The Motor Neurone fight 6 years after Jinky

824

Last month we heard from one of our community, RalphWaldoEllison (John), whose adult son, Tony Conway, has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the same strain of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) that claimed Jimmy Johnstone almost six years ago.

Tony, John and their families now live in the United States, but they, along with Tony’s brother Martin, are travelling to Scotland this weekend to watch Celtic play Dundee United.  They will be here for a total of around 48 hours but I will get a chance to meet them and they are going to the game with Jinky’s son, James Johnstone.

I spoke to James last month and he relayed Jinky’s strong views on research into MND.  The fight against this disease will be won one day but there is a great deal of research and political effort required before then.  Tony has committed himself to this end.

This morning James Johnstone told me: “My Dad was my hero and I took great pride in the way he fought this horrible disease, it’s great to see the same attitude in Tony.  I know how much my Dad loved the Celtic fans and his answer to this would be to help get a cure for MND.  Hail, hail.”

I encourage you to visit Tony’s blog dontshrink.com, learn about the condition and leave him a message of support.  The Celtic Movement began by putting food in front of hungry children 124 years ago and it remains one of the most able forces for good in the land. We can pick up this challenge.

  1. I see the Steven Fletcher myth from Willo Window is rearing its head again.

This so-called prolific league guaranteeing forward transferred to Burnley (no bigger club bid) in August 2009 where he scored 8 times in 35 league matches for them. It took him until October of that year to open his account and his team were relegated. He has since scored 18 goals in 43 for Wolves, a better strike rate but achieved as a more mature and battle hardened player. He is not now showing the form of January 09 where his striking prowess was as bad as our own non-scorers at the time.

May I remind people again that Steven Fletcher DID play at Easter Road when we surrendered our 4iar ambitions with 2 games to go, having stormed back to lead the division earlier that month. Steven Fletcher never came near to threatening a goal that day. There is no reason to believe that Steven Fletcher would have guaranteed anything that day any more than would the other failing strikers we had at the time.

P.S. Anyone have news about Tiny Tim who has been missing from these parts for a while? We need him around to warn against complacency re Hun’s demise.

PPS I posted last night that the divorce proceedings were a scam to land Craig with all the Ibrox liabilities whilst the pristine and directorially eligible, Mrs. Whyte gets to own Rangers as an alimony payment. I thought if I posted this scurrilous rumour again, the Record might be fooled into repeating it.

Many thanks mate. Let the goods tim(e)s roll.

  3. Apologies if raised and answered before.

The circumstances which saw rangers granted a Euro licence for THIS season still intrigue me.

I am particularly interested in WHEN rangers received the “wee” tax bill (£2.8m?)

I know whyte mentioned it as having come to his attention during due diligence, but does anyone have a handle on when it was issued or when it was received by rangers?

I see this as a critical element in the “should they have been granted a licence?” debate.

If the “wee” tax bill was received before 31st March 2011 then, given it was at the time uncontested, should this not have resulted in the Euro licence being withheld?

  4. I see that Alistair McCoist is interested in Javi Guerra.

From the looks of him, he is even more interested in Greggs.

    According to the BBC:

The 29-year-old has scored 32 goals in 52 games for the Spanish Second Division club, who could be forced to sell the forward because of ongoing financial problems.

I can think of a couple of problems with the idea of him signing for Skint FC. (thumbsup)

Hi Tom, I am just looking at the consolidated balance sheet for 2011. Bear in mind net debt is subjective, there are many variations on a theme as to how this can be calculated. From what I can see the figure is negligible as it is more than covered by the assets.

Net bank debt referred to of £530k comes from the difference between our loan at the bank (currently £11.3m) and the cash we have in the bank (currently £10.8m). This is the figure always used as if we were forced to pay back the loan immediately, we could do so out of our savings. This level of debt is very manageable.

Apparently, a la Macauley Culkins character in Richie Rich who had a MacDonalds in his mansion, the bold Sooper Alloy has his very own branch of calorific baked goods maker, Greggs, in the garage of his stately pile. The outlet is open 24/7 in order to keep the ravenous chortling funster supplied with his favourite between meals snack of 3 steak bakes in a 2 foot baguette washed down with a blended cheese n onion pastie milkshake. Pudding is the rest of the shop mashed up in a big wheelie bin.

Out of interest regards the Hun tax case. If this has cropped up previously in the RTC blog detail, apologies, but I’d never encountered it before:

    I heard from a well-informed source who has moved in the establishment financial circles for years, that aside from the contentious amounts/methods/liabilities, etc, etc – which can be argued to and fro – the ‘taxman’ holds starkly damning evidence;

Apparently when the Hun set up the offshore ‘loan’ facilities back in the day, some of the new foreign singings and their agents were not totally comprehending of this concept of ‘loaning’ a player his wages and never having it paid back.

Therefore, to assure their new superstars, the Huns spelled it out in layman’s terms in missives to the players and their legal/accountancy teams, simplified to the extent of basically telling them in black and white that it was a ‘legal’ scam as a way of getting around PAYE, and that they, the players, would never face any repercussions.

In doing so, the Hun admitted liability, PAYE, stating in black and white they knew FULL well the implications and deviousness of such a scheme.

According to what I was told, some of these actual letters have found their way into the Revenue and Custom’s hands. In Cluedo, what’s known as the ‘murder weapon’; ‘Mrs.Whyte’ did it in the boardroom with the typewriter.

They’ll need an Edinburgh jury to get out of this one.

    Anyway, back to work.

rangers received the tax bill. If he has to give half of rangers to his ex then rangers still owe the tax. Am I missing something?
