Tactical experimentation ahead of Romania

709

With Celtic a goal up midway through the second half yesterday, we tried something new.  The back four became a back three, with three sitting in front of them.  Adam Matthews pushed into right midfield leaving Izaguirre, Denayer and van Dijk across the back.  To the left of Matthews was Scott Brown and Charlie Mulgrew.  It was a useful game to experiment tactically as Inverness asked questions throughout.

The most striking feature of this three at the back with three sitters was that Matthews didn’t bomb forward when Celtic were in possession, as he usually does.  He kept in line with Brown and Mulgrew.  On occasion, they were 25 yards behind their nearest team-mate, which was a bit jarring to see, as it’s so rare.

This was almost certainly a dry-run for Astra on Thursday.  Getting it right defensively in Romania is going to be key to the outcome.  On their showing at Celtic Park, Astra are a decent passing team who enjoy being on the ball.  They were less impressive in attack, as the Celtic defence and Craig Gordon did enjoy to stifle them, apart from one slip, and when we asked questions of their keeper and defence, they looked vulnerable.

I’m not sure Ronny Deila will be overly convinced that his experiments yesterday should be repeated on Thursday.  Inverness carved us open several times late in the game, but at least we’ll hopefully not be trying something out there for the first time.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here. I’d a great chat with Billy today, he’s a man who knows how to enjoy his football.

And so it comes to this.

I always thought that Celtic fans would suffer most for Rangers’ malfeasance.

Their fans have sopped on the vinegar of a wrongly sentenced penalty – they have, perhaps stoically, ignored their state as nothing but transitory – a result of unseen hands. A delay, a pause on their return to that, perceived, entitled position.

All I can ask is that we don’t fall out with each other over them. Or we try to.

Respect each other’s decision in regards to their return.

  3. lennybhoy,

Our midfield is our weaklink and I fear Astra realise this after our first match.

I hope RD will not play with two in midfield and using others as assists, we need to control it or atleast be able to compete…three in midfield.

Ronny can’t play youngsters as one bad result ensures that he is transformed into a useless Norwegian turnip. We all then howl for Old Firm Jackie and Irn Bru.

Teemu Pukki scored for Bronby again today. He scored their winning goal in the eighty eight minute in a one nil win.

The Brondby coach compares him to Danish player, Jon Dahl Tomasson, who could play as a centre forward or number ten.

There gas certainly been criticism of the Polide/BBC stance and relationship over the Cliff Richard story.

There are many subtle, and not so subtle, ways that the forces of the crown can bring pressure to bear on an as yet uncharged and untried person and adverse publicity is one.

I wonder how many people remember the trial of Jeremy Thorpe the former Liberal Party leader who was accused of attempting to murder his gay lover Norman Scott?

I was pretty young at the time but was appalled at the fact that the then very po faced BBC News would mention that Thorpe was gay at every opportunity as that was the salacious element to the trial and of course someone admitting to being a homosexual was very unusual in those days.

Worse still was that during the trial, The man who had always been “Mr Thorpe” or “Jeffrey Thorpe” suddenly became just plain “Thorpe” which was pronounced in a very desultory and accusing fashion.

However, as soon as the man was acquitted, he was back to being ” Mr Thorpe” which was now pronounced in a much softer and sympathetic fashion.

I always remembered that and thought that the BBC were a right shower of hypocritical illegitimates for such a clear cut policy and tone.

Agreed with your other post not this one.

Celtic should have told it as it was. They should have told the truth. If that had have happened we would not be having the debate that we are currently having between Celtic supporters.

Their demise and the last two years of comedy have been despite Celtics interventions not because of them. Saw it quoted on the blog today and it is so apt, “all that it takes for the triumph of evil is for good men (and whummin) to do nothing. Let us hope that evil does not triumph as a consequence of our club standing on the sidelines.

    Ps

I will not fall out with any Tim over this or any other matter concerning the Tic. It is forums like this that make our club and it’s supporters what it is.

We need to look no further than Resolution 12 with regards to how the board regard Sevco. Past and Present. What some regard as a dignified silence I regard it as the best policy to adopt to make the most money.

There will be no attempt to address the issue as that would entail cleaning up the game. Celtic plc have accepted that they can only truly expect to have an increased political presence within the Scottish and world game married to Rangers.

This up and coming semi final will be MARKETED as the derby. Old Firm will not be mentioned until the summer. After season book sales.

A smooth marketable return for Sevco back into the SPL and Europe. TV deal will be renegotiated. That is why it is not surprising to hear SFA employees close to Celtic also suggesting an immediate return.

A possible final, promotion to the SPL, better TV deal. A recent cash injection from Singapore. Sevco will survive and WWF Scottish football will crave their fairytale revival. Walter Smith referreeing will help those investments.

Celtic Board getting everything it wants. Maximum money. F@@$ the past and any notion of integrity it interferes with the future income. There is nothing special about us in the boardroom.

How could I not go along and support my team?

What the MSM and authorities do I can’t affect.

But I can support the team.

Given I have taken a while to get to that decision, I understand and respect those who feel they can’t attend.
