The chairman, the chief exec and Elvis

300

It is a measure of the impact someone has made that even after they have moved on, superstitions about them endure.  For some, there’s an almost religious believe that a huge figure cannot be diminished by retirement, loss of status or even death (there’s a special 1970s category for Elvis and Bruce Lee).

Prepare yourself: Peter Lawwell is not Elvis Presley.  He can’t sing like Elvis, he seldom dresses like him and under no circumstances should you confuse the supernatural powers attributed to ‘The King’ in the late 70s to our former chief executive.

Peter retired on appointing Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2021, when Dominic McKay started his summer placement in charge.  By September, Michael Nicholson, previously company secretary and in-house lawyer, was temporarily then permanently given the top job.

18 months after he left, Lawwell agreed to replace Ian Bankier as chairman.  As Celtic’s representative, Peter was on the board of the European Club Association (currently vice chair) and was working with Uefa on the new Financial Sustainability Regulations.  It suited the club and our interests that Peter take the role, allowing him to extend Celtic’s influence at Uefa.

Back when Elvis’ died, football club chairmen carried executive roles.  They often opened the doors in the morning, did the accounts, sorted the banking and were always responsible for player contracts and budgeting.  The role has changed.  Lots.

In a modern PLC, a chairman is a non-executive, “unconnected with the day-to-day management of a business and which is instead concerned with effective management of the board”.  That means they are unconnected to player contracts, signing strategies or – and I cannot be clearer on this one – managerial appointments.

Such matters are reserved for the executive team and any major shareholders they are answerable to.  At Celtic, this is Michael Nicholson and Dermot Desmond.

Peter Lawwell was a huge influence in Scottish football and a significant figure in Europe.  Without him at the helm in 2012, Newco Rangers would have been voted into the SPL, debt free and ready to go again.  Back then I got some credit for starting a campaign on this issue, but take my word for it, all credit was due to Peter.  He fought and won the most intense battle Scottish football has ever seen, and like Keyser Soze, he left everyone searching in the shadows.

We scarcely got to see Dom McKay and Michael Nicholson has had two and a half years of low-profile management, a benefit of inheriting a club on the up.  As a consequence, when people think ‘Celtic board’ they assume Elvis lives.  In every meaningful way, Elvis has left the building.  He doesn’t sing the songs or choose the band.  If you think otherwise, you’re howling at the (blue) moon, and ironically, applying absolutely no pressure to the wound.

Is P67 positioning himself so he can be the one that does PL’s autobiography. Think its widely accepted that this is the vehicle to do PL’s bidding, my point is this, if P67 and PL are great Celtic men, why does it seem, and most definetely evident in CQN articles, that they are hell bent on undermining, or seeking to undermine the manager, love him or loathe him?

Maybe the PLC acolytes could discuss this round PL’s jacuzzi, next time.

PL’s legacy will be the things he’s done wrong, 5 way agreement for instance, Res 12, failure to stick up for fans more than anything he may have done right. We are a club underperforming in every aspect with the exception of hoarding cash. Academy is a jobs for the bhoys, who knows if anyone will make the step up anytime soon, are those in charge the best we could afford, for instance, natural talent makes way down south at every opportunity, those that need developed, are they being developed well enough, is there a clear strategy here. Would the Celtic support (and i include PL and P67 for now) accept a first team squad of 25 supplemented by youth players, i think we would, with the caveat being that we have a fair smattering of potential aligned with quality players who can make an instant impact.

Dont let the money in the bank disguise that they are doing anything correctly, its the support that funds the lot, including their salaries and or debenture/shares interest.

I thought Yangbhoy’s post was very good.

Still peddling the same old uninformed pish I see.

If it had not been for Phil and the 4 Requisitioners there would be nothing to notice.

In spite of what emerged from those efforts folk queued up, and still do, to pay their £49.

    ………….

Still glib as fcuk I see?

What has Res12 got to do with you and Phil Mac NOT mentioning once IN SEVEN YEARS that a Celtic hierarchy led by DD and PL, etc, put old Rangers £49 ticket price onto new club Sevco tickets to give off the impression that the old firm game was still a thing?

Not once in SEVEN YEARS since Sevco got promoted in 2016 has either Phil Mac or Auldheid mentioned to their so called fellow fans that the PLC have pulled a fast one and gone along with the same club lie through their compliance with old firm ticket prices from 2012 ie £49.

The fixed ticketing compliance would be far easier to explain to fans than the other guff that you push ie getting rules changed in `any` rule book which `NOBODY` will ever apply to the huns…duh!

The old firm ticket switcheroo was carried out in 2016 and covered up by the Brendan1 media circus how convenient eh?

The ticket `fraud` has been covered up since 2016 by every Celtic mouthpiece on the internet.

    Why would that be then?

Maybe Auldheid and Phil Mac `glibly` assumed that all Tims were dumb and so far up themselves that nobody would ever notice anyway?

Do you think Rangers fans would have bought £49 tickets to help go along with the lie that Celtic didny die if the roles were reversed?

I`ll catch any reply later – oot.

  6. How does this narrative you outline in the article Paul reconcile with the position Iain Bankier outlined in his statement when Dominic McKay was sacked, Bankier said words to the effect “he didn’t fit with the way we work at Celtic, we don’t make unilateral decisions, we are a collaborative team”. His frustration was McKay was making recruitment decisions without chair approval! So what has changed?! And who sets the financial parameters and strategy in which the exec adheres to?

  9. I´m not sure if our boss from Carnlough is a seafaring type but he will need to navigate the Celtic waters

in the coming weeks and will need strength from the great Saint Brendan himself. The great navigator established a monastery on a remote rocky island called Eilach an Naoimh or Holy Isle, south of the isle of Mull, in the 6th Century. He and his monks travelled far and wide in his curragh and there are many legends about him

Did you know people in Rothesay are called Brandanes in his memory.

A mythical island called the island of San Borondon was said to appear and disappear in the Atlantic, not far from the canary Islands

St Brendan is the patron saint of the US Navy.

I´m backing Brendan and the players.

  10. One of the things I don’t understand. Lagerbielke was voted defender of the year in the Swedish league last year. We buy him, hardly play him then end up trying to flog him 6 months later. A Serie A club, Lecce is the interested club. So GL was great in Sweden and is deemed as potentially good enough for the Italian league – but he’s not good enough to face SPFL dross? And Liam Scales is good enough? In what universe? Come on.

It looks to me like Brendan Rodgers isn’t actually interested in developing young talent.

So, Don’t be Cruel, cos It’s Now or Never. The club needs to be All Shook Up before we are overtaken by the Teddy Bear. Tell Peter Lawwell He’ll have to Go as he’s a Hound Dog and I Just Can’t Help Believin that we don’t have to be Indescribably Blue cos It’s Over.

    …….

Re Gus he has no recovery pace and playing him regularly would compromise our defence line being too high up the pitch.

If our defence has to drop back 10 yards then it stretches the game too much leading to a general breakdown in how we’d like to play.

So from a tactical perspective it’s a no for Gus.

Presumably, Scales is playing because he is left footed but he is a very average footballer with his weaknesses unfortunately starting to show in the last while.

We are caught in a trap, I can’t walk out, because Celtic, I love you too much baby

Peter Lawell, why can’t you see what you are doing to me, when people don’t believe a word you are saying.

This can’t go on forever, these suspicious minds, and we can’t fulfill our dreams, on suspicious lies.

Well Elvis is still in the building, even though there’s a guy works down the chip shop swears he’s…you know the ending. Us fans. we aint nothing but hounddogs, crying all the time. My green suede shoes have holes in the Celtic soul that is sending me to heartbreak hotel this season. Celtic, Don’t be cruel, cause if I can dream of a better Celtic land, where directors and fans all go hand in hand, tell me why , oh why, won’t the sun appear. We are lost in a cloud we drop points that’s a pain, we are trapped in a league where things seldom change, but as long as a tim, has the strength to dream, Then Europe in the future we may win away from home and smiles will moonbeam.

  21. Oh my god, Paul.

Seriously PL is an egotistical control freak who has never put Celtic fc first ever.

His oversight of this club looms large and Celtics European record is testament to his lack of vision.

He is risk adverse and this vision continues to this day.

He along with others need removed from the board as soon as possible.

You maybe are to close to the man to see it for what it is.

This club is being corporately mismanaged by any measure you choose to discuss.

Why did the previous CEO leave so quickly?

    Was an NDA used?

Did he want to revamp the old boys club that is making as a board?

The fans have had enough of this and things are going to change.

  22. TANGBHOY I liked your comment on here about how the stadium is looking,3rd rate facilities that the fans are served up ,while them in the directors seats are all on freebies, not having to fork out money for a season ticket ,hospitality to ,being flown all over the world especially when we are in the European leagues, for free ,folk like Rod Stewart and Billy Connolly have a free seat for life ,Celtic Supporters my erchie, while they eat and drink in the comfort inside Celtic Park ,hundreds of our fellow supporters stand outside in all kinds of weather, waiting on the turnstiles opening, what happened to The Hotel ,the Museum at least they would have been somewhere to go ,would 20 million pounds be enough for the hotel ?instead of upgrading Barrowfield Training Ground.

  23. Roll on 3:00 when all the hunterlopers disappear tae watch their beloved “new” side steamroller over the sheep, I have no idea why they are on here, well fae P67’s view, as they bring nothing but chaos tae the site with their goading of good Tims, as i previously said you can spot them a mile away as if brains were made of dynamite they don’t have enough tae let aff a squib.
