The man from Raith said Play by the rules

441

Turnbull Hutton, who resigned as Raith Rovers chairman in November, died last night after a short illness.  When Scottish Football League chairmen were presented with an Armageddon scenario in 2012 his voice of dissent was first to be heard.  Those at the top of Scottish football tried to convince SFL clubs it was in THEIR interests to grant newco Rangers access to the second tier of Scottish football.  Hutton saw through this and called-out the presentation by Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir, chief execs of the SFA, SPL and SFL respectfully, for what it was.

Craig Whyte bought Rangers in 2011.  Within months his team crashed out Europe and he had devised a plan to liquidate, phoenix with a newco and present the SPL with a fait accompli – give me a place in the top flight and I’ll save your league programme and commercial deals.

Once Duff and Phelps were installed as administrators Craig lost control.  Had he been able to force through a quick liquidation there is a very good chance the SPL would have voted to allow newco access to the top flight.  Newco would have been debt free and able to strengthen their team in 2012.

It would have destroyed Celtic, who had no choice but to resist.  As the weeks passed, one by one, SPL clubs said ‘No’.  By May the baton passed to the Scottish Football League, who would not only be asked to vote newco as a new member, which the rules permitted them to do, but to elevate this club to the Championship.

The cost of liquidation and becoming a phoenix newco was established by Turnbull Hutton.  The rules permitted the applicant club would ask to be voted into the bottom tier of the professional league structure.  Hutton insisted the rules be followed, nothing more.  For this, Scottish football is in his debt.

You have three days left to bid on the fabulous hospitality for four people one day at this summer’s Open Golf Championship at St Andrews, which takes place from 16-19 July.

The auction is in aid of the Celtic Quick News appeal to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.  Shuttle transport for the five minute journey to and from the golf course as needed, with beer, Gin and Whisky tastings throughout the day with the master distiller.

You also have the chance to create a unique CQN single malt whisky cask worth potentially £5000 for future CQN charities, and you will receive a bottle of this very special single malt whisky to commemorate the great day when it is bottled in several years.

Eden Mill is Scotland’s newest and most innovative distillery and brewery incorporated in February 2012!  Located just 2 miles from the famous Old Course itself it provides a perfect base for hospitality for yourself and 3 friends on a day of your choosing at the forthcoming open golf championship on July 16th to 19th.

But this is so much more than just a day’s hospitality at the home of golf.  Before taking to the course to watch, you will enjoy a breakfast roll or two and discuss your perfect single malt whisky with the master distiller.

Whilst you and your friends are enjoying the golf he will seek to surpass your favourite whisky by using the best barley to create the right wash and recommending the right type of barrels for our very own unique CQN 1/4 cask of single malt.  A cask which will mature and provide over £5000 of future funding for our charities in a few years’ time.

You will return to the distillery by shuttle bus for lunch and an optional beer tasting and then for afternoon tea with a tutored gin and whisky tasting with the owner capping off a memorable, unique and very special day for your group and for CQN.

My thanks to Eden Mill for their incredible support.  You can bid on the auction here.

We both turned up in a pre proposed youthful ‘dress code’ we were instantly surrounded once again by a gaggle of sex starved old buffers, attempting to have their wicked way with us. I was all for calling the Rozzers at one point.

Luckily my ancestral chastity belt from the collection in the Ruglonian chambers was a safe move……………….unless of course you like living dangerously?

I tell you some of these old buffers can be mighty ‘persistent’ after a few Murphy’s.

We made it safely to the Gazebo via Bairds, Bar67, Kerry’s, The Heilin Jessie and a kerry oot, and low and behold the ole Tic won 5-0.

I’m going to ask him to make this a series as you know yourself, floating through the Gazebo pre match cracking gags about Hot Dog prices n stuff happens all the time. ;-)

A minutes applause at Celtic park on wednesday, organised or spontaneous would be appropriate

    Paul67,

Would it really have destroyed Celtic?

The rules certainly gave such permissions as you say, but did the rules really say ‘they’ could join the division they did?

    Weren’t rules broken/bended there?

They didn’t deserve the ‘help’ they got, therefore they shouldn’t be where they are… story of their ways.

I may be wrong but I’ll never forget that the Ibrox club have never (and may never) face their fate and be free from guilt.

Turnbull Hutton, this man was a breath of fresh air in Scottish footballing terms, it’s a real shame there is no more left.

The man was ready made to run the game on the corrupt 6th floor.

RIP Mr Hutton your voice will be forever remembered.

    A minute’s silence surely for Turnbull Hutton…………..

Are we that bereft of decency that we need to cover up and camouflage for the eejits who want to cause discomfiture to the majority. No, not for me, this faux attempt at respect by way of applause. Let us have a minute’s silence for the man and let the clowns and attention seekers embarrass themselves if they choose not to observe such……………

A fitting tribute to Turnbull Hutton would be the renaming of the North Stand at Hampden.

When the SFA Blazers sit in their comfy seats, nothing would be more condemning of them than to look across at the wording, The Turnbull Hutton Stand.

Fitting, because it was on the steps of Hampden that Mr. Hutton made his stand.

  14. TBM

Like you I’m not inclined to favour the minute’s applause idea. If the minute is to act as a way of showing respect on someone’s passing or an anniversary then silence should be the manner of respect.

  15. Paul, I endorse every word said by yourself and others on the stance of the brave Turnbull Hutton. But I still wait in vain for some pedant to beg you to change that word from “respectfully” to “respectively”.

Curse of the spellchecker it may be but it grates alongside those names mentioned in your first para. :-(

Football has always been a sentimental game, and also a conservative one, wedded to its rites and customs. However, the sight of Manchester United and Chelsea supporters engaged in a pre-match “minute’s applause” in memory of the late Sir Bobby Robson before the weekend’s Community Shield match at Wembley suggests that some things do change. Robson will also be honoured with a minute’s applause before the first round of Premier League matches this weekend. The minute’s silence, it seems, is dead. Long live the minute’s applause.

This hasn’t come completely out of the blue. The minute’s applause has long been the custom in Italy, although there it tends to start with silence and build to a peak level of applause from about halfway through. British observers had often commented that this seemed a warmer, more celebratory tribute. So applause began to creep in here, albeit not without resistance. Last Armistice Day some war veterans were upset that Scottish clubs were offered the choice between silence and applause to mark the occasion. Similarly, in January last year, Manchester United stood fast against urgings to honour the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash with applause, rather than old-fashioned silence, during the derby match against Manchester City.

Which offers a hint as to why the applause-mongers have increasingly held sway. The fact is, football has often struggled to keep its mouth shut, its minutes of silence breached by partisan yelp or parade-raining obscenity. The minute was already being cut to 30 seconds. So clapping appears to offer a deeply English solution. Never mind all the warm, celebratory, vaguely Mediterranean stuff. The minute’s applause is also a way of avoiding not just an uncomfortable silence, but a minor social embarrassment too.

Whatever the reason, it does seem a shame that we’ve come to this. A minute’s silence inside a packed and excitable stadium is still an unbearably potent memento mori. Applause can seem lukewarm and perhaps a little odd, even if, in Robson’s case at least, it does seem entirely appropriate.

  20. If the huns where as good at football as they are at running there mouths off they would be world beaters.

Coming 2nd dosent really matter your still a loser and they celebrate it like they’ve won something, 3rd would proberly be better for them as it gives them another home game not on the ST.

  21. Before 2012 I had not heard of Turnbull Hutton. Raith Rovers from Kirkcaldy, I’d been there a few times and remember that the Celtic end was right next to a railway and trains would hurtle by during the game .

Raith Rovers were responsible for one of my worst experiences as a Celtic supporter and until the name Turnbull Hutton cropped up my memories of Raith would have been painful, memories which if I could erase I would.

Now when I see the name Raith Rovers , I think of Turnbull Hutton and his spirit of fair play. He would not succumb to the cheats.

He would not give into the intimidation.

A year ago his beloved team beat Sevco in the Ramsdens cup final.

Turnbull Hutton, I salute u sir

There was great interest in the event, the fine weather helping to boost the crowds. I think Dublin 2016 should be a cracker and there will be lots to do, see and get involved in. Start saving folks!
