Tactical experimentation ahead of Romania

709

With Celtic a goal up midway through the second half yesterday, we tried something new.  The back four became a back three, with three sitting in front of them.  Adam Matthews pushed into right midfield leaving Izaguirre, Denayer and van Dijk across the back.  To the left of Matthews was Scott Brown and Charlie Mulgrew.  It was a useful game to experiment tactically as Inverness asked questions throughout.

The most striking feature of this three at the back with three sitters was that Matthews didn’t bomb forward when Celtic were in possession, as he usually does.  He kept in line with Brown and Mulgrew.  On occasion, they were 25 yards behind their nearest team-mate, which was a bit jarring to see, as it’s so rare.

This was almost certainly a dry-run for Astra on Thursday.  Getting it right defensively in Romania is going to be key to the outcome.  On their showing at Celtic Park, Astra are a decent passing team who enjoy being on the ball.  They were less impressive in attack, as the Celtic defence and Craig Gordon did enjoy to stifle them, apart from one slip, and when we asked questions of their keeper and defence, they looked vulnerable.

I’m not sure Ronny Deila will be overly convinced that his experiments yesterday should be repeated on Thursday.  Inverness carved us open several times late in the game, but at least we’ll hopefully not be trying something out there for the first time.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here. I’d a great chat with Billy today, he’s a man who knows how to enjoy his football.

You ken him that lived in Oz for years and didn’t go to the games but is the bestest CFC fan in the world

  3. Wakaso’s performance yesterday, particularly his partnership with Lustig, looked promising. Still not convinced he’s a winger, more a midfielder, but his workrate will suit the high tempo, pressing style the manager favours. Haven’t been impressed with his previous performances but that’s understandable with him getting up to match fitness and settling in to a new environment. And Lustig’s return is also bound to benefit him.

Wiining Captains, there was a bit on the BBC Scottish football gossip page last Wednesday or Thursday saying the fans needed to raise £800 grand to keep the chanve of a fan owned club to succeed. Maybe just a coincidence

  5. I’m pleased to see that neither of the two articles about the LC draw on celticfc.net refer to an “OF match”. Good start. Now keep it up.

BTW I heard two sevcovians talking on train the other day. One mentioned to the other that the Ibrox scoreboard no longer displays the rangers crest. Instead it has the RFC badge (as displayed on their shirts). Same applies to the match programme and all other merchandising. I wonder if charlie green has walked off with the image rights for that too!

Billybhoy, there was a photo on here a few weeks showing the scoreboard from three years ago and the different hun crest used now.

Any time I see the five stars adopted by the tribute act I associate it with one of the most awful groups of all time called Five Star to an awful kid on football club.

  11. PFayr’s dig at Tom wasn’t funny. Questioning his Celtic credentials coz he choose to emigrate for a period defies sanity.

  13. The only man I have respect for in our game is T Hutton a man with morals who said it like it was Scottish Football is corrupt & not 1 board member of any club supported him & to top it off we are the victims in this yet our board said nothing.

I remember the days when posters on here told me ah don’t worry Celtic are waiting on the appropriate time to comment, still waiting.

So guess what our board failed us & shafted us for the bigot pound & that IMO will never be forgiven.

    1. LNS was a stitch up.

    2. Rules bent to help 1 club when rules applied to other clubs.

    3. SFA allowing the cheats to investigate themselves laughable.

    4. SFA waiting on clarification from old RFC board members still waiting.

    5. Farry delayed registration of Cadette.

    6. Peat = corrupt

    7. Regan = A man that promised so much failed our game.

    8. Doncaster = corrupt = Armageddon my ar*e

    9. Dallas = Disgrace but it’ll not be long because his son is in the mix honest mistake after honest mistake coming to a game near you soon.

    10. Smith = laughs at child abuse.

The list is endless & our game will never change its disgusting & I for one haven’t missed this fixture, innocent lives lost because of this game its disgusting.

So enjoy paying into a corrupt set up & this is why our game will never change because they know fans will find it hard to turn their backs on the game but please the next time you feel like a moan when the old honest mistakes re-appear & the governing body that bend the rules apply them to our club or any other club just remember we had the chance to change it & our club and every other club failed themselves and us.

Jude, You’re welcome. It will have been a worry for your family before he got the all clear.

That’s good news about Josh. Getting a game under his belt will have helped him. It’s good he wasn’t rushed back too soon.

I’ve never met you or had the opportunity to converse with you.

I was happy that you made the decision to move back to Scotland as it would give you the opportunity to see Celtic on a regular basis, to do so in the company of your bhoys must be a special expierence and one that you cherish.

I have had the opportunity to meet a few CQNers over the last 2 years and while not everyone of them would be on my Xmas card list, their Celtic credentials are second to none.

Lionsroar is a guy that I instantly took to after meeting him for the first time in McCools at BMCUWP;s hootenanny, he has a wicked sense of humour that could get you into bother if you happened to be under the influence and took him seriously.

I also wont be at the semi finale, probably for similar reasons to others on here. I’ll stay at home and ask my brothers to watch the game with me, afterwards I’ll make sure they get taxis home and will phone them to make sure they are home safe.

Unfortunately some young guys wont take such care and will leave pubs under the influence inebriated by taking copius amounts of alcohol and unfortunately will come across Loyalist mods or gangs and will never make it home to their loving families. This is the reality of being a Celtic fan when we face teams supported by these facists, young men die, families greive and nothing changes. The MSM and politicians tell us both sides are as bad as each other, guys like me and Lionsroar no the truth, that’s why on the day we face the tribute act we will make other arrangements and make sure we are at home before it gets dark.

  16. Boycott the semi final.

If the club don’t have the balls to stand up to the rubbish then the fans should take the lead ( as usual) and not buy a single ticket, not phone in any radio programs, not listen to any radio programs and not buy a single rag for 3 months.

  17. Doc,

Just off the phone to my wee mate, like yourself I’m in a quandary regarding the game against newco.

I’ve just been offered hospitality for it, I know VP, do I go and support my team or sit on the fence?

Feck it, bada, what is our opinion on it?

  18. I take your point Pf and yes Tom can come out with a few unreasonable hard man posts from time to time but you’re hardly a shrinking violet yourself. As far as I’m concerned its Turk meets Turk.

  21. Summary of last four games all at home…

Astra won 1-0 – however played poorly

Killie won 2-0 – poor until red card 40 mins

Partick won 6-0 – average at best until red card

ICT won 1-0 – average at best, ICT worth a point on balance of play / chances created

4 wins and clean sheets, however still massive improvement required. Hopefully we are starting to kick on now rather than a false dawn. I think we will know after the next two games.

  22. Sipsini, it’s not so much the game, it’s the corruption that has been allowed to pass.

They were liquidated, but they are being allowed to sweep it under the carpet.

They really believe they were relegated.

  25. Having been a huge critic of RD , I am glad he is starting to get some results.

I still have significant concerns about our ability to hold onto a lead, vis a vis yesterday and the Astra game.

In both cases we never looked in danger, but when you concede possession as easily as we do, a simple mistake can be very costly, and in both games the results shouldn’t have been as close.

On a different note , having watched Wakaso a few times, I think he is a player, but I would keep him down the left, as he constantly has to check back when down the right. The result of this is defenders get themselves back into position and get their backs to goal.

Assuming all are fit, on Thursday I would go with

    Gordon

    Lustig, VVD, Denayer, Izzy

    Broony , Charlie

    Adamski, Johansen, Wakaso,

    Scepovic

Line up as a 4231 when we have the ball , and 4411, when we don’t
