The international precious commodities

505

The first reaction to the international break is never positive: “How many players do we have away and what condition will we get them back in?” The team which stopped the ten had more representatives at the 1998 World Cup than any other side (a remarkable achievement), but we caught a cold from these exploits the following season.

Leigh Griffiths would no doubt be delighted to start for Scotland this week. Representing your country is one of the things footballers look back on in their later years, so for his own sake, I hope Leigh gets the call, but for Celtic’s I’d be quite happy for him to have a quiet couple of weeks.

Griffiths, Scott Brown and Nir Bitton are precious commodities to Celtic right now, we can’t afford international mishaps for any of them. There’s better cover for the others who will be on international duty, but Stefan Johansen in particular looks like could do with a break.

You’ll know Packie Bonner’s autobiography, The Last Line, launches this month. Packie has a night at Walkabout in Glasgow on 29th October, where the big man will speak about his career, and many other things, past and contemporary. Tickets are available here.

I’m not naive. I know that the GB and other young Celtic fans will attract the attention of those with darker political motives.

But what we’re seeing from police Scotland goes way beyond that and encompasses many more people and wider issues.

I agree with you, mate. It’s bad enough that a law exists to criminalise behaviour which would not breach laws elsewhere. Significantly worse that some sections of our police force use that law to decide arbitrarily what they will or will not allow.

As for ‘putting kids in the firing line’,they ARE in the firing line. Go to 111 at a home game, watch how they are victimised. They’re in the firing line because they are there to support their team.

  8. Can I point out that the young Celtic supporters in the video clip have absolutely nothing to do with the Green Brigade.

the GB had their own banner at Hamilton on Sunday which was displayed in the Celtic end prior to kick off.

I find it incredible that any Celtic supporter could criticise supporters over this and not focus on the hostility from the authorities.

  9. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

Can I just point out a couple of general things.

Last night there was a bit of debate on the site about the lack of posts and the fact that some posters (like myself for long periods) no longer post – certainly as often as they used to.

Some of this might be down to the new shape of the blog and the adverts etc, some comments I have seen reflect on the adversarial nature of some opinions whether they be on politics, football, Celtic or whatever.

From my own point of view, from around November last year I had to take a step back from previous levels of CQN activity due to family and work committments and so there can be weeks that go by without me even seeing the blog let alone posting. Sometimes, that is just the way it is and I am sure I am not alone in that.

Hopefully i can regain some spare time and write some more and do some more fundraising etc but until thenCQN will have to take a back seat.

On the question of Police Scotland and the OB act.

I watched the video of the Police Officers confiscating the banner from the young Celtic fans and to be honest thought it was a disgrace and worthy of real legal challenge.

The Police do not have the right to confiscate any item of property from anyone unless that property is being used in the commission of an offence.

In this instance, they seem to accpet that the banner was not offensive per se and that they confiscated it in a supermarket car park.

They then justified some of their actions by arguing that of the banner ( that will be the non offensive banner – was displayed in the car park then it could be seen from inside the ground.

Well, hold on, does the OB act now extend to the banning of non offensive banners ( and that is a subjective test ) being seen from inside the ground?

If so, can someone be arrested or indeed have property confiscated if they display it at the window of their home that overlooks Firhill where it might be seen from the ground?

I realise that these were kids and that worries me. Would a Police officer react in the same way to say a group of 50 year olds who had the nous to not only question under what authority the officers were acting but also make it plain that they thought that the police officers were breaking the law and who would ask them straight if they were acting on the instructions of the match commander and seek the identity of the match commander for the purposes of the civil action that would follow such an illegal action.

The Police force in Scotland are directed and instructed by senior officers and it is not uncommon for Police “policy” to be quite rightly challeneged as being unlawful and going beyond the law of the land.

I don’t think the police officers had any right wahtsoever to temporarily conficate any banner and rightly or wrongly this is another example of the football fan being treated as a second class citizen.

I doubt very much if a Rugby fan would be treated in the same manner.

  10. Oh and the banner had the name of a Celtic supporters club on it followed by AXE THE ACT.

With respect you don’t know the facts here.

The OBaF Bill was introduced because of the behaviour of Rangers players and officials in the ‘shame game’.

The Bill was passed and since it has become an Act, has widely criminalised football supporters.

This Act is politically motivated and politically driven by the government and the police.

The Celtic support haven’t ‘politicised’ ourselves as a consequence of this. No, it has happened TO us, not BECAUSE of us.

She answers, “My son, you cannot offend me. When you’re as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I’m sure that there’s nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive.”

“Well, I’ve always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.”

She responds, “Well, let’s see what we can do about that…

    1) You have to be single and

    2) You must be Catholic.”

The cab driver is very excited and says, “Yes, I’m single and Catholic!”

“OK” the nun says. “Pull into the next alley.”

The nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush. But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying.

“My dear child,” said the nun, “why are you crying?”

“Forgive me, but I’ve sinned. I lied and I must confess, I’m married and I’m Jewish.”

The nun says, “That’s OK. My name is Kevin and I’m going to a Halloween party!”

The majority of the GB have been arrested at some point since the introduction of the Act. I don’t have exact figures and most have had spurious charges dropped.

They come from a wide variety of backgrounds just like the rest of the Celtic support.

Anyone suggesting that they are using others or being used by others is quite simply wrong.

  32. Interesting comments by VVD regarding playing in the English Premier League.

He certainly didn’t look as accomplished when he first arrived a Celtic from Groningen, he was not International class.

He developed a great deal at Celtic and left a much better player. The fact he has adapted to the much higher standard in the EPL says much for the big man’s talent, determination and ability to raise his game. But the fact that someone can leave Celtic and within weeks look like a top quality CB against teams like Chelsea say a lot about the coaching and conditioning he got at Celtic.

Victor took a season to bed into the EPL.

I believe his recent comments are directed towards Danny Blind, saying I’m ready to be a Dutch International Player.

    Good luck to him.

As far as the lack of posters on CQN is concerned, I agree with BRT&H, there are many reasons fholk don’t post. Certainly over the years I’ve been on (10+) my posting habits have fluctuated greatly.

Was even a victim of the new “are you a Hun” initiation, even though I’d been posting for years before that was the standard welcome.

Yet looking at the names Winning Captains posted yesterday, many of them weren’t blogging long term, some have always been occasional posters and some just fluctuate.

One name caught my eye, Celticlover, who was an original poster and pure gent, always treated everyone with maximum respect.

Well he posted that he was going to walk the Santiago de Compostela.

Never seen him post again, after that, I like to think he may have just raised himself up the Spiritual plain and had more worthy pursuits, who knows?

Yet in all my time through my posting no shows I’ve always read Paul67’s articles, the one excellent constant.

I remember the days before CQN and the like, not a lot of solace on any media for us Celtic fans.

So I never take it for granted, the work that the ghuys are putting in to bring the site up to the next level is certainly appreciated by me.

Once again – Thanks to all those that make it happen.
