Stuart Armstrong’s cautionary tale

193

On balance I am sure you would want Stuart Armstrong in the squad than not.  He has been a clear success since arriving from Dundee United three years ago, but injury did not do him any favour last season, as he was unable to win back his starting place when fit.

The appetite for either the club or player to sign another one-year extension to his contract, which is due to expire in 12 months, will be low.  Stuart will either sign a long-term deal on terms equivalent to those he currently earns, leave under freedom of contract next summer, or be sold in August.

West Brom were keen to take the player a year ago, but relegation may force them to reconsider (and may reduce their attractiveness to Stuart).  While that move would have earned Stuart a huge contract, the timing was not right for Celtic, who were reluctant to allow a then-first choice player to leave before a replacement could be found.

Celtic will be easier to deal with this summer, but whether Stuart’s agent can attract a comparable contract offer as a year ago remains to be seen.  What is clear is that Brendan Rodgers is looking to bring fresh talent into the squad, and someone will those already of the fringe of the team will not find it any easier to get game time next season.

The last time Stuart needs is a season on the bench as his contract runs down.  I hope he stays and signs a long-term deal, but getting a bumper fee for him, or allowing the rest of the squad to note a cautionary tale on what to do when Celtic offer you a contract, would not be the worst thing.

    Good shout agree and disagree

No question, the reason Celtic are successful is the ability to buy better quality from a better shop, whilst affording it legitimately within profit and loss.

Olivier Ntcham from Manchester City and Odsonne Edouard ( hopefully permanently ) came from clubs with better standards of player than random Bosman signings. Scott Brown was £4M back in the day and superb value for money.

Celtic must spend money on key areas and I believe under BR we’ll do that staying ahead legitimately in the transfer market is what has founded seven titles, and when we sell, we must buy the players nobody else in Scotland can afford and keep squad filling bargains to a minimum.

I doubt Sevco will mount a serious challenge Aberdeen are much more likely to get anywhere near us, they are built on more solid ground, and despite all the help Sevco are given, they’ll flounder on Bosmans and the desperation of their mentality that curses them since birth in 2012 .

  2. Not sure how all the pieces will fit together in the MF next season?

I would take JMcG in an instant.

SB had some great games last season unfortunately in others he phoned it in and we played with 10 men.

Will only happen more often next season.

However he has earned some flex and he is our captain so the situation needs to be handled with some subtlety.

ON looks like the guy to start in the middle 2.

CMcG has not looked up to it at times but he has filled the jersey.

EK is another who make the step up — either instead of JMcG or beside him.

NB might come into play if his rehabilitation comes good quickly.

    Regarding the front three.

TR is the man in the middle.

CMcG has brought some industry and some goals.

JF has a chance on the right — he has improved but he still has a long way to go.

Still a question mark for me.

MJ — has to be hos breakthrough season. He should be given the responsibility and tje game tome.

Then we have OE to crowbar in if we get hom.

Finally loans need to be looked at.

3 could be on the eay out for various reasons.

Need to re-stock this talent source.

    Use evey lever.

Not sure where all this leaves the U20’s / youths / reserves?

22 months on from the diddy cup on TV we have one possibly 2 in the mix.

    Not good enough.

We should not be training stiffs for other sPL teams.

  3. All that means SA — thanks and all the best.

Dont see where he would fit in.

Rear 2 — not b2b enough or good enough defensively.

Wide might offer a place but not sure he is worth his wages for 10 games a season.

  4. SA — another TC type player 40 years on.

Dont want to go over that ground again.

TC took a lot of stick he did not deserve.

  5. SA and the future: play 3 — 2 — 1?

    Instead of 2 — 3 — 1?

OE and TR would be the 2.

SA could try out for the SP role to stretch the game and use his running?

See,this is whatvannoys me about Celtic fans. You say,if Armstrong goes, then young Christie will take his place.Sorry,I have watched Christie in every Jun game,I watched him in the semis against Motherwell.I see nothing in this boy to think he will even get on our bench. He is another good player, not good enough for us.Not in the same league as Armstrong.Another Liam Henderson.Sorry if that upsets a few on here, but time will tell, who is right.

  7. To all the Billions followers, how good was that last episode.Chuck and Axe together.I can’t wait until next year.

We will have done the 8 by then.

    Stodge central games at CP.

    The odd defeat.

Open your mind as well as your eyes.

SB played well against the TFOD2.5 and a couple of others.

He was honking against quite a few teams.

I was surprised at the variability.

We need to plan for the season after next.

We should never become a one man team.

He is not where we need to go.

Not sure what ”phoned it in last year,on many occasions” means, but suspect its not a complement and not worthy of mention of our unique captain and the player of the year.

I didn’t see those games either CSC

First of all we lose Sammi and now we might lose Armstrong.

Well , I’m sorry , but to lose one fabulous hairstyle was careless but to lose two would be negligent!

And don’t get me started on Christie as a replacement! That curly mop of his is not in the same league as Armstrong’s bouffant!

They Irish Tims that travel every fortnight to Paradise in a 24 hour round trip are my favourite type of Celtic supporters. They treated us Scottish Tims like Kings in Belfast this weekend. Celtic brothers and sisters coming together in love is truly special, magical and mystical. I enjoyed my 3 days in Belfast.

    Cant go with that.

    SB is an effective player.

He is on occasion a good player.

He has been a great player

However he has never been at the same standard as GC.

  23. More 70’s perspective — he is a poor man’s DH.

  25. One thing the huns are good for is a laugh, I needed one today, mate has just been told he has cancer of his liver, tis a terrible thing the drink.

  26. While I think our captain has had a great season, he isn’t in George Connelly’s class. Probably not in Baxter’s either. I never had the privilege of seeing John Thompson play.

By the way, I would have loved to have seen Baxter in a Celtic jersey. He played football as it should be played. The very thought of him alongside Bobby Murdoch……with Jimmy Johnstone too.

  27. What is the Stars on

Scott Brown is our most important player.

    Nothing more

    Nothing less

First name on the sheet every game.

There is a reason why other teams fans hate him…..they hate him because he drives us..!!!!

  28. Goooood Evening CQN – ???????

I like Stuart Armstrong, and think he brings a different dimension to the team, when on form – a negative he does give the ball away often with poor passing, possession is critical in Europe

I would have signed John McGinn 3 years ago when he was leaving St Mirren, think we have lost out on 3 years development for the Bhoy, not sure he has developed as he should have, would still take a chance with him

I would also like to see Ryan Christie given a decent chance, talented Bhoy

Was reading Simon Donnelly recommending Ryan Gauld ??
