The man from Raith said Play by the rules

441

Turnbull Hutton, who resigned as Raith Rovers chairman in November, died last night after a short illness.  When Scottish Football League chairmen were presented with an Armageddon scenario in 2012 his voice of dissent was first to be heard.  Those at the top of Scottish football tried to convince SFL clubs it was in THEIR interests to grant newco Rangers access to the second tier of Scottish football.  Hutton saw through this and called-out the presentation by Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir, chief execs of the SFA, SPL and SFL respectfully, for what it was.

Craig Whyte bought Rangers in 2011.  Within months his team crashed out Europe and he had devised a plan to liquidate, phoenix with a newco and present the SPL with a fait accompli – give me a place in the top flight and I’ll save your league programme and commercial deals.

Once Duff and Phelps were installed as administrators Craig lost control.  Had he been able to force through a quick liquidation there is a very good chance the SPL would have voted to allow newco access to the top flight.  Newco would have been debt free and able to strengthen their team in 2012.

It would have destroyed Celtic, who had no choice but to resist.  As the weeks passed, one by one, SPL clubs said ‘No’.  By May the baton passed to the Scottish Football League, who would not only be asked to vote newco as a new member, which the rules permitted them to do, but to elevate this club to the Championship.

The cost of liquidation and becoming a phoenix newco was established by Turnbull Hutton.  The rules permitted the applicant club would ask to be voted into the bottom tier of the professional league structure.  Hutton insisted the rules be followed, nothing more.  For this, Scottish football is in his debt.

You have three days left to bid on the fabulous hospitality for four people one day at this summer’s Open Golf Championship at St Andrews, which takes place from 16-19 July.

The auction is in aid of the Celtic Quick News appeal to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.  Shuttle transport for the five minute journey to and from the golf course as needed, with beer, Gin and Whisky tastings throughout the day with the master distiller.

You also have the chance to create a unique CQN single malt whisky cask worth potentially £5000 for future CQN charities, and you will receive a bottle of this very special single malt whisky to commemorate the great day when it is bottled in several years.

Eden Mill is Scotland’s newest and most innovative distillery and brewery incorporated in February 2012!  Located just 2 miles from the famous Old Course itself it provides a perfect base for hospitality for yourself and 3 friends on a day of your choosing at the forthcoming open golf championship on July 16th to 19th.

But this is so much more than just a day’s hospitality at the home of golf.  Before taking to the course to watch, you will enjoy a breakfast roll or two and discuss your perfect single malt whisky with the master distiller.

Whilst you and your friends are enjoying the golf he will seek to surpass your favourite whisky by using the best barley to create the right wash and recommending the right type of barrels for our very own unique CQN 1/4 cask of single malt.  A cask which will mature and provide over £5000 of future funding for our charities in a few years’ time.

You will return to the distillery by shuttle bus for lunch and an optional beer tasting and then for afternoon tea with a tutored gin and whisky tasting with the owner capping off a memorable, unique and very special day for your group and for CQN.

My thanks to Eden Mill for their incredible support.  You can bid on the auction here.

    On Duff & Phelps-

    Clark, Whitehouse and Grier are due back in court later this year to face charges of fraud in connection with their conduct during the Orcs Administration and Liquidation (they`ve already attended preliminary court cases alongside Gary Withey of Collier Bristow);

Now that being the case you would think Duff & Phelps would have suspended them from duty on full pay pending the outcome of this case given that it relates to alleged criminal misconduct whilst working in the name of D&P.

But no, there they still are, on the Duff & Phelps website with glowing testimonials and touting for fresh business.

Something about this doesn`t sit quite right.

Correct. They done a dodgy deal with the assets post liquidation hence ongoing criminal case against both Whyte and D&P.

    Craigellachie 10.

D&P Attempting to sign Cousins for Rangers did seem ridiculous at the time.

However D&P were one of the five, in the five way agreement.

If they thought that the creditors would have to accept a tiny pence in the pound deal ( unlikely that HMRC would agree anyway) where it could be business as usual without the debt for Rangers ( apologies for the oxymoron).

    Or

The plan for Newco Phoenix playing in the SPL again unhindered by debt, save the token Football related debts/fines. They could pretty much expect to carry on Business as usual. D&P would have known how important UCL football was to the value of oldco/newco after restructuring.

The SPL fans’ revolt and Turnbull Hutton’s SFL stance put the fly in the ointment. Could you imagine the state of Scottish Football if the got away with it?

All views, respectfully expressed, are welcome on here. Don’t be put off expressing them.

Turnbull Hutton was a courageous man willing to stand up for what was (obviously) right when others could have bent to pressure. A great shame that he has died at quite a young age. RIP to him and may his family be comforted.

  6. My sincerest condolences to Mr Hutton’s family and friends.

He showed a degree of courage and integrity which has been sadly lacking in the leadership of Scottish football and even sadder to say in the leadership of our club!

As the club which bore the brunt of the old huns cheating – I find that our club’s response has been far from satisfactory

Today Paul suggests that we would have been nearly fatally impaired had Sir David Murray’s scam …. er Mr Craig Whyte’s scam been successful!

Yet our response has been consistently so low key that to most of the support it has been invisible

Without wishing to make too much of today’s tragic news nor impose on the grief of Mr Hutton’s family and friends – our club could make the simple statement that the would like to pay tribute to the integrity of the man at the time of RFC’s demise and the decision to allow the new club entry to the fourth tier of Scottish football.

May turnbull hutton rest in peace. One of the few in scottish football to say what was needed over the sevco sham in 2012.

Rovers two victories against sevco in the petrofac & scottish cups were a great reward for his strength of character and honesty in the wake of mccoist’s who are these people comments and for calling out the powers that be in scottish football about the sevco carry on.

  8. RIP Turnbull Hutton.

As a brave man of honesty and clarity who stood out against the bigoted establishment, you will be sorely missed by those who admire your social attitude and the truth you decided to tell.

Sincere condolences to your family and freinds.

Bobby murdoch, sorry for my late reply to your post on the last blog about charlie nick and delaney’s attire onthe nottingham trip.

Choccy may not have had charlie’s natural ability was overall a far better player for us.

  14. Much has been made of Turnbull Hutton standing up for the integrity of Scottish Football – men like him are few and far between.

IMO his type should be the benchmark for many of our smaller provincial clubs – he worked tirelessly for the good of the game and the revival of his beloved Raith Rovers.

He helped save Starks Park and with a Community Buyout saw the turnaround of the club’s fortunes; promotion, a cup win and a profitable set of accounts prior to stepping down as chairman.

A sad loss to his family, club and football in general – RIP!

  15. Our silence was deafening

‘But you stick your head above the parapet and suddenly you’re all over the bl**dy internet and it spiralled out of control. I became “Turnbull The Tim”, which I found quite amusing. But pro-Celtic – or anti-Rangers – had nothing to do with me taking the stand I did.

‘I got some charming personal emails.

‘But there were far more supportive emails than nasty ones. I tried to answer them all but it got too much. I stuck them in a “love” file and a “hate” file on my computer and I’ve still got them to this day.

‘Looking back, would I play it different if it started today? I don’t think I could and I don’t think I would.

‘You’ve got to stand up for what you believe in. The consequences of speaking your mind are beyond your control but I’d do it all again. Everything that’s happened since then suggests my view was the right one.’

Some things have to be said in life.

    Our club failed miserably.

  20. I was glad to see a couple of posters refer to Derbyshire Bhoy earlier, I have often thought about how he was getting on. Some posters who are seriously ill find solace in talking about it on-line others obviously prefer to deal with it privately.

I still think fondly of Miki67 who remained an unrepentant Fenian till the end, still giving the Huns stick to his final breath.

Derbyshire Bhoy did say his condition was terminal and stopped posting shortly after that, he obviously preferred to deal with it his way and we have to respect that.

However if he or any of his family or friends are lurking, it might be nice for them to know that he is not forgotten.

  21. bournesouprecipe on

During the summer of 2012, when Stewart Regan, the chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, and Neil Doncaster, who held the same post at what was then the Scottish Premier League, shamefully attempted to coerce clubs into accepting the re-animated Rangers in the top flight – or, at worst, the First Division – after the previous incarnation of the club had gone bust earlier that year, there were several club chairman who publicly rejected that particular piece of chicanery.

Chief among them was Raith Rovers’ Turnbull Hutton, who refused to believe Doncaster’s claims that half a dozen senior clubs would go to the wall unless the new entity was catapulted into the second tier.

“We are being bullied, railroaded and lied to,” he said. “We are being lied to by the Scottish FA and the SPL. We are being threatened – it is not football as I know it … it is corrupt.”

One of his fellow Rovers directors, Eric Drysdale, received death threats after being “outed” as a member of the tribunal – following Rangers manager Ally McCoist’s ’Who are these people?’ rant – which imposed a completely ineffective signing embargo on the Scottish Football League’s newest associate members.

The police then contacted Hutton to say that there was a “credible threat” to burn down Rovers’ ground, Stark’s Park. Needless to say, Hutton was opposed to Rangers beginning life anywhere other than the bottom tier.

Whyte didn’t lose control when D & P took charge. They were his people. Ex Deidco chairman Johnston stated that the only time he ever saw Whyte in a panic was when HMRC moved to appoint their choice of administrators and Craigyboy raced to the High Court to beat them and have D & P installed.

D & P an integral part of Whyte’s strategy IMO.

I was posting here from day one that the role of Duff and Phelps should have been the subject of a rigorous scrutiny.

In troubled times, we need people of integrity to step forward – often in circumstances that may be detrimental to their own well being and safety.

Standards in public life generally are rock bottom – its a sad state of affairs.

Scottish fitba is not important in the overall scheme of life, yet only three years ago it was a microcosm of everything that is wrong with society with cheating being rewarded while “good men” stayed silent.

Yet out of the murk, there emerged an unlikely hero in the shape of Turnbull Hutton. Kind of restores your hope that maybe the good guys can still win if someone has the balls to make a stand.
