The truth is always welcome

Last night’s result was both disappointing and embarrassing.  Considering that Bodo/Glimt were preseason and scored their third long after the affects of cramp and exhaustion took hold, it was even humiliating.  Only a remarkable turnaround will see Celtic remain in the Uefa Conference League, an outcome that would be very harsh on the comparatively underpaid and over-performing Norwegians.

When I looked at the teams left in the competition earlier this week, only Leicester and Marseille seemed out of reach.  This was a chance, I thought, to go deep into a European competition – perhaps our last and easiest chance for some time, as we hoped to compete on higher ground in the years to come.

We have both seen enough of Celtic in Europe, though, to hedge our bets.  On Wednesday, I wrote, “You and I are also full of confidence right now.  What we are missing is a test against non-Scottish opposition.  Drubbing a limp Newco gave us hope that we are watching something special.  Tomorrow night will give an indication as to whether that hope is valid.”  We have our answer.

Welcome the truth instead of living deluded.  It should fortify us for the challenges ahead, better to know, than to rock up at Easter Road next week with an unbalanced and porous midfield.  Or to think that the world has been put to right during two transfer windows.

Cameron Carter-Vickers was head and shoulders above everyone on the field.  He operated at a level Bodo/Glimt were unable to reach.  Similarly, Carl Starfelt and Joe Hart did not put a foot wrong.  Our full backs and wingers on both sides were bossed out of the contest.

Callum McGregor has seen this movie before and covered every inch of the park in a vain attempt to prevent a sequel.  Did anyone think Tom Rogic and Matt O’Riley would be an effective midfield pairing?  Apart from Ange, of course.  Daizen Maeda scored with a peach of a header but spent much of the game isolated.  I hope Reo Hatate was carrying an impediment that made his exclusion from the starting line-up necessary.  Any other reason would be inexplicable.

And for the record, Ange, no, we did not control the game.  That ability lay with the men in yellow, who played exactly how they wanted.

Who is his critical friend? Who suggests a different approach? Does he have a trusted lieutenant within the backroom team?

He has performed extremely well so far. He needs support.

  2. Bollingoli a misfit ,don’t think so ,in my opinion he is the best left back at the club,That Bhoy has been the scapegoat for the going on a 3day trip to Spain ,also I was at the Livingston game lost 1/0 I thought he had a good game ,but he has never featured again ,but back to Lennon if your face doesn’t fit ,then look no further what Ange is doing to Bolingoli.

I don’t think it was a face fit situation

It was a situation where boli ignored uk law

It was a situation where boli ignored Scottish law

    All during a pandemic.

He remains at our club only due to the modern complexities of contract law.

A diff time he would have been chased.

  4. I wouldn’t get too uptight about what managers come out with in the press that is a smokescreen from start to finish

Start of the season my usual rule of thumb 18 months to turn round the ship from the wreckage do to speak still applies

We are ahead of target , full pelt each game from now on and see where that takes us …..

Still maintain we didn’t play well and it wasn’t all down to the Norwegians

  5. Uncle Jimmy,

I have been saying that for a while now. I think Ange has done a magnificent job up to now. I feel he will bring in his own trusted lieutenant to complement the present team.

    Everyone needs a confidant.

    Onwards and upwards.

Same as NFL in his second term, he doesn’t have one.

Which is fine when things are going well, but not so fine when things aren’t going well.

  10. I’m out of town and didn’t make the match on Wednesday. Sounded like some booing at the end. Absolutely pathetic. Fans are meant to support the team. Best supporters in the world, my arse.

    I was there on Wednesday.

    Never heard any booing mate

Players applauded for their effort as per usual.

Most around me resigned to the defeat by a better team on the night.

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Afternoon all,

From a 3 page read back to last night …

… I get quite a strong sense of the hangover from last season’s monumental organisational collapse.

As a result, after a single bad result a bit of edginess & insecurity surfaces?

Last season was terrible and, in terms of how far we fell as a club (not just as a team), pretty much without precedent.

I suspect it has left many of us frazzled.

    Perspective needed.

We’re not “there” yet – Ange is at pains to point this out repeatedly.

    How could we be?

Our starting position was unbelievably low.

Ange’s tenure is EIGHT MONTHS old.

(Not even the duration of a full term pregnancy)

Circumstances have allowed him to have more control than would probably be available to a new manager under “normal” circumstances.

And he has taken advantage of that to stabilise and improve us.

    Perspective needed.

Do I want success in Europe? Yes

Do I expect it this year? No

In August, did I think we’d be in Europe post-Christmas? No

    Are we? Yes

Is the Bodo/Glimt “project” (irrespective of the bleedin’ size of the town ! ) more mature and further along its journey than ours? Yes

As a result, are results like Thursday’s possible? Yes

    Perspective is needed.

Did anyone on here think (not hope, pray, believe, imagine), THINK …

… We’d be top of the league in February?

    Perspective is needed.

Particularly in a internet driven society which specialises in the superlatives with 30 minute shelf lives.

    Ange isn’t Jock.

    Ange isn’t a dud.

He’s a smart guy with lots of life experience who, judging by his track record, is a decent manager.

    I’m glad he is ours.

    Hail hail

    Keep The Faith.

  14. I still can’t quite believe the position we are in, so soon after Ange’s appointment…………

we are way, way ahead of anything I had hoped for.

As a life-long supporte, Celtic have my support largely without equivocation but I haven’t looked forward to us playing so much in such a long time.

It’s Good To Be a Tim (mate)

  15. St Stivs. Thanks for the Greenock Lisbon photo. Apart from the great Charles Patrick Tully, two of the men I sat beside during the game are in the photo, the late John Duggan and the late Tommy Hughes . Oh, and I am in the photo also. Guess who?

  17. Jim Goodwin has been appointed Aberdeen manager on a two-and-a-half-year contract after he left St Mirren.

The Dons say the 40-year-old will take charge of the team for Saturday’s league match at Motherwell, which has passed a pitch inspection.

Lee Sharp also joins Aberdeen from St Mirren as assistant to Goodwin, who had been Buddies boss since June 2019.

“I am hugely honoured to have been offered the role of manager at this great football club,” said Goodwin.

“The opportunity to work at one of the biggest clubs in the country is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I can guarantee everyone connected to Aberdeen FC that I will give my all on a daily basis to ensure the club has the success it so richly craves and deserves.”

  18. Wake up call for all incl fans. We need to rally behind Ange and the team more than ever as there is a league to be won.

In every walk of life every day is a school day —- Ange will discuss and listen maybe even with his wife. A problem shared is a problem halved and always brings fresh perspective from whatever source.

Focus on Dundee and 3 points !!!

  19. THE ISSUE

What does Thursday say about the club – where we are – what are our realistic prospects?

    THE EVIDENCE

No question that Ange has lifted us ‘off the floor’ domestically, but not without a few setbacks which were sore at the time. We still have performance lapses that worry, but we’re top of the league at the moment despite. Thursday was a big ‘reality check’ from the third-tier in Europe. Was it really so unexpected? Some on here & elsewhere don’t do reality…..on anything!

    THE CONTEXT

It has to be remembered that Bodo are Norwegian champions – Scottish clubs have took ‘many a doing’ from Scandinavian teams over the years….it’s not unexpected – except by those who ‘don’t do reality’.

    A PERSPECTIVE

Gordon Strachan had a nightmare against Atrmedia, however he bounced-back with CL qualification & progress out of the Group Stage. Neil had Utrech..etc but also great nights in the CL. Brendan had a ‘blip’ against Red Imps, but thereafter took us to CL groups twice. We are ‘work in progress, nothing more, nothing less, at the moment. Ange has much still to prove – we’re a long way from the finished article.

So we have the ISSUE – the EVIDENCE considered – the CONTEXT recognised & a PERSPECTIVE arrived at…..I submit!

    REALITY CHECK

Finally, the GB banner on Ange was as ‘surreal’ as the one they did about Leigh Griffiths. The former is/was badly timed – the end of the season with the title ‘in the bag’ would be the right-time to unfurl. The latter just showed how out of touch these people were at the time. They think they’re the conscience of the Celtic support, but in fact they are self-centered virtue-signallers who do as they please, cost the club a fortune and damage its reputation.

As I said: some ‘don’t do reality’.

That’s why most managers have their own assistants, whose first allegiance is to them, not a board of directors.

  21. Good on Jim Goodwin for getting the sheep gig.

    Thoroughly deserved.

  22. Lucky Cody – Soot on we need to start the game at a high tempo and dictate the pace/tempo and we will trounce Dundee.

  23. someone is late with their Dissertation,

they should get one of the finely educated green brigaders to help them with it.

  24. Having your own assistant is a concern for the fans who invent grievances.

If Ange wanted one, he would have got one. He is in a very powerful position for any negotiations within the club.

Not only has he never said anything himself about needing this aid; he has flatly rejected the notion when concerns were put to him.

Let Ange raise his own grievances- thay are probably very different ones than we imagine.
