The most remarkable thing you’ll read about Celtic fans this year

jonathan-thomas
Something remarkable starts today. A few hours ago, members of the Tyneside No. 1 Celtic Supporters’ Club, and others, started walking in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales. They plan to walk all the way to Celtic Park between now and 22 October.

The day they are scheduled to arrive at Paradise will be the first anniversary of the passing of Jonathan Thomas (above), a former member of the Tyneside CSC who died aged 30, after a battle with that most indiscriminate of illnesses.

Jonathan arrived in Newcastle 10 years ago from his native Wales, where he had been coached by a Celtic fan from Belfast. He joined the club and started making the pilgrimage north each home game to see Celtic.

While we all do the odd thing to mark the founding spirit of our club, Jonathan did far more than most. Alongside other Tyneside No. 1 CSC members, he walked from Newcastle to Celtic Park, then cycled from Swansea to the same destination, and completed the West Highland Way, all for Celtic charities.

Then he was taken from his family, friends and wife Sian, who he married a day before he lost his battle.

I don’t fancy walking from Merthyr Tydfil to Celtic Park, there are easier things to do in life, but when you learn what Jonathan did to raise money to help others, it seems like a reasonable undertaking in his name.

Sian, Iain McGovern (a good friend of mine), and the others will have left Merthyr already. They face an incredible journey, but two weeks from now they will walk up the Celtic Way and know they’ve lived up to the spirit of Jonathan, as well as our common 128-year heritage.

Money raised is going to the Celtic FC Foundation and Crohn’s & Colitis UK (despite what he did for our good causes, Jonathan also suffered from Colitis, a debilitating condition). This is a great Celtic supporters’ story. We’re so lucky to have people like this stand with us each week.  If you can help their efforts, here, please do so.

  1. BHOYJOEBELFAST,

    Ya wee rascal !

I immediately thought of Quizball, as I remember it well.

However, I don’t remember Big Billy being part of the team, that is what threw me off ??

Jim Craig and John Cairney were our match winners, clever guys.

Trust me everybody reads your posts !

I don’t care much for international football and I love wgs so am a bit conflicted, Gordon had 4 of our players who just drew with Etihaad FC and started 0, sometimes our great wee country gets what it deserves :-)

HT in the times we live anybody putting in an event attracting thousands of people are probably duty bound to provide the authorities with personal details, just a guess

The body language of the Scottish Coaches was apalling… Mark McGhee… Hands in pockets… was actually rolling his eyes when WGS was talking to him.

    ————————————————

We were talking about that in the pub. I don’t know what he was thinking inside, but his demeanour shouted out that he couldn’t give a toss or was simply fed up.

The performance of the team was unacceptable and Mark McGhee’s demeanour was equally unacceptable.

    IMO of course.

  4. I demand a replay .

Here’s another quick question for all,

In season 1966/67 Celtic won all before them.

As such it is widely claimed that the Celts won 5 trophies ?

Not so, as the Celts won another football trophy that is sung about in a song from the day.

What was the 6th Trophy ?

    HH

PS. It wasn’t the Quizball Trophy.

We are grateful to a concerned reader from port Glasgow who wishes to correct yesterdays story regarding a handsome hun being spotted in Burtons with the comment no no there is not one.

  6. I have a very serious question go ask.

Do any of the cqnrs have experience in LEGAL matters relating to Civil Law, and possibly Criminal Law ?

I wish to sue a Glasgow solicitor and I have already been through the crooked Law Society who allowed this crook off the hook.

I need advice and/or possible representation. Other Glasgow solicitors won’t take on one if their own, that’s why I’m having problems getting legal advice.

The Govan Law centre etc, are no good either.

Any advice would be very much appreciated asap. I would if course be happy to meet with anyone to discuss matters asap in Glasgow .

  7. BIG JIMMY

Did they get a cup for defeating Real Madrid??

They should have got a trophy for the 4-1 hammering of Man U (complete with Denis Law ,Best, Charlton, Styles and Crerand?.

The BBC 5 a side tourney which was o a weds night was also won that year.

  9. There seems to be a black hole in Celtic Park. I was wondering this morning where have Eoghan O’ Connell, Boyata, Ciftci, Henderson,Christie, G.M.S. Kris, Izzy, Gamboa & Efe disappeared to.

Could we not organise a friendly & play them all just to reassure us that they are all alive & well.

All they need is a Keeper and we have four of them so that should not be a problem.

  10. Corky

A few of them can remain in the black hole, thanks very much. Must be £100k a week in wages amongst that lot.

  11. Gerryfaethebrig on

Just heading out, young Eoghan was prominent until Toure arrived then Erik & Jozo now fit, so 3 better centre halves now available, hope the bhoy has a big future with us and hopefully learning every day beside Kolo

One of my mates (not interested in football at all) has been working in your old pre-match boozer for years, we never talk about football and never talk about work it was my sister who mentioned the pub yesterday……it was uncanny that you have mentioned it the last couple of weeks to me

  12. Big Jimmy 10.35am

Jimmy unfortunately I’m not an expert but was thinking that it may be worth considering employing the services of one of the many company’s out there who will consider filing a malpractice claim on your behalf?

Generally it’ll be on a no win no fee basis.

Whilst other law firms may be reluctant to go after each other, there are many of these compensation type companies who won’t hesitate if they think you have a case.

  13. The guys in the Black Hole would beat most Scottish teams. Gamboa & Izzy as full backs, Boyata & O’Connell Centre Halves. Efe defensive midfielder behind, Henderson, Christie & GMS, Kris playing in the “hole” sic behind Ciftci.

  14. Joey Barton suspension extended by one week. Their only objective appears to be to sack him without having to pay up. I think the lawyers will need to be paid up front.

  15. Bhoyjoebelfast on

That was MM being “cute” ;))

Oh yeah! Nonchalantly masterminding the spell binding display from the sidelines.

    GREENPINATA @ 10:25 AM,

Totally agree… this was a must win game… I’m sure Mark had better things to be doing on a dank, mid October Saturday night, but some folk had paid good money to watch that display.

Just shows how lucky we are to have BR… thought when they came on the Celtic bhoys showed focus, pace and presence that came straight out of the Current Celtic Park Mode.

  20. Celtic played friendly against Real Madrid for the Blue and White Challenge Trophy at Celtic Park in 1962, losing 3-1. Game was in aid of a Jewish charity – the Jewish National Fund for the rehabilitation of refugees from north Africa.

  21. Aye, they’ll try to smear Big McGhee’s cuteness before any of them will have the cojones to admit that, all WGS is is a puppet-manager who’s aboot tae be fun oot – again!

  23. Any update on the love fest going on at Celtic Park, between the Celtic PLC and the CT malcontents,? seems the malcontents have taken off they’re combat jackets and CND badges, tossed out they’re Bob Dylan CDs? are the CT ground troops (the GB) in on this one or have they been binned by the CT?

One only wonders what Jeanette’s lead canvaser and lackie (HT) will be peddling on CQN today? Now there’s about as much chance of this affair lasting as there is of getting a straight answer on res12.

My only concern is that the CQN does not become a PR tool for malcontents and takes away the good from this blog and becomes a political bull horn for them?

Anyway, watch this space, in the mean time.

  24. The answer t.o my question of what was the 6th Football Trophy that the Celts won in 66/67, was courtesy of the 1-0 win against Real Madrid in Di Stephanie testimonial.

The trophy following that famous win ( Buzzbomb goal).

In the song / vinyl record that I posted about a few weeks ago by Matt McGinn which was ” The Bhoys from Lisbon”, in the chorus Matt sings,

“We’re the Bhoys who shook up Lisbon,

We showed Inter some of our tricks,

    In the year of ’67,

    SURE OF TROPHY NUMBER SIX”.

I think BAMBOO was the cqnr who was on the right road with his answer.

I would like to put up the YouTube link for this great song, but I can’t due to tech problems with this Tablet !

Hun Media is quite a read this now, and the comparisons with CQN are quite stark.

Topic – Andy muirhead Scotzine. Someone who had his own opinion about the game, and annoyed celtic fans as well as huns at times. But hey, he had a reasonable stance and logical opinions.

Hun Media has printed his address, phone number, pictures of his wedding day, and some are hoping to read his obituary. They love it that intimidation has forced him to close Scotzine down.

Topic – Lee Wallace being booed by Scotlabd fans. OP raging about it after his mate told him. Guy posts he was at the game and there was no booing, in fact there were some cheers. Five pages follow of calling this guy a ‘tarrier’

“I hope England destroy them on and OFF the park in November..”

“I was at the match supporting Lithuania..”

“Just f*** off you national (scotland fans) c**** and stay out of Ibrox”

What can you say? I know and work with sevco fans, decent people to a man. No protestant supremacy fantasies or bigotry whatsoever. This fascist element in their support are not only their foundation, but will also be their undoing. No educated reasonable person will spend a life supporting them before succumbing to rationality and thinking..’what am i doing here amongst there cretins?’ It stunts them in a global world.

This is partly the reason why I was so disappointed with the blow up dolls and KAH nonsense; to stoop to their level is pathetic. It’s not a squirrel or a laugh, it’s a very bad thing which has neutrals supporting OBF as they can’t distinguish between degrees of nuttery on both sides, unlike us.

I know Paul doesn’t support Strict Liability as a few nutters can cause a huge club problems, but I don’t see any other way. The clubs/company are being used as a vehicle for extremism by extremists, and at times it’s very ugly and off-putting. If we as a society (call it scotland if you wish) want to move forward into a better place, football, the premier sporting pursuit of our society, needs to clean up.

I can just hear words like ‘sanitise’ in the post, as if it’s a negative term. Here is a definition:

“To make more acceptable by removing unpleasant or offensive features”

Personally, even as a republican, (and scot nat/socialist/europhile/communist/Corbynista/ 5 year plan Dinamo tractor/environmentalist tree hugger) the power of a positive celtic chant outweighs a rebel song 100 to 1. I certainly don’t want to listen to anti catholic/child abuse/ violence endorsing chanting.

The landscape is getting worse IMO. The anonymity of the internet is allowing nutters to express extremism which the poorly educated take as fact. It’s only a matter of time before someone high profile gets murdered by a maniac (Any irish catholic celtic employee, maybe even a ‘rangers hater’ like an SNP candidate). We have to recognize this

  26. TWISTSANDTURNS,

Cheers for that legal Link mate, I have sent them details in their online form and I am now waiting for a callback ?

My only real concern is that they are an English firm who may not consider any claims from Scotland ? Cheers anyway.

One other thing, I found the name of the solicitors that you provided very ironic ?

    ” Wright Hassell” ?????

    HH

  27. COOLMORE,

I take your point mate, but I was referring to football matters on the field if p!ay and not accolades off the pitch ?

I am fully aware of the BBC award, however I am sure that you will agree that the Celts didn’t play against a BBC 1X to win that accolade ? Lol.

Another instance is that if a Celtic player had won the player if the year in Scotland for 66/67, ( I can’t remember if one did right now at this precise moment), then I would not have included that accolade either ?

Also, the SIXTH Trophy that I refer to was immortalised in song by the late great Matt McGinn.
