The last soviet in the Breakaway Union

126

Like a scene from Monty Python’s Holy Grail, eight (and counting) of the 12 breakaway clubs saw their steely commitment a European Super League transform into a desire to “run away”.  Liverpool owner, John W Henry, very eloquently said that he was never going to proceed without the support of fans, which I do not believe.  The threat of expulsion by Fifa and Uefa, and legal action by the Government, were the deciding factors.  Take the opportunity to listen to Henry’s comments, if only to hear him repeatedly refer to Liverpool as “LFC”.  It is as though he learned all he knows about the club by text message.

As well as the English six, Atletico Madrid and Inter also withdrew.  There was a time in 1991 when Kazakhstan was the only remaining soviet in the Soviet Union.  Soon they Kazakhs will have something in common with a well-tailored European, probably from Madrid.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister called the breakaway a cartel, oblivious that football leagues everywhere are a cartel.  The cartel in England and Wales excludes clubs from Scotland.  If he was truly interested in building UK cultural ties, he would use his legislative threats to curb this cartel’s operations.

Although European Super League plans are shelved, no one in the game can be satisfied this morning.  We now know there are billions of euros available to whoever can pull a deal together, money Uefa and the national leagues leave on the table.  That thought will spark neurons until the next iteration becomes public.  If you think the money men will shrug and walk away, you don’t know much about business.

Europe now needs leadership; people who can conceive competitions that allow clubs to reach the top of the game through merit alone, delivering some of that money left on the table.  Maybe our man on the ECA will have some ideas.

You would have thought that after 17 years at Celtic he might have been able to think beyond the old firm and Neil Lennon, so I would be highly surprised!

Never has total mediocrity been given such an elevated status as you see on CQN about Lawwell.

To this day, I still can’t get my head around Lawwell appointing Lennon a 2nd time, especially after Neil made this comment..

“I’m not big on tactics. It’s about the players and they have to go out onto the pitch and apply that.”

    Yet another Lawwell disaster.

Every cock up at every football club in the future really should come under the dictionary term ‘Lawwellesque’

  6. On Tom Rogic. Not the boys fault he keeps getting injured.A very unfortunate thing. His body not up to the stresses and strains of full time football. Not the first, won’t be the last.

  7. Anyone else paid for Red TV tonight? I have and the main reason is that even watching Celtic at their worst this season is better than watching the EPL. I fell asleep during Leeds v Liverpool and was mostly checking for the chauvin result during Chelsea v Brighton last night. Very poor fare

    Hail Hail

  8. GENE,

I wish your Pal Ray all the best.

Ive had my Bowel problems also in the last 15 Months or so, and the Hospital were intending on removing part of my bowel just over a year ago, but then changed their minds as my weak heart wouldnt stand the surgery…Apparently ? I had Two separate Heart Attacks a few months previous…While under surgery.

I do worry about it from time to time, but I will do just about anything to stay OUT of any Hospital.

I wish you and Ray all the best.

  9. Big Jimmy,

I had my vaccine on a Saturday morning and had a good drink on Saturday night. I hope it works as well for you!

  10. Ive seen several Posts on here recently about ” Bikes” and Bike Shops etc….

Would I be right in saying that any man who sells Bikes……must be a ” PEDDLAR” ?

    LOL.

I made that one up myself…my apologises, but this self isolation has really got to me over the last few months.

  11. So the ESL is apparently ‘dead in the water’ – I don’t think so.

Maybe this hastily put together bid was merely a ‘stalking horse’ – an attempt to flush out all and any opposition and guage the strength of it.

The naming JP Morgan as the source of start-up finance, shows that without question money is available for such a venture.

My guess is that the protagonists will look closely at their PR operation and ensure when next the Super League proposal surfaces, as it surely will, they will all be stronger & better prepared in the face of criticism.

Perhaps a World Super League, rather than a European one will emerge. I’m sure there are clubs & franchises in South America, US & China, that would jump at the chance.

Football’s equivalent of Pandora’s Box will be opened again – no doubt.

Thanks mate, I need to get Taxi to and from the Vaccine centre at the Hydro, cos I cant walk very far these days. Since my Jab is for around 7.10pm, I have thought about my Taxi taking me straight to a Pub right after the jab, as I could have about two hours drinking before the Pubs close ( i think ?)

Then again, maybe its best if I wait overnight til Tuesday Morning around 11am…and order a Taxi to take me to a Pub…and then I can go ” Radio Rental”, and end up pure Steaming Boats ?

  16. Tommy injured in warmup on Sunday 9 seasons at Celtic, 93 league starts.

WOW quite a stat Squire, another example of a badly run club going nowhere, I’ve never understood why so many supporters rate Rogic he scores the odd spectacular goal then disappears for months on end, we should have got rid years ago. A bench warmer at best.

  17. maybe Tom is in the sweet spot of not very expensive salary, and more about appearance money and bonuses, when he is fit i enjoy watching the fella.

agree , no time for sentiment, no loanees or want away’s for the rest of the season , time to see what we have left and that’s not a lot , so they either give a performance or be shipped out.

  21. I love Big Tam Rogic…I wish we could have seen much more of him. He just GLIDES across the Pitch when hes Fit and ON Form…and he sometimes reminds me of Zindine Zidane by the way he moves/glides.

    Pretty thin gruel.

The money men will have better things to spend their money on.

Or they might get an invite to come inside the tent.

The main thing is that when change does come it will have to be in some way fan friendly.

The “Cold night in Stoke” placard will become an icon and rightly so.

Regarding your other points — rationality has left the building / jumped the shark.

The problem with your analysis of the CL set up is that the winners of the smaller leagues don’t last long.

Plus our efforts in Europe have been shambolic at best — even when we have the skill we lack the desire.

Consequently physician — heal thy self.

You have been a sock puppet for PL’s brain farts for 17 years now.

Time possibly for a period of reflective silence.

    Will you never learn …

CMcG — World Cup Holder / Hide and Seek Champion and then some.

LG — Waster of the highest order.

If they are the future then we will soon pine for the recent past.

  26. We have had the resources in the last 5 years to mount a real CL challenge.

Unfortunately we were working under a B++ manager who was too proud to defend.

In the last 10 years we have had a full CL winning team pass through CP.

Unfortunately we could not wait to sell them on when there was a profit to be had.

Once we were a club that invested in the squad — now we just sell them on.

At the start it was about PL’s bonus now it is about survival.

    Sad really.

  27. Moisey, did you not read the small print when you signed up for CQN?

Long gone are the days when Paul would not only post an article but also fully engage in the ensuing debate/conversation.

These days, the article for most on here is nothing more than a distraction, a clumsy, one-dimensional ice-breaker for the more nuanced and informative sub-plots that you’ll find in the replies.

You will get the odd numpty who will berate you relentlessly for daring to have a different view to that of our venerable host, but last time I checked, we are all still Celtic supporters….a club, if not a blog, open to all!

  28. Does anyone have any idea where Tim Williamson the Head of Physio is, he is not now coming on to treat players?

  29. Big Tam’s cup final goal against Aberdeen to clinch the first of our trebles was a moment of pure joy.

In BR’s three seasons he started when fit and completed more games than people realize

In the 8 years he’s been playing for Celtic he’s scored a lot of very important goals that no one else on the team would have been capable of

  30. Brutal after all the failures we have had in the recent past that it is all now the fault of TR.

Some people just want to blame the individual rather than the system.
