The last soviet in the Breakaway Union

126

Like a scene from Monty Python’s Holy Grail, eight (and counting) of the 12 breakaway clubs saw their steely commitment a European Super League transform into a desire to “run away”.  Liverpool owner, John W Henry, very eloquently said that he was never going to proceed without the support of fans, which I do not believe.  The threat of expulsion by Fifa and Uefa, and legal action by the Government, were the deciding factors.  Take the opportunity to listen to Henry’s comments, if only to hear him repeatedly refer to Liverpool as “LFC”.  It is as though he learned all he knows about the club by text message.

As well as the English six, Atletico Madrid and Inter also withdrew.  There was a time in 1991 when Kazakhstan was the only remaining soviet in the Soviet Union.  Soon they Kazakhs will have something in common with a well-tailored European, probably from Madrid.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister called the breakaway a cartel, oblivious that football leagues everywhere are a cartel.  The cartel in England and Wales excludes clubs from Scotland.  If he was truly interested in building UK cultural ties, he would use his legislative threats to curb this cartel’s operations.

Although European Super League plans are shelved, no one in the game can be satisfied this morning.  We now know there are billions of euros available to whoever can pull a deal together, money Uefa and the national leagues leave on the table.  That thought will spark neurons until the next iteration becomes public.  If you think the money men will shrug and walk away, you don’t know much about business.

Europe now needs leadership; people who can conceive competitions that allow clubs to reach the top of the game through merit alone, delivering some of that money left on the table.  Maybe our man on the ECA will have some ideas.

  1. Does anyone have any idea where Tim Williamson the Head of Physio is

maybe he wasn’t fancied when they saw him at training, just like a lot of them.

  2. You can watch Celtic tonight on Alba at 7.30 as the Ghirls are taking on the Huns , don’t expect them to win though as the huns have spent money they don’t have making their female squad the strongest in the country , but I live in hope COYGIG :)

  3. Maditch- I never said they were the future.

I believe Cal Mc, can under a new manager get back to the player he was a year or 2 ago.

LG – At least play 2 up top. Aye Leigh’s time is up but Eddie is never a 1 up top, hold the ball up striker, more of a partnership needed for him so if its Eddie and Griff great but the point is Eddie is part of a group that has failed and wants away.

Also no more loan players in our first team play our own players.

    D :)

  4. It’s amazing how easily Parkheadcumsalford’s point was twisted so people could cross the road in order to include themselves in the offended group.

Nobody, but nobody, ever said you cannot come on here to criticise P67 or his views.

The point was made and made clearly that what was being complained about was people coming on here, and leaving their preferred sites, solely to abuse and vilify the host. Such behaviour is both offensive and stupid, and the very definition of trolling.

If you do not like this site, the people on it or the range of views expressed here, then why bother? What effect, apart from rancour, are you achieving?

I have the good fortune to be allowed to visit Sentinel Celts and post occasionally there. My views may differ from many on there but I do not go there to insult those with differing views, and there are many of them. I actually admire a fair few of them and would regard it as rude to call them out as sock-puppets, abettors of Sevco, gullible, or paid shills for the Dailly Record.

But I can still disagree with them.

I am glad that they created a site where like minds can meet and discourse. They still have arguments and disagreements and even some fall-outs and flounces but, like CQN, for the most part, the regulars are satisfied with the forum and only a malicious begrudger would want to deprive them of their safe haven, their neighbourhoos virtual pub.

There are many on CQN that I disagree with and fall out with but very few whose hands I would not shake.

I draw the line for decent discourse only with fascists and nazis, and their apologists whether they be Trumpists or Putinists. Thankfully, in the world of Cetica they are rarer than Hen’s Teeth or Handsome Huns.

  5. Yesterday I wrote about season 1999/2000 which promised so much at the start but ended up disastrously.

However, the highlight of the season for me was the team Kenny put out on the final game of the season in front of an almost 50,000 crowd, even though there was still no sign of a new manager or backroom staff, unknown tae us the Chairman and CEO would also have to be replaced, still the true supporters showed up.

The team that sunny afternoon was Gould, Goodwin Mjallby Kennedy and Lambert, McColligan Fotheringham McCann and Berkovic, Lynch and Burchill. With Convery Miller and our wee Talisman being playing subs.

Brian McColligan, Jim Goodwin, Liam Miller, John Convery and Ryan McCann were making their debut, while John Kennedy, Simon Lynch and Mark Fotheringham, youngest ever Celt at the time replacing big JFK, had already made theirs as well as unused sub Paul Shields. Oh and our wee team won 2-0.

As bad as that season was we had the League’s top goalscorer, Mark Viduka 25 goals, the biggest home and away wins, 7-0 and 6-0 respectively against the sheep.

  6. Roy Keane

Why are Celtic the only club considering plucking this guy from the pundits chair to give him a job?

Why is he never even floated as a candidate for any other job but this one.

he would be an unmitigated disaster in my opinion.

  7. Bada

He was at Celtic this year although he has left a few times in the past and returned, not sure what’s going on.

  8. D66 @ 5.11

    Apologies for the sharp tone.

Just a case that the hurt is strong at the moment.

  9. RC

The last I heard on wee Karamoko was that he refused to go out on loan, where the better prospects all are

like Jack Henry Belgian player of the year.

    Bring him home CSC

Big Tam’s cup final goal against Aberdeen to clinch the first of our trebles was a moment of pure joy.

In BR’s three seasons he started when fit and completed more games than people realize

Brutal after all the failures we have had in the recent past that it is all now the fault of TR.

Some people just want to blame the individual rather than the system.

    Tabloid trash from Tabloid minds

    ——-

Tom Rogic has started 93 league games for Celtic in 9 seasons.

In the 3 Rodgers seasons he started 15, 18 and 16 league games respectively, and was replaced in 9, 8 and 10 respectively.

The previous season he was replaced in 19 of the 24 league games he started.

How making such an observation is “tabloid trash” is beyond me.

Has there ever been a web site more inappropriately named than ‘Football Insider’, day after day its a load of old tripe, here’s a recent example…

Alex McLeish has backed Celtic plans to shake-up their recruitment team with three big-name departures in the coming days. The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted recent signings had failed to live up to expectations at Parkhead. Asked if the Hoops needed a shakeup of their recruitment setup, McLeish told Football Insider “They certainly need to do something this season for next season…” they then go on to repeat the old news about Gary Penrice leaving as well as a couple of scouts,

I keep meaning not to click on them, then get caught out, worser, other sites are now quoting them as a source when speculating their own nonsense …

C’mon Celtic, tell your supporters what’s happening – and tell us that in spite of how it looks we actually do want to qualify for the Champions League next season. They’ve surely not thrown in the towel but given their performance this season who could say anything with any certainty…

Great jog down memory lane. Just about knew the players. The one that I didn’t recognise at all, was Brian McColligan. I think John Convery later played for Cliftonville.

sevco invincible league season, who cares, its not even a pale shadow of a Quadruple Treble not to mention that we have actually had a proper invincible season unbeaten in ALL domestic competition,

and all this 55 nonsense, as far as i can remember there was no hullaballo over 51, 52, 53 or 54, so whats so special about 55? oh thats right, its to remind everybody that they are not a new club, unbroken history etc, only in Scotland would you get such nonsense.

‘Nobody, but nobody, ever said you cannot come on here to criticise P67 or his views’

Sadly, this is untrue. There are a select bunch of self-appointed ‘blog police’ on here who jump at the chance to tell exactly that to those whose opinions differ to that of the host.

It could be argued that their pompous attempts to quash certain views has contributed to the significant drop in active posters and replies on the site.

What do I know? Perhaps they will be happier on a blog where a few dozen mrmbers just spend all day agreeing with each other…

  18. Rogic came halfway through the 2012/13 season and spent half the 2013/2014 season on loan. I don’t think you can hold it against him that he wasn’t picked before he signed for us or when was in Australia.

In less than 8 seasons he’s started 97 games according to Transfermarkt

If you’re figures are to be believed (!) he finished 20 out of 49 games. Which, like I said is more than people would think of a player who “doesn’t last 90 minutes”

‘Vote for the Union and we’ll be invited to join the EPL. I remember that in 2014.’

I don’t remember anyone saying that.

Are you sure it wasn’t ‘if Scotland leaves the UK there’s no chance of getting into the EPL’, which isn’t the same thing.

The only downside to the collapse of the super league is that Ryan Christie and his mammoth ego won’t arrive in the EPL just after the party’s finished.
