Tax analysis along Christine Grahame rules

360

I really don’t care if journalists stick a microphone in Dermot Desmond’s face and ask him questions about tax, Dermot is big and bad enough to look after himself, the letter he issued to BBC’s Mark Daly confirms as much. What troubles me is the inordinate double standards employed by the Scottish media.

Graeme Souness and Walter Smith were recipients of an aggressive tax avoidance scheme, funded by Rangers before their liquidation, while employed as managers of clubs in England. Why are they not subjected to the microphone treatment when they walk into football stadiums, as they do every week?

Unlike anything Dermot has been asked about (no one disputes the legality of Dermot’s arrangement), the Rangers scheme was found in court to be in contravention of tax law.

Why Souness and Smith were in receipt of money from Rangers, while they were employed elsewhere, is a question studiously avoided by their many friends in the media. It is not just these two. More than 50 Rangers players received payments through the same mechanism, all struck down in court. Not a week goes by without some of these former players or managers making media appearances, several sit down with the very people who deemed want to talk about Dermot Desmond this week. None are called to account for their struck-down tax arrangements in the way Dermot was for his (legal) arrangements.

I feel we are in the territory of SNP’s Christine Grahame here. Celtic do nothing wrong so change the frame of reference to allow you to tangentially include Celtic. Then screaming “Celtic” and “tax” all over the front page for an issue that involves one of our shareholders, but has nothing to do with the club.  It is sloppy, but unlike Ms Grahame’s intervention, no innocents will be locked up this time.

  1. In the chat after the meeting at Firhill – http://www.scottishfsa.org – I said it would be fascinating to see hoe the PR boys deal with the survey and that a key point would be that the respondents were mainly Celtic fans. From memory from the presentation, Celtic fans accounted for 46% or 48%, the 2nd biggest group ( but maybe less than 10%) were Aberdeen fans and then, just below, were our Ibrox friends. So the majority of the 16,000+ respondents were not Celtic fans.

SFA were rated as less respected than FIFA. Regan at the SFA earned “strongly unimpressive” by Celtic, Rangers and general fans. The impressive and objective German professionals who designed the survey have agreed to open up the back data to challenge those who predictably will seek to trivialise the survey.

  2. Delaneys,

no surprise if they put it down as a Celtic supporter thing,

absolutely no desire for their cosy wee set up to be challenged

Broadfoot also said that he asked 2 scottish ‘experts’ to look at the survey and they said it looked like it was designed to get a pre determined result.

  4. It’s late and Jeez I need my beauty sleep but please look at the survey and get an insight on how much agreement there is out there across the spectrum for our game to modernise and break down the cabals and handshakes – http://www.scottishfsa.org – it is a rich and fascinating report. The first independent, objective survey of fans’ opinions in Scotland ever. But it will only be significant if we get behind it.

They revealed on Radio Scotland tonight that 40% of poll were Celtic supporters. The biggest group by far. It is now a Celtic thing.

Dallas, Dallas – thoughts are with you and your family.

My dad passed away when I was in my twenties – around 25 years ago, now.

The pain was acute in the first couple of days, then subsided during the whole funeral and aftermath. Came back with a bang after a couple of weeks, then – over a period of months and years – the sadness subsided to be replaced with ‘normal’ memories – some happy, some sad, some prosaic.

The thing is – all of this seems like last week.

My mum passed away two years ago – seems like yesterday.

I seem to be going through the same process with my mum – Margie – as I did with my dad, and I expect most people do.

Every time I hear of a CQN poster who has lost a family member – most recent being yourself and, very sadly, Weet Weet Weet – I do think about my own parents’ passing, and what a fellow Celtic fan must be feeling now, and what they will go through over the next few weeks and months.

All I can say is that the immediate pain subsides – the loss never goes away, but you can get on with your life and remember – in my case my mum and dad – without feeling too sad.

    God bless, and Hail Hail

Yes Gary, just like the SFA wheeled out an anonymous “legal expert” to state that there was “no appetite” for change” re the wayour game is run. Persistent corruption and mismanagement.

40 percent Celtic fans means that the Majority 60% are not Celtic fans so I guess their votes count the most. Do the ‘authorities” not think like that.

Had a listen to yesterday’s BBC Sportsound podcast this morning as it concerned the Scottish football survey that was completed recently.

As expected, the show was set up to look balanced but in reality was an attempt to pick at the credibility of the survey with an ex SFA employee and now sub contracted PR rep given the job of disrupting any semblance of reason or common sense.

In this respect I think he failed as the results speak for themselves no matter what slant you try and put on them.

As an aside, I think my favourite part of the show was another guest, let’s call him ‘wiggy’, bemoaning the fact that he could get anything done while employed at the top of the organisation as the place was full of people not qualified to be in the positions they held.

Wiggy also said that as CEO he thought that if he suggested an idea he expected them to implement it. He couldn’t believe they didn’t and passed to committees instead.

That’s how inept he was for the job in the first place
