Teenage kicks

946

So how do you feel about playing a couple of teenagers, Filip Twardzik and debutant Jackson Irvine, in central midfield, but dropping a couple of SPL points?  Good, I hope.  Welcome to the world of player development.

For a decade or more Celtic produced prodigious youth teams but watched as Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts even Hamilton Accies graduated more effective adult players.  Key to this is perhaps ensuring that players are tested at a higher level at key times in their development.  In short, if you have not played regular first team football by the time you are 22 there is a good chance you will not fulfil your potential.

There is cost to this development, you’re not going to win all the time, especially when the two teenage central midfielders are surrounded by other young players: Adam Matthews, 20, Tony Watt, 18 and James Forrest, 21.  Half time substitute, Victor Wanyama, is still only 21.

I’m looking forward to seeing more teenage kicks in the coming months.

    Bacharach and David .

    Memory [ very unreliable !] says —–

They fell out big time in the early 70s over Publishing Rights . David sued Bacharach who then sued David . Both cases rumbled on for years . Both spent a fortune on lawyers. Both cases were settled out of court . Bacharach paid David – David paid Bacharach . Bacharach paid a lot more to David than David paid to Bacharach .

Whole thing was further complicated by Dionne Warwick suing the both of them . Her record company sued her for breach of contract when she failed to complete an album on time . She blamed Bacharach and David for failing to give her the necessary songs[ as they were contracted to do ]. Bacharach blamed David -David blamed Bacharach . Case rumbled on for years . Case was eventually settled out of court. ——.

Everybody eventually made up but things were never the same –

  3. I don’t listen to Clyde but i know how they work and they will make sure someone comes on and mentions that article in the Scottish Sun to make people think that the MSM are the best source of info.

Phil was set up but he only has himself to blame for that.

Chris Graham is on twitter calling him mad Phil, brilliant imagine that deluded fool trying to call anyone mad.

Graham tried to discredit Alex Thomson a couple of weeks ago regarding the ex Rangers director Adam Kelly and now he’s trying to do the same to Phil.

Your memory is not at all unreliable. Almost word for word what Johnny Walker said on Radio 2 Sounds of the 70’s yesterday…..unless, of course, his memory is unreliable too@

  5. I disagree with you Paul, at this stage of the league we should have been putting out our best available team; points are most important and God has yet to write into the Gospels that Celtic would be crowned ‘Champions’ in May 2013.

There is a lot of damage yet that can be done to us by both our opponents and their assistants – the MIB. Remember it was not the hun that put us so many points behind last season. Also we have our September and November coming again.

The cups are the place to blood the youngsters. The cups are now no more than glory’s lipstick. I am not a glory-hunter but if we’re to win this league, I’d rather do it front end, by mid-February and then there will be ample time to give the boys a game without the malevolent and ubiquitous risks causing us all undue distress.

Winning the league/s before the hun gets back is most important to our future well-being. Why gamble at this stage of the competition, after all, it’s not like any of us, regardless of how romantic we can be and I include myself in that category, really believe we will win the big cup this year.

Agree with you and the manager. But for a howler from Forster, and a very poor day for Adam Matthews, I thought the rest of the team performed very well. Wanyama’s absence was keenly felt in the 2nd half (I can’t remember a touch of an real significance from young Irvine). All in all, a very good performance marred by costly lapses in concentration.

re. Adam Matthews. His form has dipped considerably, and I think Lustig has improved a lot in the last couple of games – I’d be all for bringing in the latter for the Benfica match.

I think Phil knew EXACTLY what he was doing……he knew the Sun couldn’t afford to alienate their ‘loyal’ supporters …….. what better way to get the story out there………even a few bhuns will now read Phil’s book and get the truth …… Whether they listen or not is another matter …..

  9. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    Morning,all.

Glad to see The Sun standing up for integrity and refusing to serialise Phil’s book.

Of course, throwing in a slanderous little barb never does any harm-no doubt they’re expecting an Edinburgh jury in any court case, and Phil will know this.

In the next few days,I expect them to reveal that Jack-the-Ripper was a pioneering social worker and demanding a posthumous knighthood for his efforts in keeping prostitutes off the streets.

Tough he might already have had higher honours than a knighthood………

  10. Just looked back to find out what The Sun story is all about.

It’s pretty obviously a result of an internet campaign from huns and Sevconians, and the newspaper has responded by immediately changing trousers.

The Sun will have known exactly what they were buying when they agreed to serialise Phil’s book. His website is not some obscure tract of cyberspace, they will have been following it for many months as he played a leading role in exposing the biggest story in Scottish football. To claim that they only discovered it now is risible.

However, Phil isn’t a saint or martyr and his blog (and his book, “A Rebel Journalist”, which I bought) does contain some contentious political stuff not directly related to football. It’s not so much that he has given anybody a stick to beat him with, more that he has given them a figleaf behind which they hope to preserve what remains of their modesty.

As for the “army of loyal readers” dogwhistle – get used to a lot more of that if Salmond breaks up the UK. (thumbsup)

You think I should be reassured about a failing cognitive function because a foppish prat from Kilmarnock who ponces around with a cane whilst wearing a top hat and riding boots agrees with me ?

  12. I think its great that the youth get a chance to play, but a whole bench full of them (excepting commons and zaluska) and two (not counting Vic and Matthews who are established 1st teamers) starting?

The bench was very very weak.

Plus Big Vic was getting a tough time of it in first half, lots of heavy tackles against him I reckon.

Remove Vic from the game and we ended up with a central midfield two which consisted of Twardzic and a hairdo! No ballwinners!

Add Paddy and Forrest to the flanks and all of a sudden the MF seems very weak.

in the first half Hibs were having serious issues trying to play past our midfield, the second half was the complete opposite.

One look at Celtic’s teamsheet and its quite obvious to target Vic for a bit of roughness, especially if you know that the refs will be allowing the favorites to be beat up… Well played Pat Fenlon imo.

I am a big fan of blooding the youth, but not 7 at a time!

Really great to take a point with such a lineup though, all things considered I am pretty pleased with the result!

  13. I’m still adamant they stitched him up lads sorry.

Everyone knows Phil was getting stuff out there and bringing them down and who better to get at.

They stitched Phil up and they’re trying to discredit Alex Thomson because Alex has shown the MSM and the SFA up in this country.

Look at this tweet and this tells you how they all work.

    Kucka .

Kucka played from the start . He was substituted @ 20 mins into the second half . He scored.. I thought he played well.

  20. I do wish people would use the evidence of their own eyes rather than just repeat parrot fashion whatever the current view is.

Was there a single person who saw the full 90 minutes on Saturday who truly believes that Hibs were our equals? We were streets ahead of them in all but chances converted. Dropping points was all to do with missed chances and they were not all missed by the “youngsters”.

Seems to me that we missed Victor in the second half and that evened the game up (but we still had many more chances than Hibs). That, however, is now being translated into we dropped points because the manager didn`t want to risk injured players. I can offer evidence in terms of shots on goal etc to support my view. All that can be offered from the other side is that Irvine didn`t contribute very much….and even that is just opinion.

I should have said Johnnie Walker (wrong label)

  22. I don’t agree with everything Phil writes but the usual bully-boy tactics have done the job that was desired – they have suppressed a voice they don’t like. How ironic that he was one of the few who told them what was going to happen to their club. If his name had been Donald Findlay maybe they’d have listened but then again George Adam told them in 2002 and they didn’t want to know.

    Stupidity that knows no bounds.

  23. Apologies I have not read everything that has been said here so might be out of kilter – but I dont agree entirely with the sentiments of the blog. Blooding youngsters is not a process that can be as cavalier – not at CP. It has to be done carefully at the right time and the right environment. The Celtic support (around me anyway) for all their good were right on top of the players’ backs straight away on Saturday and I dont think in general the fans are up for this (alot of booing at end too). We have the opportunity to bring on a crop of youngsters which is terrific – but stick them all in at the same time and watch confidence destroyed.

So the huns have had a wee cathartic campaign in order to be able to look themselves in the mirror again after sitting back and watching their club and its history die, what a result eh?

Probably have to create new topics for discussion such as poppy ,songs, religious or grammar debates.
