Supporting your ex, hurting the one you love, ballsy Ashley

892

I’ve plenty of sympathy for Niall McGinn for coming under pressure after being spotted at the Kilmarnock-Celtic game on Monday, but not in any way distressed.  Players watch former clubs all the time, it’s not even remotely an issue, but Niall is experiencing the cost of playing in a team at the top of the league.  Aberdeen fans would neither notice nor care where he was on Monday if they were in their usual mid-table spot.

A taste of internecine strife does more damage than any external party could ever hope to inflict.  Glad to hear it’s taken route at our nearest rivals.  On a similar note…….

A serious bid to bring newco Rangers to its knees got into full swing yesterday, as thousands of ‘fans’ signed up to spend not a penny more with the club, while mock-Rangers jerseys (should that be mock-mock-Rangers?), sold by fans’ groups, were profiled in the media.

If you know your history, 20 years ago a group of Celtic fans, some working on the frontline, some working behind the scenes, orchestrated the Celts for Change campaign, which ultimately brought regime change at Celtic.

Celts for Change had two fundamental factors in their favour: people with access to the money required to resolve the club’s problems were among them, while those running Celtic did not have access to significant funds, personal or otherwise.

The lessons of Celts for Change is that before you hurt the club you love: make sure you are capable of laying a glove on those you are trying to damage, and when you bring things to a head, ensure you have the money to put things right.  In newco’s case this will be many tens of millions.

I backed Celts for Change and I wholeheartedly back those who are trying to bring down newco.  Their plans and foresight are exceptional.

Care to guess which Scottish club has been most active in the transfer market this month?  Falkirk, who have signed their fifth player.  They have won six of their last seven games and are now within a win of getting into a play-off spot.  Hot tip for the play-offs: Falkirk, Hibs, Queen of the South and Ross County.

What about Mike Ashley yesterday appointing Duff & Phelps as administrators to one of his companies?  Just in case you think he’s not ballsy.

  3. If Blackburn need to sell, would we take Jordan Rhodes this time? Seems to be out of the Scotland set up but scoring for his club.

  4. 67Heaven. I believe it’s not the correct decision. Evans has done his time for the crime. Prison is to rehabilitate people ready for them to rejoin society. Contrast his treatment in the MSM / Joe public with that of a royal alleged to have “raped” a minor or the lack of vigour to bring high ranking Tories to justice for sex/killings of children.

anyone think there might just be a trigger clause in Virgil’s contract which has already agreed the price to open discussions?……….by any chance?………

If not, I am currently available to be his new agent……..

Evans may have served time for the crime but he has yet to show any contrition for it.

I think he has been badly advised since his release and is now in a position where he is unlikely to ever play professional football.

The Royal has not been charged of any crime as yet.

    Geordie Munro-

You make a good point about the remaining length of Hooper`s contract being a factor in pushing his transfer fee down. I had forgotten about that.

To be fair to the board they showed some resolve in turning down a bid for Hooper in January 2013. That was the transfer window where Commons and Ledley joked on Twitter that they had locked Hooper in a spare room to stop him from leaving the club.

The board in my view did the right thing in keeping him at the club at that point (even although he wanted away) as his goals were needed for the 2nd part of the season. But they probably took a hit of £500,000 to £1million on his transfer fee because his contract had run down that bit more by the time summer came along.

The thing is at that time the board could afford to take that hit as were in the last 16 of the CL. We`re in different times and in a different situation now and I`m not sure the board could/would take the same approach with bids for big VVD in this window.

We`ll see how it works out. The F5 key will no doubt be getting smashed in on transfer deadline day……

    ———–

To back that up, here’s a quote from an article from a few months ago, on the worst owners in the NBA:

Phoenix Suns: It’s tough to find an owner as loathed by his team’s fans as Robert Sarver. The 53-year-old Tucson native made his money running and selling a series of community banks, writing more than $1 billion in loans to Arizona businesses and homeowners during and after the financial crisis. He bought the Suns in 2004, and since then has presided over a steady exodus of talent—both on and off the court. Phoenix fans, who argue that he’s insanely cheap, are hyperbolic about his tenure, arguing that he’s run the team into the ground for his own profit. ESPN’s Bill Simmons once said Sarver “destroyed basketball” in Phoenix.

    http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2014/10/nba-basketball-owners-cartesian-coordinate-plane

And to expand on the ESPN analysts comment:

Look, there’s no need to debate or rehash Sarver’s rocky history with Suns fans. It’s part of our landscape. Few sports figures in the Valley elicit such negative feelings.

The national portrait can be even more unflattering. Recently, ESPN’s Bill Simmons attacked Sarver on a variety of points. He said Sarver is the owner that Commissioner David Stern would love most to depose. Simmons said Phoenix is “a valuable market with great fans — the current owner has destroyed basketball there.”

He also claimed the Suns could sell for over $600 million, taking great offense that an ownership group could run a franchise into the ground and walk with a $200 million profit.

That’s heavy stuff considering the source: a high-profile voice covering the league for ESPN, which is in business with the NBA.

Evans went to a hotel at 5 in the morning. He persuaded the night porter to give him a key for his pal’s room where he knew his pal was engaged in sex with a woman. He entered the room whilst the couple were in the throes. His other 2 pals went to the window of the hotel room and started filming events on their phones. His pal stopped having intercourse with the woman and Evans took over.

For all of this he had no remorse, shame or apology of any kind having left prison on license. He opened a website line maintaining his ‘innocence’ and seeking support and approval.

You think he was ‘rehabilitated?……… Really?

Evans and McDonald both maintain that the girl consented to the activity.

A jury was satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that she didn’t, or couldn’t, consent.

I have misgivings about how they were able to reach that decision on the basis of the evidence.

Received a very pleasant surprise last night ……. I went through life under the distinct impression my twin sister had no interest in CELTIC whatsoever ….. She has also lived in England since circa 1980, so any latent interest would surely have receded…..

Well ….. last night I phoned her and ended up assisting her to set up her new ‘tablet’ etc ….. At one stage I asked her to insert her usual PASSWORD ……. without ‘batting an eye-lid’ she states …..xxxxxx(my name)7xxxxx(her name)1 …….. she asked me why I was laughing heartily……”.once a Tim, always a Tim, darling” ….
