Teenage kicks

946

So how do you feel about playing a couple of teenagers, Filip Twardzik and debutant Jackson Irvine, in central midfield, but dropping a couple of SPL points?  Good, I hope.  Welcome to the world of player development.

For a decade or more Celtic produced prodigious youth teams but watched as Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts even Hamilton Accies graduated more effective adult players.  Key to this is perhaps ensuring that players are tested at a higher level at key times in their development.  In short, if you have not played regular first team football by the time you are 22 there is a good chance you will not fulfil your potential.

There is cost to this development, you’re not going to win all the time, especially when the two teenage central midfielders are surrounded by other young players: Adam Matthews, 20, Tony Watt, 18 and James Forrest, 21.  Half time substitute, Victor Wanyama, is still only 21.

I’m looking forward to seeing more teenage kicks in the coming months.

If we are team who are choc full of untested and untried youngsters then the fans should be charged accordingly.

You also mentioned thousands of unsold season tickets, I don’t know if you mean 2,000 unsold season tickets or 20,000 unsold season tickets. If we look back, less than 10 years ago we had 60,000 fans at every game, nowadays it’s probably nearer to 40,000. I reckon a 30% drop in gate money income?

The economy will be a contributing factor to that slump but…….

The spend what you earn policy makes sense, however like most sound bites, it only tells a small part of the story and doesn’t deal with falling incomes.

The transfer window has been and gone and i don’t think we would have sold many season tickets on the back of our deadline day signings.

Admittedly I don’t know any of them at all so they may all turn out be some players and magnificent bargains, but they probably just look to most like the same type of hit and miss policy we have used for the last 10 years, whereby

For every good signing we have bad signings,

For every player we sell on at a profit, we release another at a loss

For every player we resign on a new contract, we have another we can’t get rid of

Our income, in real terms, has been in decline for almost a decade. We congratulate ourselves because we didn’t overspend. If our income remains in decline for the next decade we may continue to congratulate ourselves that we didn’t overspend, but eventually we won’t have any income to overspend at all, unless we halt or reverse falling incomes.

We are now at the point where we need significant European income, so that we aren’t forced to sell our best two players every season.

So how to increase the income, so that “spending what we earn” is meaningful, I don’t have the answer to this but at least we should recognise the problem.

    Yes it’s possible.

But, having seen Neil on the telly late on Friday

he looked like a man who’d just missed the last train home. imo.

Mere speculation Mate and even then we are not sure Neil wanted him, the outcry for Jordan Rhodes to sign was swiftly replaced with Johnny Russell..

New TV show…Bling of the Weeeeeeek!!

We signed a striker from La Liga which if it works out could be a very shrewd piece of business and Dundee Utd should keep their best players and build their club up again into a Euro force.

One thing for sure in five years to come there will be a section of the support like the Fletcherites who will be saying “we shoulda signed Johnny Russell!!!” True dat…

Had we signed Messi there would have been those who said “we shoulda signed him five years ago”

Also dbbia your family in our prayers today god bless mate

  11. No Tims Allowed ,Certainly at the B B C Scotland.McLEAN, DODDS, SHIELS, CRAIGEN,D FERGUSON,ALL HUNS ,and there is plenty more ,but cant remember them all. i didnt here any booing on saturday,we should have killed hibs off in the first half, but i suppose thats what happens now and again, but i would have liked to see kris commons on from the start.

  12. Fat Sally hoping he has no injuries or suspensions before January 2014…

“I said before I’d have been happier with four or five in but we got one or two in and one out.

“The maths would tell you I am not particularly happy but we know now where we are and what we’ve got.

“We are a little thin on the ground in defensive areas so we will have to carry a bit of luck in terms of injuries and suspensions.”

  13. 50 shades of green on

    not sure of time .

League cup mate with all teams that played in Europe now entering .

  14. Off the cuff calculation and judging by Chucky’s barely concealed smirk, shifty look, new regulation brown brogue haircut, and the wee obligatory shoogle of the shoulders, I would reckon he’s got circa £3,000,000 salted away in some untraceable account for himself by now from the deluded unmentionables, the wily old rip-off artist.

And if ‘newco’ really are ‘oldco’, as they keep insisting they are then right here, right now they owe in the region of £40,000,000…..and that’s without the so-called ‘big tax case’. So, the creditors should be mounting a class action suit to claw some readies from CG and gang before Sevco goes down the drain as is looking more and more likely.

    Roll on BDO and Hector.

It is becoming more obvious by the day that the media strategy is to ‘talk up’ sevco, and to ‘talk down’ all things Celtic, to an even greater extent than in the past…….. Even if it means downright lies …. But that’s OK, we’ve resisted this aspect of playing football within a bigoted football establishment for over 100 years, and we’ll continue to do so ………do they not understand, however, that it was this strategy which resulted in the bhun demise in the first place ….!!!!

Fholks, there you go again prematurely judging our signings……in Neil we trust….he has done not too badly in the transfer market so far (within the necessary financial constraints)

  16. HT

Dundee is certainly up there in the ol fertility stakes it would appear – must be the peys.

Kev is a good turn though.I have met a few Tims like Kev over the years. One guy I worked with in the early 70’s thought Jinky was a dud. Another guy I knew thought Dalglish was slow and overated . More recently a mate of mine would rsge about why we didnt sign Moravcic 10 years before we did

You cant help but love them.

  17. Jim Traynor, eh?

    What a wag!

A well-known, and avowed, supporter of Airdrie United FC – one of Scotland’s so-called diddy teams – whose chairman also happens to be the President of the SFL.

Jim Traynor, man and journalist of the utmost integity, who does not have an agenda against a particular club from the east end of Glasgow or leanings and sympathies for a new club currently trying to pass itself off as an entity which won hundreds of trophies over the course of more than a century.

A man who is a colleague of the creme de la creme of Scottish sports journalism – literary giants of the printed media like Hugh Keevins, Graham Waddell, Keith Jackson, Mark Guidi and others. He is also a frequent contributor to the broadcast media where he rubs shoulders with heavyweights in that field – Chick Young, Jim Delahun(t) and several ex-players from a now, sadly, defunct club.

We are indeed fortunate to have a giant heavyweight like Jim Traynor – a man always prepared to tell it like it is.

Keep telling it ‘like it is’ Jim. You know it makes sense – and some ‘peepul’ actually believe it!

    HH!!

re Budapest, it isn’t a Celtic pub, but there is a central basement bar called Champs Sports pub. It shows loads of football NFL etc etc, and I caught a Glasgow derby in there no problem.. (The kevin thomson dive game).

    http://www.champs.hu/

It is easy to find and very central.

I am expat and relying on CelticTV for the game. At the final whistle was a clear mixture of cheers and boos.

Just watched it again a second tiome to be sure and yup, definate booing.
