Tactical experimentation ahead of Romania

709

With Celtic a goal up midway through the second half yesterday, we tried something new.  The back four became a back three, with three sitting in front of them.  Adam Matthews pushed into right midfield leaving Izaguirre, Denayer and van Dijk across the back.  To the left of Matthews was Scott Brown and Charlie Mulgrew.  It was a useful game to experiment tactically as Inverness asked questions throughout.

The most striking feature of this three at the back with three sitters was that Matthews didn’t bomb forward when Celtic were in possession, as he usually does.  He kept in line with Brown and Mulgrew.  On occasion, they were 25 yards behind their nearest team-mate, which was a bit jarring to see, as it’s so rare.

This was almost certainly a dry-run for Astra on Thursday.  Getting it right defensively in Romania is going to be key to the outcome.  On their showing at Celtic Park, Astra are a decent passing team who enjoy being on the ball.  They were less impressive in attack, as the Celtic defence and Craig Gordon did enjoy to stifle them, apart from one slip, and when we asked questions of their keeper and defence, they looked vulnerable.

I’m not sure Ronny Deila will be overly convinced that his experiments yesterday should be repeated on Thursday.  Inverness carved us open several times late in the game, but at least we’ll hopefully not be trying something out there for the first time.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here. I’d a great chat with Billy today, he’s a man who knows how to enjoy his football.

Not sure if this has been discussed on here but surely Dundee Utd and Aberdeen are now the Old Firm and Celtic and The Rangers must surely become the New Firm

So for all journos looking in

Carefully edited highlights, very little first half and a concentration on the last 10 minutes. I wonder why?

    ____

Thought the same, what about our near misses just shaving the post in the first half, maybe they weren’t worthy of the highlights! Or…

Owen it must surely be worthwhile in order to get a more balanced and truthful narrative on the Deady Bears for PL to continue and insist that they are dead and it is a different club now playing out of Ibrox

  5. 2 things from Scotsport tonight, let’s see what the SFA do

Its a Celtic game first foremost and overall so having only missed 1 Celtic match at Hampden since 1982 more likely than not I’ll be there.

One of the most annoying things is the “Celtic fans” that only turn up for 2 or 4 games a season. Seen it for years. Even family members will think they have the right to ask for a ticket for this circus.

Anyway far more important game on Thursday.

    Oops too soon.

Some Celtic supporters will choose to attend the game against the new team and some will not.

Does it make one side better Celtic supporters than the other side?

    Of course not.

Sadly, there will be many, many Tims desperate for a ticket because they’ll see it as a Celtic v Rangers game in the traditional sense. We of course know it’s not, we’ll be playing this team for the first time.

However, the new mob are followed by the same scum who followed the old mob. The last thing I want is a Celtic team facing a support as vile as theirs without backing.

I genuinely feel sick at the thought of meeting them but will take my place at Hampden to support Celtic.

    ——-

    That’s 100% how I feel mhate.

We get the notion of a boycott.

The rest of the world would just see it as a huff or we’d sh&t it.

And most of our current squad never played the FOD in their previous incarnation.

Guidetti et al wondering why it’s so important to beat thems for us but no bu££er turned up to support him.

I hope that new club becomes another ex club before January. But if a Celtic team have to face the Hunnish hordes on the pitch and off it then they deserve to have a Faithful Fenian Army at their back.

That said I understand and respect completely those who advocate a boycott.

But I just see a battle looming. And I’d want to be there for my team and those Bhoys wearing the Hoops in honour of what I hold so dear.

Said he: As long as it`t no a Teddy Bears one. made me smile.

correctly pointed out our leaders can only see the cash. But over and above that, there are dozens of supporters who want the game. Many don’t know what, how and why the Deadclub cheated. Let alone follow the airbrushing and facts of the matter.

I completely disagree with anyone advocating a boycott, however, I completely understand anyone deciding not to personally attend for whatever reason.

I’ve seen some posters saying that, given the opportunity, they’ll purchase their ticket but leave their seat empty.

I would implore anyone of such a mind to reconsider and either not take the ticket or offer it to someone else.

Anyway, it’s months off and we’ve far more important games on the horizon.

You are probably/possibly correct. Is the big problem not, though, that we simply do not know enough to make statements about what our Club should or should not do re Sevco?

Likewise, we do not have enough information to know why OUR Club does not choose to inform us why they make the decisions they do.

Not as easy as some seem to think.
