The chairman, the chief exec and Elvis

300

It is a measure of the impact someone has made that even after they have moved on, superstitions about them endure.  For some, there’s an almost religious believe that a huge figure cannot be diminished by retirement, loss of status or even death (there’s a special 1970s category for Elvis and Bruce Lee).

Prepare yourself: Peter Lawwell is not Elvis Presley.  He can’t sing like Elvis, he seldom dresses like him and under no circumstances should you confuse the supernatural powers attributed to ‘The King’ in the late 70s to our former chief executive.

Peter retired on appointing Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2021, when Dominic McKay started his summer placement in charge.  By September, Michael Nicholson, previously company secretary and in-house lawyer, was temporarily then permanently given the top job.

18 months after he left, Lawwell agreed to replace Ian Bankier as chairman.  As Celtic’s representative, Peter was on the board of the European Club Association (currently vice chair) and was working with Uefa on the new Financial Sustainability Regulations.  It suited the club and our interests that Peter take the role, allowing him to extend Celtic’s influence at Uefa.

Back when Elvis’ died, football club chairmen carried executive roles.  They often opened the doors in the morning, did the accounts, sorted the banking and were always responsible for player contracts and budgeting.  The role has changed.  Lots.

In a modern PLC, a chairman is a non-executive, “unconnected with the day-to-day management of a business and which is instead concerned with effective management of the board”.  That means they are unconnected to player contracts, signing strategies or – and I cannot be clearer on this one – managerial appointments.

Such matters are reserved for the executive team and any major shareholders they are answerable to.  At Celtic, this is Michael Nicholson and Dermot Desmond.

Peter Lawwell was a huge influence in Scottish football and a significant figure in Europe.  Without him at the helm in 2012, Newco Rangers would have been voted into the SPL, debt free and ready to go again.  Back then I got some credit for starting a campaign on this issue, but take my word for it, all credit was due to Peter.  He fought and won the most intense battle Scottish football has ever seen, and like Keyser Soze, he left everyone searching in the shadows.

We scarcely got to see Dom McKay and Michael Nicholson has had two and a half years of low-profile management, a benefit of inheriting a club on the up.  As a consequence, when people think ‘Celtic board’ they assume Elvis lives.  In every meaningful way, Elvis has left the building.  He doesn’t sing the songs or choose the band.  If you think otherwise, you’re howling at the (blue) moon, and ironically, applying absolutely no pressure to the wound.

    Excellent presser

Brendan seeming more comfortable these days despite the perceived turmoil – good to see.

Gushing again about Adam Idah, he could make a difference in this season’s run in.

It will be another interesting team selection, hopefully a winning team that can become a settled team.

Wi the huns winning everything wi a pulse this year, according to MSM,. It would be sweet if wee Kyogo and the ‘Big Yin’ teach them all a lesson.

  3. Brendan’s presser – his mattress is clearly dry.

Let’s see if that assuredness can translate to the team.

  4. FOURSTONECOPPI @ 7:10 PM,

Yes, Kyogo hitting top form and real goal scoring partnership will sort out the paper tiger.

Indeed it looks like an ‘obvious’ scouting error re big Gus , but to be honest I’m not so sure this stuff is as black and white, as the fans who’d prefer the current Head of Recruitment leave the premises. It would be good to think that our recruitment process would involve ‘eyes on’ at games and canvass opinion from trusted local contacts to get a rounded view of Big Gus.

For me big Carlos leaving has been a blow , a good big defender , good in the air with a fair turn of pace. Taking that cog out of the defence has proven very very difficult to replace and for me has disrupted the balance of our play.

Peter Lawwell or the 60,000 controlled opposition?

Turnbull Hutton would be spinning in his grave if he read that guff.

*Wrong TH only stopped them from going intae the Championship

  9. Best TV Western: Alias Smith & Jones, my favourite TV show in the early 70s. Wasn’t the same after Pete Duel died!

  10. Comedy of errors gift huns first goal. We missed 4 easier ones than this in the first half against them.

  11. Missed out on one of the great Westerns

One of the things I don’t understand. Lagerbielke was voted defender of the year in the Swedish league last year. We buy him, hardly play him then end up trying to flog him 6 months later. A Serie A club, Lecce is the interested club. So GL was great in Sweden and is deemed as potentially good enough for the Italian league – but he’s not good enough to face SPFL dross? And Liam Scales is good enough? In what universe? Come on.

It looks to me like Brendan Rodgers isn’t actually interested in developing young talent.

    —–

I listened to ACSOM podcast and the presenter said he was with big Mjallby at a supporters do who stated he was not Celtic class.

And to others who have mentioned his pace, surely this is one of the most basic data metrics you get. If Brendan is so hung up on stats this would surely have been flagged (unless of course he isn’t so slow after all).

    —-

Another this Mjallby said was that after all the scouting was done him and/or Lennon would go and watch the player in the flesh 3 times.

  13. SIONNAIGH- if Warnock got the Sevco gig, before Pedro etc,he would have turned them around in about 6 weeks, outstanding record in the Championship, a far better league than the SPFL

Still peddling the same old uninformed pish I see.

If it had not been for Phil and the 4 Requisitioners there would be nothing to notice.

In spite of what emerged from those efforts folk queued up, and still do, to pay their £49.

    ………….

Still glib as fcuk I see?

What has Res12 got to do with you and Phil Mac NOT mentioning once IN SEVEN YEARS that a Celtic hierarchy led by DD and PL, etc, put old Rangers £49 ticket price onto new club Sevco tickets to give off the impression that the old firm game was still a thing?

Not once in SEVEN YEARS since Sevco got promoted in 2016 has either Phil Mac or Auldheid mentioned to their so called fellow fans that the PLC have pulled a fast one and gone along with the same club lie through their compliance with old firm ticket prices from 2012 ie £49.

The fixed ticketing compliance would be far easier to explain to fans than the other guff that you push ie getting rules changed in `any` rule book which `NOBODY` will ever apply to the huns…duh!

The old firm ticket switcheroo was carried out in 2016 and covered up by the Brendan1 media circus how convenient eh?

The ticket `fraud` has been covered up since 2016 by every Celtic mouthpiece on the internet.

    Why would that be then?

    ================

You do realise that the ticket fraud and tie in to Rangers is but a meaning in your head?

A joining of dots with no evidence to back them up to prove Celtic’s motivation. You can make the accusation but you cannot prove it. That is a reason why no mention by myself and I assume Phil as it would have undermined our credibility.

Easy stuff to repeat and repeat in an attempt to make it true.

Not like putting in the hard work to understand the rules, check evidence provided and then put that evidence to folk in a meaningful way to let them decide if there was a case to answer .

Even today the impact of Celtic’s treatment of Res12 is a reason why PL is mistrusted , something that has to be addressed properly and truthfully and I’ll come back to that later on this blog.

I recall you at one time signing the praises of the CST attempts at change, do you still think they have done anything to further your £49 ticket cause? You can become more informed if you read this article by Phil from 2022

    https://philmacgiollabhain.ie/2022/01/04/an-opportunity-for-michael-nicholson-to-have-a-fresh-start/

which was an attempt to steer Celtic on a different path in the absence of PL.

You do know that they sabotaged Res12 in run up to 2021 AGM?

I also recall offering to meet with you away back at The Knights of St Columba meeting in Blantyre a few years ago but you declined.

So forgive me if I treat your £49 ticket campaign as one with no substance from someone I hold in same regard.

    I offered to meet y

Maybe Auldheid and Phil Mac `glibly` assumed that all Tims were dumb and so far up themselves that nobody would ever notice anyway?

Do you think Rangers fans would have bought £49 tickets to help go along with the lie that Celtic didny die if the roles were reversed?

I`ll catch any reply later – oot.

  16. Khun will start is it to soon Maeda with them in the side were able to create and finish and feed Kyogo 5.0 Celtic

  17. £49 ticket is supply and demand

We could fill Parkhead 3 or 4 times over for a game against the huns

    It’s economics, nothing else

  18. Conor Hazard in goal for Plymouth tonight. Never got much game time at Celtic, we preferred Barkas I think, and his loan deal to Dundee was stopped in its’ tracks by the Covid lockown. Always thought there was a keeper there, still only twenty five, maybe we’ll buy him back at some point. 0-0 versus Leeds on the Beeb.
