The loss of our greatest living legend

1049

Sean Fallon was known as The Iron Man, a hard left back at a time when pretty much all footballers were hard.  I met him and his wife Myra at their home a few months ago to prepare an interview in advance of his autobiography, which is due for release soon, the hard-man reputation could not have been further from the character of the person.

He was the most generous spirited man I have been in the company of for years.  Myra is a force of nature, unquestionably the wind in his sails.  You have never met a happier couple.

The stories he told about how Celtic were transformed from a sporting irrelevance into one of the most powerful and feared clubs in Europe were incredible.  His story was one of huge and dramatic achievement.  You and I are the beneficiaries.

The players he signed are legendary.  Kenny Dalglish, who was in tears in Sean’s home the night he agreed to go to Liverpool, Danny McGrain, a person Sean could not speak highly enough about, and countless more.  He was a committed Celtic man but took no pleasure in the death of Rangers, such was his generosity of spirit.

Sean described Jock, himself and Sir Robert Kelly as a three man team who had the vision to drive Celtic forward.  He believed that when Sir Robert died in 1971 the club’s loss was significant. Nothing was the same again.

His own parting from Celtic, in 1975, was far from satisfactory, but if he told me once, he told me 10 times, “I don’t want a single word said against Celtic”.  The club that you and I recognise is the creation of Jock, Sean and Sir Robert.  They transformed an amateurish football club into a legendary movement.  He, more than anyone I ever met, never wanted a figurative goal scored against this legend.

Today we have lost one of the architects of all we hold dear, a man who achieved the Miracle of Lisbon.  His insights reach back into the depths of our character.  His decision to author an autobiography is a gift to you and me.  I’ll share many of his anecdotes between now and when it’s published.

My sincere condolences to Myra, son Sean and all the family.  We have lost the man who was our greatest living legend but they have lost a great husband, father and grandfather.  A remarkable life has come to an end.

I think it’s time that not only should Celtic decrease the kids season books but take into account the amount of young students that can’t afford to go to watch the hoops.

The price of food at Celtic park is horrendous aswel.

Celtic was born on the foundation of charity!!

    Maybe the upper echelons

should make it financially viable for

the future Celtic fans to go and watch Celtic without having to chose whether they pay their bills or follow the hoops.hail hail.

  2. Just watched re-run of RTE show of us v Barca. Didn’t realise how steamin Liam Brady was and how generous Dunphy was to us, because I was delirious at the time. I have a massive increase of respect for Mr Dunphy, the usual assumption with Liam , and GIRUY to to Bill O’Herilhy. Liam was steamin and sounding thick, Eamon was steamin and making sense, Bill as always couldn’t wait to get ingrrlksh back on

I remember my first taste of Bill living the English dream

Scott McDonald scores vs Man U, “We need to up our game, … Sorry Manchester need to up our gam..

For all those who are in Scotland and now confused! Eamon Dunphy is controversial but was on our side that night. Liam Brady tends not be seen in Dublin other that steamin, even on live TV, but it seems to be Ok!! He does have no idea of Celtic players names or his address.

Bill O’Herlihy(sic) is. Anglophobe of the highest order

    I love Dunphy!

Up at 6 for taxi and flight to Glasgow! Cannae wait

    Hail hail

I totally agree. Get that stadium packed and I’m ok with making the CL games pricey, that is where the demand really is.

It just shows that the appetite is there.

I hope Celtic, shock horror, actually take on board how good the Tribute Rangers crowds have been this season and make sure that there are 50000+ ST holders next season. The depression is only now starting to bite and we have a long way to go until the other side.

Incidentally, the only way the Tribute R crowds are going is down, the only way the Celtic Support is going is UP IMO.

It is all about That Team on the Celtic pitch. It is teetering on the brink of something really special and it’s age suggests so much.

That is fantastic, the video for the song is excellent, I’m not so sure I would have been so drawn in unless I watched the video.

    ;))

    That is superb.

I got a new set of headphones today that I came home to. Audio-Technica ATH AD700 and Oh My goodness that sounds exquisite.

We have a young team that if the board can keep together we could really do something.

As we have a young fan base that parents are struggling to afford to send them to the games.

Lose the youth you lose the future.hh

  7. macjay1 for Neil Lennon

I remember Steven Gerrard announcing himself in the BPL by doing a right nasty challenge early doors. SG is a model pro in my mind and could have joined Chelsea but didn’t.

I’d be happy for Tom to get sent off in his first game (domestically obviously) if he is just sending out a message to not mess with him.

The footage you posted is pretty grim but we don’t know what has happened previously.

It’s a bruiser of a League is the SPL currently, this must be changed.

    Knew you’d like it amigo ! :)

The ole Swedes are no daft, eh? A long term friend of mines lurks here – she has a fab personality which is much loved by whoever she meets here, and she has a wardrobe of Celtic Tops gifted to her by oor fellow Tims :))) But she cannae sing ! :))) Although to be fair it sounds good when she sings YNWA :)))

  9. I the wee small hours of the morning

When the whole wide world is fast asleep

You lie awake and think about the Celts

And never ever contemplate defeat …….

  10. When the lonely Hearts have learned they’re lesson

They’d be Huns if only they they could wash

In the wee small hours of the morning

That’s the time we hump them most… Of all

I agree, I remember sitting with BSR and the thing that struck me most that day was his annoyance that there were so many empty seats.

Fill that Stadium. I would say we are cash ok now after years of establishment cheating so it is imperative to get the Stadium Full again.

The Celtic Support is sensational, it is talked about the World over, so it is time to ensure there are 60000 at every game, or as near to that figure as possible.

It is not all about the money, Celtic has to survive and I feel we have been playing the game with one hand tied behind our backs for the past 4 years or so.

Stay on this steady course (developing young promising players) and bring those ST prices down a lot. The demand is there for the CL so bump them up a bit from this season.

This is totally different dance music…..

    Njoi….

  12. None but the lonely Hearts can know their sadness

    Alone and parted

    Far from love and gladness

    Alone , and parted

    From joy and gladness

    None but the lonely Heart

    Can know his madness????

  13. Interstingly on music night.

Depeche Mode sent me a ‘just cant get enought ‘ on FB today.

Mostly it is the more avant gard tunes but today it was the crap DM tune which is now ours.

I think it is a sign

    Hail hAil

  14. Watching Cameron in parliament.

He has an annoying trait of turning to the side and addressing his own benches, rather than the opposition.

Ed seems lost in his argument and gives it all to the opposition.

I worry that the studied stage management is all that most folk see.

    They certainly don’t hear anything.

  15. Rascar,

Another mask on the same face,

much like the teleprinter president across the pond.

  16. Best tune I have not heard in ages is ‘story of the blues’by the Mighty Wah

I am going to get my old 45 out to play it

Anyone in Babbity tomorrow brave enough to sing it! I will fund all their drink!

  17. Rascal

They all have the same training for media, the same as we all learn to pee straight.

On our own we all splash a bit
