Stuart Armstrong’s cautionary tale

193

On balance I am sure you would want Stuart Armstrong in the squad than not.  He has been a clear success since arriving from Dundee United three years ago, but injury did not do him any favour last season, as he was unable to win back his starting place when fit.

The appetite for either the club or player to sign another one-year extension to his contract, which is due to expire in 12 months, will be low.  Stuart will either sign a long-term deal on terms equivalent to those he currently earns, leave under freedom of contract next summer, or be sold in August.

West Brom were keen to take the player a year ago, but relegation may force them to reconsider (and may reduce their attractiveness to Stuart).  While that move would have earned Stuart a huge contract, the timing was not right for Celtic, who were reluctant to allow a then-first choice player to leave before a replacement could be found.

Celtic will be easier to deal with this summer, but whether Stuart’s agent can attract a comparable contract offer as a year ago remains to be seen.  What is clear is that Brendan Rodgers is looking to bring fresh talent into the squad, and someone will those already of the fringe of the team will not find it any easier to get game time next season.

The last time Stuart needs is a season on the bench as his contract runs down.  I hope he stays and signs a long-term deal, but getting a bumper fee for him, or allowing the rest of the squad to note a cautionary tale on what to do when Celtic offer you a contract, would not be the worst thing.

Good luck in the second leg.

1.1 would have been nice , but will home advantage, hopefully you are able to overturn one goal deficit.

As Dallas said , Cumbernauld unhappy at final being a Thursday night, at such short notice.

They made a formal complaint about venue too, as sadly Shettlestons ground, in their opinion, is not up to hosting a final. Complaint was thrown out.

  6. McGlennan has resigned. It is obviously concerning his report on Rangers and the rest of the SFA views on his report.

Is this a man resigning as his findings that Rangers were as guilty as hell and the new broom in the SFA is fudging the issue and allowing Rangers to wriggle free OR

A man resigning because his report which fudged the issue is being ignored and the new broom wants to hammer Sevco for Rangers cheating.

Either way it’s not unexpected as we were warned that more SFA officials would be on the way out.

Maybe, after three years, the guy’s simply had enough of the SFA’s shit and fancies something different.

In all top football clubs you have a squad of around 25 first team competitors now in any walk of life no matter how well things are going not all 25 of the players will be happy with how things are going or how much they are being paid etc etc. There will allwas be at least 3 or 4 who are discontented with there situation and casting an eye elsewhere that is the nature of the squad so the manager has the impossible job of trying to keep them all happy. At the moment there are a few players casting an eye else where it is not only Armstrong. Now it is early in the transfer window and if im correct 3 players have already left the club and I would expect at least another 3 to join them. That is the nature of the game.Who and how many players we bring in is down to the manager but what he is paid to do is bring in better players than the ones he loses and if he does that the club make progress.Good luck to Armstrong and to anyone else who leaves this summer but not many players who leave Celtic better themselves so I am interested in who comes in much more than who moves out.H.H.

We know nothing really about what’s going on behind the scenes. If he goes, he goes; and with my best wishes. I’d prefer him to stay.

As pointed out above, it’s his choice between loadamoney or the glory that comes with being part of a mega successful Celtic team. I’d like to think I would choose the latter if given the choice.

It’s no biggie obviously, as big Peter more or less runs Scottish football single-handedly. Allegedly.

  14. Back home from the Huddle Down Under in Sydney. What a great weekend! Many thanks to the Sydney CSC Committee . Great meeting old friends again. Mrs WF’s wee win on the pokies was the icing on the cake.

Already looking forward to the Perth CSC 30th Anniversary Ball in November. HH.

  15. Morning all

McGlennan Compliance Officer has handed in his notice and is leaving the SFA , as reported in the Times. The hearing into the European Licence issued to Rangers will be heard in two weeks.

Clearly he will still be working his notice.

Is he clearing the decks in case of another smear campaign by King?

Does he have an idea of the possible result and want out?

Is this all part of the Petrie power struggle at the SFA?

In these days of transparency will we ever know??

What McGlennan and McKinlay and Regan’s resignations are telling me is that the Judicial Protocol system and Compliance arrangements that all clubs voted for are causing one club in particular massive problems.

If other clubs do not step up to the plate and defend the Judicial Protocol then the game is beyond saving.

    Perhaps McGlennan sees that coming?
