The most remarkable thing you’ll read about Celtic fans this year

Something remarkable starts today. A few hours ago, members of the Tyneside No. 1 Celtic Supporters’ Club, and others, started walking in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales. They plan to walk all the way to Celtic Park between now and 22 October.

The day they are scheduled to arrive at Paradise will be the first anniversary of the passing of Jonathan Thomas (above), a former member of the Tyneside CSC who died aged 30, after a battle with that most indiscriminate of illnesses.

Jonathan arrived in Newcastle 10 years ago from his native Wales, where he had been coached by a Celtic fan from Belfast. He joined the club and started making the pilgrimage north each home game to see Celtic.

While we all do the odd thing to mark the founding spirit of our club, Jonathan did far more than most. Alongside other Tyneside No. 1 CSC members, he walked from Newcastle to Celtic Park, then cycled from Swansea to the same destination, and completed the West Highland Way, all for Celtic charities.

Then he was taken from his family, friends and wife Sian, who he married a day before he lost his battle.

I don’t fancy walking from Merthyr Tydfil to Celtic Park, there are easier things to do in life, but when you learn what Jonathan did to raise money to help others, it seems like a reasonable undertaking in his name.

Sian, Iain McGovern (a good friend of mine), and the others will have left Merthyr already. They face an incredible journey, but two weeks from now they will walk up the Celtic Way and know they’ve lived up to the spirit of Jonathan, as well as our common 128-year heritage.

Money raised is going to the Celtic FC Foundation and Crohn’s & Colitis UK (despite what he did for our good causes, Jonathan also suffered from Colitis, a debilitating condition). This is a great Celtic supporters’ story. We’re so lucky to have people like this stand with us each week.  If you can help their efforts, here, please do so.

  2. Paul from your article it is not about the club… it is about the supporters. It is about the family.

    No despots…. no soul suckers.

Am i right in saying Celtic are flush… loads of money??? Is that correct?

Am I right in saying that for Celtic to pay the living wage it would cost the club 500,000 pounds of sterling???

Am I right in saying that Celtic, although they are quite flush, off the backs of the hard pressed supporters, continue to shaft the spirit of ‘An Gorta Mor’.

    My heart weeps.

Ian McGovern is one of the most humble, caring, compassionate and wonderful human beings I’ve ever met.

Then thank god passive aggressive wasn’t part of the brief prior to the charge of the light brigade…

  5. Paul67,

It’s nearly 6.30 pm in this part of the world. Just logged on for the first time in days.

Great to see the Celtic spirit is alive and well. God bless and take care of all those on their special walk.

It was not intentional mate but believe me… My simple mantra in life is to create a smile, whenever you can, make somebody smile.

Just a wee smile, on a wee ,or a big face, make it happen then I’ve (you’ve) earned my (your) right to be acclaimed a human being (without having to flaunt that I am of the Celtic Global Family).

My family make me proud…. so often, so fearless.

Ffs,I’ve got to travel to Swindon today. Nobody gives a f… about that,I don’t see any bliddy articles about it.

And btw, last time I tried it in July,I wish I had walked. Would have been bliddy quicker. My mates in Kilwinning have the right idea at that time of the year.

I’m really proud of how the people who frequent this site have been able to highlight a diverse range of causes, most of which we would have been casually oblivious to.

There’s a tale to be told about the generosity of the congregation brought together under the banner of CQN.

We certainly function well as a compassionate group, not so well as a collection of disparate opinions.

But,IMO,our backgrounds dictate that we must be both or neither.

I’ll settle for the good manifestly outweighing the not quite.

HH,guid Tims everywhere. Our hearts always win.

re the away ticket allocation review

i think the club should make fans wanting away tickets do the equivalent of what people on here do when they are looking for away tickets from other CQNers

make them write the most pathetic, sniveling begging correspondence to the club, and those which are the most cringe worthy and full of ridiculous self-entitlement get allocated the tickets

it should mean that a few people on here will have a head start on everyone else

Finally, it’s back to the Daily Record and today’s ‘exclusive’ news that:

“JOEY BARTON has spent the last 10 days in a BOOT camp in a Qatari desert in a desperate bid to salvage his Rangers career.

Record Sport revealed yesterday how the remorseful 34-year-old will return to the club’s training HQ on Monday morning for a make-or-break MEETING with manager Mark Warburton, in which he will fight the f’n lot of yees for his future after serving a month-long suspension.”

“Record Sport understands Barton has been training alone three times a day with DONAL TRUMP in temperatures tipping 100 degrees as he attempts to get back into some kind of shape ahead of his return to AUCHINLOCH.

The former Manchester City midfielder is understood to have paid for the trip with PROVI CHEQUES – to the world-renowned Aspire Academy – stolen for him by his SCOUSE mates as part of a determined effort to win back Warburton’s truss.

Barton hopes to finally bury the hatchet IN his boss on Monday by proving he is sincerely sorry for the training-ground flashpoint as well as mentally insane to return to the first-team squad.”

This is impressive and respectful BULL SHIT which will surely delight The Warbmeister and see Barton continue to pick up his sizeable paypacket for many months to come. But the highlight of the Record’s account of the Liverpudlian’s travels was its opening line:

“He secretly left his family behind in Scotland”

Secretly?! What did he do? Tell them he was popping out for a pint of milk o̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶p̶u̶t̶ ̶a̶ ̶b̶e̶t̶ ̶o̶n̶ and then slipped away to Qatar for ten days, hoping his nearest and dearest coudn’t give 2 FCUKS where ha was.

Or perhaps the Record has unwittingly revealed Barton’s double life as a secret agent? Overrated 34-year old midfielder by day, Security man at TESCO by night?

Whatever the truth, his secret activities can’t possibly be as hard to fathom as the secret of the MSM’s endless production of Sevco pish. That’s a very SPECIAL form of alchemy in reverse…
