The beating of Barca, II. This time it’s Tony.

1064

Where do we start discussing last night?  Perhaps the end of the night.  There was joy in abundance, not only inside Celtic Park, but in the streets surrounding the game and in a hundred thousand homes across the world.  This joy manifest itself into a great sense of community.  That performance brought tears, hugs, spontaneous jumping up and down, and not only from Celtic fans.  Messages have poured in from fans of other SPL clubs and beyond.

This is what great sport can do for people.

Brother Walfrid has excellent timing.  He managed to arrange our kick-off meeting to coincide with match day four of the Champions League group stage.  Those of us who attended the anniversary celebrations on Tuesday were reminded what Celtic is all about, the best team in the world were in Glasgow waiting to play, the fairy tale script was written, but could it be delivered?

It’s the details which are most impressive.  Mikael Lustig looked like he could play in any team in any league.  He was comfortable and composed throughout.  Adam Matthews, deputising for an injured former Player of the Year, played out of position flawlessly.  I watched him struggle at left back on his Celtic Park debut in a friendly against Wolves last year; it defies explanation how far he has progressed.

Please forget about Victor’s goal, it will only detract from his incredible midfield performance.  His composure, skill and assertiveness troubled Iniesta and Messi all game.  This was all the more impressive given the absence of captain, Scott Brown.

Georgios Samaras was crucial for most of the evening.  He was the one player Barca seemed afraid of, although a lack of training caught up with him before he was subbed.

I’ll not burden Tony Watt publicly with the comparison I made of him earlier in the season but he possesses an impressive array of attributes: upper body strength, pace-with-the-ball and a nose for goal.  I’m tempted to say he will continue to improve but, to what level?  Without injuries to Hooper, Lassad and Forrest it’s unlikely he would have enjoyed as much time last night.  Sometimes Fortune Favours the Celtic.

All of Europe would have been impressed with Fraser Forster last night, dubbed La Grand Muralla, the Big Wall, by a Spanish newspaper.  He will play for England, so too with Kelvin Wilson if he maintains this season’s form.

The only man with a problem today is Neil Lennon.  Tactically the two games against Barcelona have been as accomplished as any I have witnessed.  Neil needs to know how to follow that in Lisbon. I’ve no idea.

Happy Birthday Celtic!

I’ll bet the communists were upset alright. What was the chant again in 1968 Czechoslovakia – ‘Dubcek/Svoboda’?

It would be comically insane , if he wasnt serious. How does he justify

moving a fourth tier outfit straight into the top league

  3. Anyone know were I could get a DVD of the match.

I would love to see it again.

Best night had at paradise for a long time and I am sure Lenny’s lions will deliver many more. 

    maley’s….,

messi said barca were glad Celtic never played Paddy

  5. Charlie Mulgrew and Kris Commons basically played as central midfielders, and only moved towards Jordi Alba and Dani Alves when they received possession, which meant an awful lot of lateral running. Both full-backs were always available for a pass, and both crossed the ball regularly

This quote is from the zonal marking site, lateral movement? I thought that was banned?

    sipsini,

quite a few 1st division clubs have made it quite clear they dont need the spl, they are living within their means and improving, they dont depend on spl clubs for income they will survive and probably prosper.

After what has been the most joyous event in recent Celtic history, there have been some great posts on this site that have been both moving & uplifting.

My own favourite was your wee vignette about the kindness that yourself & your boy received from the Rangers supporting proprietor of the Sportsman’s Bar.

That sort of act of kindness is what makes our Dear Green Place so unique,

It is a great wee morality tale.

    Thanks for sharing it.

Remember a couple of days ago, the new year game at the bigot dome, half a team out, and what did we do.

Now I must admit, never in my wildest dreams, going with half a team against the best on the planet, did I think we would actually beat them, but it’s Celtic, and Celtic do what Celtic do.

  12. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    TET,

yep, we’ve had many great results with makeshift teams, in fact in many cases I believe we might have been beat had we had the first choice team on the park on most of those occasions.

Ita also good to be right, innit :o)

    best guessers in town :oD))

  13. Doc

    sipsini is right.

The first time I was in Lpool, I came across a protest that had been going on for about 7 years, a bloke was living on a roof that was part of a Catholic Church, I can’t remember what it was about, there were Everton scarfs and Everton things everywhere.

I remember talking to the priest, he was from Kerry, never ever forgot it, he talked about his love for football, and then he went up to give yer man a hot meal.

Did I say they were Everton supporters ?

  14. THE EXILED TIM

Celtic are capable of Everything and anything and we have continuously beaten every odds.

Last night was monumental but listen to Neil, he says there is a lot more to come from these Bhoys. I believe him 100%.

Can anyone tell me why the Celtic game is on Sunday 3:00 PM? If my Sons game kicked off earlier we could have made it but it is 1:00 PM so there is no chance to go now and give that fine group of Celtic players and management the round of applause they thoroughly deserve after last night. I am sure there are many of our finest supporters, who travel great lengths, that will also not be able to go because it is Sunday.

Has there been an explanation for this?

  15. Watched the match in the pub last night.

Someone posted about revenue from adverts etc.

it made me realise that i was so engrosed in the game, i necer even noticed the adverts that surround the pitchside.

  16. Maestro – someone posted earlier saying, sarcastically, that PL will bring a video out for Christmas.

I hope he does and gives copies to our scouts. What young prospect would NOT want to be part of that?

  17. necer=never soz, as the younguns say.

A big shout for the gb, what a display at the start.

Also all you guy’s at the game you all did the club great, thank you.

    hail hail.

  18. Not long back home and reading back on the blog…….I will never give a monkey’s what the likes of slobbergob jabba or jandy sardine ever ever ever say about us.

Last night checkmates those gobmonsters forever.

They will feel internally screwed up every time they hear the name of Celtic F.C. and/or anyone associated with us.

Last night the world sat up, took notice, and gave us maximum praise. That is all now a matter of historical fact and legend; it cannot be undone, it cannot be wished away.

We have added another shining layer to our legendary history.

We are Celtic F.C. and the entire world knows it and respects it.

How amazing is that? How lucky are we to be alive today?

    Very..and…very.

    HH!

  19. Neil canalamar.

Every club wants to progess, prob being some overstretched their finances and some just cheated.

Bed for me,still can’t get the smirk of my face since the Valentines day present.hh

  20. canamalar

I’m hoping it is not that and some other reason.

If it is the case then that needs to be addressed by the Celtic hierarchy.

The zombies are at bigotdome v Peterhead on saturday. The SPL game arranged before they were allowed into SFL has been moved to accommodate. Cant have both on Saturday.

    I kid you not!

Strange things happen at Celtic Park, so it has been said.

I wonder what the chances are on the current Provincial of the Marist Brothers being a direct descendant of one of those families for whom we were founded. For indeed he is. We share a granny, who was born in 1890 odd into the Philips family in Williamson Street, a mere stone’s throw from Celtic Park, his Mum (my Auntie Anne, God rest her) was born and raised at the corner of Springfield Road and London Road, in the flat below Jimmy McGrory’s sister’s family. It’s an even shorter stone’s throw away. Brendan himself was born and spent his very early years in Grier Street, just off Crail Street, two or three stone throws away. God does work in mysterious ways.

    —————————————-

and thats why we all feel part of the samething, the special thing, brendans voyage still keeps us .

    thanks for sharing

Who are these peepil making these decisions? ;)

Time to remove all the cheats from office as this can’t go on.

  24. petec

With a bit of luck, guys like Victor will stay for a while, but I won’t be holding my breath, but the way our scouts are doing presently, we will have his replacement already lined up, for a fraction of what we will get for him.

It’s looking good for the foreseable.

Nights like last night are what it’s all about.

But come sunday, if we don’t blow St J off the park, the hun mentality will be back on the blog with a vengance, wanting Lenny oot, cos he got it all wrong, slagging the players for not puting enough in, they know who they are.

Amazing they have been quite the last couple of days, I wonder why ???
