The Great Football Swindle

1176

On the face of it, it’s just too crazy.  Why would Craig Whyte become a director of Sevco 5088 Ltd, the vehicle his collaborator and Our New Hero, Charles Green, would use to buy the assets of Rangers from the administrators?

What options did he have?

He was, is, and for the foreseeable future, will be… the only show in town.

Whyte had controlling shares in Rangers and a security over Ibrox and other assets, as well as personal guarantees to Ticketus.  If he wanted to realise the value of these assets, and protect himself from the consequences the Ticketus action which materialised this week, he was probably the only man at Ibrox last year you could guarantee would not, walk away.

Either Whyte had to find a 100% secure proxy to carry out his actions or he needed controlling interest in Sevco 5088, and Whyte is not a man who strikes me as having many strong trust bonds out there.

The Companies House form which STV produced (again, credit where it’s due) was always going to be fatal to Whyte’s plans, if produced, but it would have been no more than an insurance policy against Our New Hero going rogue.

The form hitting Companies House is not the moment you become a director in a company, that happens as soon as an offer is made and accepted.  The company is obliged to inform Companies House within a short period (lazy journalism moment, I can’t be bothered looking it up), but failure to do so only incurs a small penalty fine.

Whyte and Earley were controlling directors and, in case Green reneged on their agreement, they would have documentary evidence to prove it.  If Green had performed on demand, they may never have had to produce the document.

A number of possibilities could explain the fact that Green transferred the assets of Sevco 5088 to Sevco Scotland:

He thought that Whyte would be reluctant to incriminate himself further and would simple go away.

He thought he could transform the business and compensate Whyte with the proceeds.

He is simply not smart enough to know how these things operate.

Or he may have a subsequent agreement with Whyte terminating his involvement with Sevco 5088, although this contradicts his evidence to STV cameras earlier this week.

The weeks ahead are likely to be so busy it will be hard to retain focus on the critical path.  Green has known for some days that he would have to go and replace himself with someone he can sell as a ‘true Rangers man’ to the most gullible people to walk on hind legs before season ticket renewal time, but even that date will seem a long way off.

Whyte will not budge until and unless his money is covered.  We’re talking £18m to Ticketus and no doubt some more for his trouble.  In playing the Sevco 5088 director registration form, his Doomsday Card, he has invalidated Newco’s associate membership of the SFA.  He has called into question the fair and open disposal of assets by Duff and Phelps and the entire administration process.  He even stayed quiet until Green flushed out a fair amount of supporter cash.

Some of the least trustworthy looking people in history, assisted by a supporting cast who were willing to bat away all concerns and warnings for a crumb or two from their table, have trashed every last inch of what we used to know as Rangers Football Club. This was not the act of Green, Whyte and Sir David Murray alone, many authors wrote this story.

On any measure of humanity, the monkeys, the organ grinders, the cheerleaders and their flunkies screwed the Rangers fan in the street to a ridiculous degree.

The next actions are for the stock market and some technically minded police officers as they try to figure out the Great Football Swindle.

At this side of the city we’ve been warning about exactly this link since Green told everyone Craig Whyte was happy to walk away for £2.  It was astonishingly stupid for anyone to believe that.  Really, really, really stupid.  The most stupid thing a whole bunch of stupid people has ever done.

Ever.

Just stupid.

  1. Tiger Woods could face disqualification from the Masters for an alleged illegal drop during his second round at Augusta.

World No 1 Woods saw his approach shot at the 15th hit the flag stick then spin back into the water, just as he was making a charge to the top of the leaderboard.

He decided against playing from the drop-zone and instead went back to where his original shot was played, but decided to move two yards further back, from where he produced a stunning shot to make bogey.

    Hole 15 hurt Woods

However, rule 26-1 states that he should play his second attempt as near as possible from the spot of the first, and in Woods’ own words he decided to move it two yards back.

“I went down to the drop area, that wasn’t going to be a good spot, because obviously it’s into the grain and it was a little bit wet,” said Woods.

“I went back to where I played it from, but I went two yards further back and I took, tried to take two yards off the shot of what I felt I hit. I felt that that was going to be the right decision to take off four right there. And I did, it worked out perfectly.”

It is Woods’ own admission that he moved the ball further back that could be his undoing, as that could be deemed by officials to be a breach of the rules, and that would carry a two-shot penalty.

    Incorrect scorecard

However, since Woods has already signed his scorecard, it would then get even worse as signing for an incorrect scorecard comes with the penalty of disqualification from the event.

While it would be a huge move from Masters officials to throw the world No 1 out of the prestigious event, Sky Sports pundit David Howell told Masters Breakfast that Woods should be disqualified.

    Tiger should go

“I think that interview would lead you to say no, they can’t keep him in the tournament,” he told the programme. “The rule is very clear. He has taken the option to drop and play from where he played his last shot and it seems like Tiger has got a little bit confused in his mind.

“He’s thinking stroke and distance and is thinking what he’d be able to do had he dropped back in line with where the ball last crossed the hazard.

“You can go back as far as you like in that instance, but he hasn’t chosen that option. The way he describes it in that interview, he has in his mind decided to lengthen the shot by two more yards.

“It’s a very, very fine margin, but the way his thought process came about during the interview… I don’t see how they can keep him in the tournament.

“I think he will end up being DQ’d on the back of the evidence he gave in that interview.”

With reports of the incident growing, Masters officials face a huge problem when they get back to Augusta on Saturday with the biggest name in golf under scrutiny.

The answer was to a post by EDB who made the point that Wilson had Griffiths in his pocket, i was making a counter point on Griffiths behalf, despite Hibs being dreadful last week, Hooper and Stokes did not take Mcpake apart either, thats the relevance IMO, if you cant see it no problem, in addition Celtic’s performance was overhyped last week.

  5. If it …… is a commission.

An independent commission is just what the governing bodies will welcome.

Whilst the investigation goes on SFA /SFL will do nothing.

When asked about deadlines for the Ibrox club to respond to the Whyte tapes, Regan said there was no deadline.

This is the same tactic that has been employed all through this saga.

A little more than a year ago, Rangers FC went into administration. In the process of the club being handed over into the hands of a new company, the SPL board went out of their way to hand responsibility about its member’s – i.e. Rangers’ – future into the hands of their supporters. Those people at the board simply declining to do their job, or even contemplating that Rangers might have been led into administration by a criminal – as has been confirmed over the course of last year (and you hardly find a journalist north of Hadrian’s Wall to say so). So off it went to the impartial fans of all the other SPL teams and had e.g. Bayern Munich been in a similar position and faced a vote from the BL fans, they would have played Bundesliga 2 football for a year or so too. A farce from top to bottom.

Not that this was unexpected by the SPL bosses, who obviously assumed that the challenge for silverware and European places would be greater, people would come back to watch their teams in the new one-horse race in droves. Those same fans who cried blood-and-vengeance at their clubs, should they not vote Rangers out of the SPL. Those same fans who apparently developed a greater liking to gardening, video-gaming, or curling during the course of the season.

It did not take the SPL board long to resume its powers after that, urging (to say the least) the SFL to place Rangers not into the lowest tier (according to the SFL rules), but into the First Division. For anything else would imperil the SPL’s TV deals, constructed neatly around 4 to 6 Old Firm games per season. The SFA jumped in and told the SFL that for the greater good of the game, that was the way to do it. The – naughty and unruly – SFL stuck to their own rules though – as well as the opinion of their chairmen and fans. Rangers were included in the set-up like any new team, in the lowest tier.

The SPL quickly got back into stride after that stumble and coerced the SFL into accepting a TV deal that included the screaming of the SFL’s Rangers, much to the benefit of the SPL clubs.

That did not help the state of affairs of the SPL though. Facts and figures show that its income has dropped, attendances went down at an alarming rate, despite what the SPL’s boss Doncaster tries to tell the audience. With the SPL facing various legal bills now, a TV deal only known to Doncaster and possibly his close ally Lawwell, and many SPL clubs hardly able to sustain themselves, does anyone actually think that this same body is actually able to keep up with the financial backing of the SFL, the back-up they proposed alongside their 12-12-18 reconstruction?

A recent survey was clearly telling that the football supporters were opposed to the 12-12-18 plan the SPL tries to sell as the last-possible option (why?). SFL clubs were asking their supporters about this and while they all agreed that change was required, there was a clear understanding that 12-12-18 was not the format to move forward, nor was it required straight after this season.

But this time, the SPL bosses – along with those at the SFA – seem to disregard the opinion of the clubs’ supporters, not least those of the SFL. Selective democracy? Rather on the contrary, the chairmen of Dundee United and Aberdeen show great endeavour to discredit other chairmen like those of St. Mirren and Ross County, who appear to stand firm in their critique of the proposed changes. Those who were fore-runners of fan-power and the call for „sporting integrity“ – which essentially ignored that fact that Rangers FC on the park were indeed the same Rangers FC as before, despite new owners (“not guilty until proven” springs to mind) – now deny this very same right to their fellow chairmen and supporters? And in fact blame them for being self-interested and not looking for the greater good of the game?

These people certainly don’t do irony! Last season, the whole lot of them acted purely out of self-interest when voting Rangers out of the SPL, looking for greater gains and more money than ever before, not least the likes of the New Firm, Aberdeen and Dundee United. How could they have envisaged that they will end – again – up in mid-table of a weakened SPL, crowds dwindling, quality dropping? How could they have envisaged that the likes of Inverness Caledonian Thistle or Ross County put up a more sterner challenge to the league race than their own distinguished teams?

So why the urgency in the reconstruction, a reconstruction lead and essentially forced through by the SPL, a reconstruction that is being tauted as „now or never“?

Casting aside the rather convoluted split system that does not help Scottish football develop or being any more attractive than it is now – not least for those teams in the 18-league. There is only one real reason why the SPL teams need their way here, the reconstruction under their terms: the plight of the SPL.

It faces up to law cases with regards to money owed to a pub-owner (1.7m), prize money owed to Rangers FC (2.3m, oldco or newco does not matter), and face the legal bills of their very own EBT-case chase from Harper McLeod. Apart from the TV deals that only Doncaster and probably Lawwell have seen, TV deals that should help them pay the SFL teams after the reconstruction? TV deals that are not yet signed and delivered? You wonder why no-one in the media has ever had the audacity to ask the SPL about their financing programme? Or shall I say moonbeams? And with those Doncaster and Co. run about and try to bully their fellow SPL chairmen and those of the SFL into agreeing to their deal? You wonder if they actually check their accounts every now and then?

Let’s make no mistake here. The SPL is walking on empty and if the reconstruction is not being pressed through this year, there might not be a SPL left in 6 months time. Which in turn leaves a dozen teams without a league and facing the prospect of asking their way back into the Scottish game via the SFL and … the Rangers route.

The SFL teams should be very aware of this. They hold nigh all the aces after the SPL dug their own grave last summer. They may actually start to invite the likes of St. Mirren and Ross County into the SFL under their terms of reconstruction. There’s nothing that should stop the SFL taking over the reigns of all four divisions in Scotland again this summer, keeping the current format, but under a hierarchical structure – again. And while the TV deals et al are being utilized by one body for all, learned people can start to create a model better suited for the Scottish game as such, in time for the season after next. The SPL and a cabal of chairmen have ruined the whole Scottish set-up, mainly out of self-interest. It is time that they are removed from the game, for the better of the game.

In that respect, stand firm Ross County, stand firm SFL!

  14. The USPGA have had their deliberations interrupted by a wee Scotsman called Sandy Bryson.

He told them that, though signing for the wrong score card is usually an automatic disqualification, his original offence did not come to light until after the card has been signed. Therefore it was not an offence at the time he signed off on it and we can issue this 2 stroke penalty because we want to.

However, to reflect the gravity of the situation, we are also issuing a fine……….

The only downside is Hibs are going to end that hoodoo sooner or later – but after today, few could begrudge them the cup this season if they are to win it.
