Tactical experimentation ahead of Romania

709

With Celtic a goal up midway through the second half yesterday, we tried something new.  The back four became a back three, with three sitting in front of them.  Adam Matthews pushed into right midfield leaving Izaguirre, Denayer and van Dijk across the back.  To the left of Matthews was Scott Brown and Charlie Mulgrew.  It was a useful game to experiment tactically as Inverness asked questions throughout.

The most striking feature of this three at the back with three sitters was that Matthews didn’t bomb forward when Celtic were in possession, as he usually does.  He kept in line with Brown and Mulgrew.  On occasion, they were 25 yards behind their nearest team-mate, which was a bit jarring to see, as it’s so rare.

This was almost certainly a dry-run for Astra on Thursday.  Getting it right defensively in Romania is going to be key to the outcome.  On their showing at Celtic Park, Astra are a decent passing team who enjoy being on the ball.  They were less impressive in attack, as the Celtic defence and Craig Gordon did enjoy to stifle them, apart from one slip, and when we asked questions of their keeper and defence, they looked vulnerable.

I’m not sure Ronny Deila will be overly convinced that his experiments yesterday should be repeated on Thursday.  Inverness carved us open several times late in the game, but at least we’ll hopefully not be trying something out there for the first time.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here. I’d a great chat with Billy today, he’s a man who knows how to enjoy his football.

  1. Strachan saying R@@@@@@ were punished ..really ..i missed that…and zombies hearts hibs must be back in the top league…WHY!…

  2. Oops too soon.

Some Celtic supporters will choose to attend the game against the new team and some will not.

Does it make one side better Celtic supporters than the other side?

    Of course not.

Sadly, there will be many, many Tims desperate for a ticket because they’ll see it as a Celtic v Rangers game in the traditional sense. We of course know it’s not, we’ll be playing this team for the first time.

However, the new mob are followed by the same scum who followed the old mob. The last thing I want is a Celtic team facing a support as vile as theirs without backing.

I genuinely feel sick at the thought of meeting them but will take my place at Hampden to support Celtic.

Clashcitybhoy, your team set up for us will work if the players know their jobs & do them.

Ronny, I still have concerns about him, was asked to get four victories from our four home games and we got them. If we keep on winning here and get good results in Europe it will do his and our cause no harm.

That list could be added to substantially to include Res 12 and the failure to criticise dos/ebt schemes which impacted upon our club greatly. Indeed right up to the present with the Tonev farce and the Boyd case dismissal and don’t get me started on the treatment of our previous manager by the smsm and Sfa (Goodwin being a case in point).

I’m normally a glass half full kind of guy but Celtics inaction over their continuing cheating/deception and their failure to declare the fact that the dead team were lliquidated as a result of their failure to pay their creditors really takes me to the fair.

For me this isn’t about going to watch us take on a new team in a cup semi. It’s an opportunity to nail a lie that they are the same team and our failure to confront this to date has lead to the creation of an alternative narrative/parallel Universe in which they were not liquidated.

They did but in fairness the equaliser was late in injury time and our game had no injury time so probably finished before the Accies game

  9. Paul67,

I listened to the radio in the car on the way home as well but they seemed preoccupied with some cup draw or other – never spoke about much else

So there was. It was wednesday that there was no injury time! Senior moment!

  13. Thinking about the Sevco game.

I was thinking what is the best outcome for us…The support.

We all have been tarnished with the same rubbish…. .Celtic fans are just as bad as the deidCo fans blah blah…singing a rebel song is just as bad as the famine song…

..you hate protestants …you hate Scotland…

I think this is a chance to make it clear to others that we are different LOUD AND CLEAR.

For this one time only we don’t turn up except the green brigade or some other group with the skill and leave a banner proclaiming our beliefs.

    They are dead

    they were cheats

    they were bigots

when a club playing out of Ibrox admits to these past sins or says we are not the 1872 club then we will welcome themto paradise as rivals

I think such a statement would put a line under this OF rubbish once and for all.

Then our support can once again be united knowing we did the right thing and then every time we meet these cheats in the future we can patronise them and treat them with the contempt they deserve

Then we as a support can move on.

We made our poinpointed it will always be there.

  14. Never wanted us to meet the new team but it’s happened so we get over it. We beat them they hate it we laugh. Rangers are still going to be dead in Jan/Feb no matter what the hacks might say.

Some are calling for a statement from Celtic but I seem to remember Peter Lawwell being castigated for expressing the opinion that they could call themselves anything they wanted it did not make them the same team. He.was accused of being patronising, smarmy even undignified in his actions. Damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.

  15. Carefully edited highlights, very little first half and a concentration on the last 10 minutes. I wonder why?

  16. Was playing football with an Aberdeen fan tonight who suggested a couple of banners for our forthcoming League Cup tie.
