The most remarkable thing you’ll read about Celtic fans this year

Something remarkable starts today. A few hours ago, members of the Tyneside No. 1 Celtic Supporters’ Club, and others, started walking in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales. They plan to walk all the way to Celtic Park between now and 22 October.

The day they are scheduled to arrive at Paradise will be the first anniversary of the passing of Jonathan Thomas (above), a former member of the Tyneside CSC who died aged 30, after a battle with that most indiscriminate of illnesses.

Jonathan arrived in Newcastle 10 years ago from his native Wales, where he had been coached by a Celtic fan from Belfast. He joined the club and started making the pilgrimage north each home game to see Celtic.

While we all do the odd thing to mark the founding spirit of our club, Jonathan did far more than most. Alongside other Tyneside No. 1 CSC members, he walked from Newcastle to Celtic Park, then cycled from Swansea to the same destination, and completed the West Highland Way, all for Celtic charities.

Then he was taken from his family, friends and wife Sian, who he married a day before he lost his battle.

I don’t fancy walking from Merthyr Tydfil to Celtic Park, there are easier things to do in life, but when you learn what Jonathan did to raise money to help others, it seems like a reasonable undertaking in his name.

Sian, Iain McGovern (a good friend of mine), and the others will have left Merthyr already. They face an incredible journey, but two weeks from now they will walk up the Celtic Way and know they’ve lived up to the spirit of Jonathan, as well as our common 128-year heritage.

Money raised is going to the Celtic FC Foundation and Crohn’s & Colitis UK (despite what he did for our good causes, Jonathan also suffered from Colitis, a debilitating condition). This is a great Celtic supporters’ story. We’re so lucky to have people like this stand with us each week.  If you can help their efforts, here, please do so.

Neganon annoys me with any positivity but his comments are usually pretty accurate.

His overall narrative is that the world is bad, pretty safe point of view. Push him on details and he struggles. He didn’t know what a CEO did, he constantly misused Moneyball when a simple google would save him the embarrassment and let’s not start on his use of Racist

  2. International football is rubbish for having a wee bet.Betfair were doing a “special”.6/4 that the ITV commentators would mention Sam Allardyce’s name after kick off.I thought to myself,am having a wee 10er on that..50 seconds into the game Glenn Hoddle duly obliges..Thank you Glen.

I’m not sure they are correct; they err just on the right side or reasonable and accurate but I don’t think he ever fully commits himself.

I’m not sure he is committed to Celtic and may be an interloper; Mags and KEVJ are lacking in joy over Celtic, but I believe they KTF; not sure Neganon does.

Mags why do you feel the need as a male to,post on a foot football site, ACGR, Mags if you are kicking with the left foot foot it’s ok with us

  5. I believe in the right of every Celtic supporter to disagree with each other which we do on a regular occurrence however I also believe that the very least we should do is respect one an other. To disrespect one of us is to disrespect us all. Hh

Gerry, there is in content and I do see it. I think you are a very decent man, as I am sure Mags is (at weekends anyway) but it’s a battle that you are both entrenched in and neither will win.

You have a lot of good stuff to offer, as does Mags, so IMHO you should both let it go and concentrate on the positive you both bring to CQN.

I do believe, in actual fact, that over a pint or 10 you’d probably both get on famously!

I’d agree with most of your post but they don’t address the fundamental issue. Most of what he posts is in fact accurate.

Ask. MMC tomorrow about the passing over of information by Celtic to the polis.

I’m not; AFAIK (though I will be corrected if someone knows better) the agreement is the clubs give Police Scotland open access to CCTV for instance. Therefore it’s not a quantum leap for Neganon to allege that Celtic collude with Police Scotland.

Other info that Police Scotland require could be accessed with a court order (I think) under OBAF.

  19. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

I don’t fully understand why some people get so exercised over the Scotland, or any National team, for that matter.

Celtic players represent Celtic. Hearts players, Hearts, etc.

The Scotland team merely represent the SFA, the Irish team, the FAI, etc.

Not the nation , nor everyone in it.

In no way, shape or form do the SFA represent me or anything that I ever felt when I lived in Scotland.

If logic says that we should support the national team because they are Scottish, then the same logic says we must support every Scottish club against foreign opposition.

    Doesn’t work, does it?

I get what you are saying but one of my guilty pleasures is war movies; I have developed this due to watching these types of movies with my son who has been in those combat zones.

They are never pretty, but neither are the stories he and his mates regale me with when I visit him and we go for some beers!
