

    Now, for the avoidance of doubt, I am not a pal of gerald766 and I am only guessing at who he is. My belief is that he knows a lot more about Neil than Kojo does and he is defending Neil’s character.

    You got caught in the crossfire today because you praised Kojo’s “insight”. To my mind, it was not a very insightful exchange at all. I felt there was a lot of attribution and post-hoc rationalisation going on. But, it was just a bad post,IMO, from you-nothing more sinister.

    I think you are as safe from the risk of any insertions as I am from visiting violence on TSD. Mind you, if he’s marching with his mates up the Gallowgate this weekend I won’t vouch for his safety.

    I think Ormond threw Jinky on for the last 5 mins against Yugoslavia but I may be wrong.

    I do remember the ITV World Cup panel in the studio slaughtering the Scotland manager.

    Bobby Charlton said that Jinky was Scotland’s best player so why was he warming the bench instead of playing in a crucial WC match that Scotland had to win.

    Charlton also questioned why Lennox wasnt even in the squad. He’d appeared as a guest for Celtic in the Ron Yeats testimonial a month before, which Celtic won 4-1. The England Great said Lennox read his game to perfection and was a joy to play with, not to mention his lightning pace.

    But not for wee Willie Ormond.

    He picked an over the hill talisman Denis Law and a guy who wouldnt have got near the Celtic bench, Donald Ford.

    These type of stories could fill a book bigger than War and Peace.

    Of Gramschi & The Nefarious Marxist ‘Frankfurt School’…

    ~~~~~~
    Saul Alinsky’s 12 Rules for Radicals
    Here is the complete list from Alinsky.
    * RULE 1: “Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have.” Power is derived from 2 main sources – money and people. “Have-Nots” must build power from flesh and blood. (These are two things of which there is a plentiful supply. Government and corporations always have a difficult time appealing to people, and usually do so almost exclusively with economic arguments.)
    * RULE 2: “Never go outside the expertise of your people.” It results in confusion, fear and retreat. Feeling secure adds to the backbone of anyone. (Organizations under attack wonder why radicals don’t address the “real” issues. This is why. They avoid things with which they have no knowledge.)
    * RULE 3: “Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.” Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty. (This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)
    * RULE 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.” If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. (This is a serious rule. The besieged entity’s very credibility and reputation is at stake, because if activists catch it lying or not living up to its commitments, they can continue to chip away at the damage.)
    * RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions. (Pretty crude, rude and mean, huh? They want to create anger and fear.)
    * RULE 6: “A good tactic is one your people enjoy.” They’ll keep doing it without urging and come back to do more. They’re doing their thing, and will even suggest better ones. (Radical activists, in this sense, are no different that any other human being. We all avoid “un-fun” activities, and but we revel at and enjoy the ones that work and bring results.)
    * RULE 7: “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.” Don’t become old news. (Even radical activists get bored. So to keep them excited and involved, organizers are constantly coming up with new tactics.)
    * RULE 8: “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.” Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. (Attack, attack, attack from all sides, never giving the reeling organization a chance to rest, regroup, recover and re-strategize.)
    * RULE 9: “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.” Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist. (Perception is reality. Large organizations always prepare a worst-case scenario, something that may be furthest from the activists’ minds. The upshot is that the organization will expend enormous time and energy, creating in its own collective mind the direst of conclusions. The possibilities can easily poison the mind and result in demoralization.)
    * RULE 10: “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.” Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog. (Unions used this tactic. Peaceful [albeit loud] demonstrations during the heyday of unions in the early to mid-20th Century incurred management’s wrath, often in the form of violence that eventually brought public sympathy to their side.)
    * RULE 11: “The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.” Never let the enemy score points because you’re caught without a solution to the problem. (Old saw: If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Activist organizations have an agenda, and their strategy is to hold a place at the table, to be given a forum to wield their power. So, they have to have a compromise solution.)
    * RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)
