The truth is always welcome

540

Last night’s result was both disappointing and embarrassing.  Considering that Bodo/Glimt were preseason and scored their third long after the affects of cramp and exhaustion took hold, it was even humiliating.  Only a remarkable turnaround will see Celtic remain in the Uefa Conference League, an outcome that would be very harsh on the comparatively underpaid and over-performing Norwegians.

When I looked at the teams left in the competition earlier this week, only Leicester and Marseille seemed out of reach.  This was a chance, I thought, to go deep into a European competition – perhaps our last and easiest chance for some time, as we hoped to compete on higher ground in the years to come.

We have both seen enough of Celtic in Europe, though, to hedge our bets.  On Wednesday, I wrote, “You and I are also full of confidence right now.  What we are missing is a test against non-Scottish opposition.  Drubbing a limp Newco gave us hope that we are watching something special.  Tomorrow night will give an indication as to whether that hope is valid.”  We have our answer.

Welcome the truth instead of living deluded.  It should fortify us for the challenges ahead, better to know, than to rock up at Easter Road next week with an unbalanced and porous midfield.  Or to think that the world has been put to right during two transfer windows.

Cameron Carter-Vickers was head and shoulders above everyone on the field.  He operated at a level Bodo/Glimt were unable to reach.  Similarly, Carl Starfelt and Joe Hart did not put a foot wrong.  Our full backs and wingers on both sides were bossed out of the contest.

Callum McGregor has seen this movie before and covered every inch of the park in a vain attempt to prevent a sequel.  Did anyone think Tom Rogic and Matt O’Riley would be an effective midfield pairing?  Apart from Ange, of course.  Daizen Maeda scored with a peach of a header but spent much of the game isolated.  I hope Reo Hatate was carrying an impediment that made his exclusion from the starting line-up necessary.  Any other reason would be inexplicable.

And for the record, Ange, no, we did not control the game.  That ability lay with the men in yellow, who played exactly how they wanted.

  4. Gabby Hayes

    ————-

Fascinating story, but can you trust wiki.

George Francis “Gabby” Hayes (May 7, 1885 – February 9, 1969) was an American actor. He began as something of a leading man and a character player, but he was best known for his numerous appearances in B-Western film series as the bewhiskered, cantankerous, woman-hating, but ever-loyal and brave comic sidekick of the cowboy stars Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers.

After his move to Los Angeles, according to later interviews, Hayes had a chance meeting with the producer Trem Carr (originally Tremlet C. Carr), who liked his look and gave him 30 roles over the next six years. In his early career, Hayes was cast in a variety of roles, including villains, and occasionally played two roles in a single film. He found a niche in the growing genre of Western films, many of which were series with recurring characters.

Hayes, in real life an intelligent, well-groomed and articulate man, was often cast as a grizzled codger who uttered phrases such as “consarn it”, “yer durn tootin'”, “dadgummit”, “durn persnickety female”, and “young whippersnapper”.

From 1935 to 1939, Hayes played the part of Windy Halliday, the humorous “codger” sidekick of Hopalong Cassidy (played by William Boyd). In 1939, Hayes left that role at Paramount Pictures, after a dispute over his salary, and moved to Republic Pictures. Since Paramount held the rights to the name Windy Halliday, they renamed him Gabby Whitaker, in virtually the same role. As Gabby, he appeared in more than 40 films between 1939 and 1946, usually with Roy Rogers (44 times), but also with Gene Autry (7) and Wild Bill Elliott (14), often working under the directorship of Joseph Kane (34).

Hayes was also repeatedly cast as a sidekick of the Western stars Randolph Scott (six times) and John Wayne (fifteen times, some as straight or villainous characters). Hayes played Wayne’s sidekick in Raoul Walsh’s Dark Command (1940), which featured Roy Rogers in a supporting role. Hayes became a popular performer and consistently appeared among the 10 favorite actors in polls taken of moviegoers of the period. He appeared in either one or both the Motion Picture Herald and Boxoffice Magazine lists of Top Ten Money-Making Western Stars for twelve straight years and a thirteenth time in 1954, four years after his last film.

    The Gabby Hayes Show (1951)

Homage was paid to Hayes in a different way in the 1974 satirical Western Blazing Saddles. The actor and director Jack Starrett, credited as Claude Ennis Starrett, Jr., played a Hayes-like character. In keeping with a running joke in the movie, the character is called Gabby Johnson. After Johnson delivers a rousing, though partially unintelligible speech to the townspeople, David Huddleston’s character stands up to say, “Now, who can argue with that?!”, and proclaims it “authentic frontier gibberish”.[5]

In the animated film Toy Story 2, the character Stinky Pete the Prospector, voiced by Kelsey Grammer, is modeled after Hayes.[6] In the film’s fictional universe, he is a toy version of a character on the marionette television western Woody’s Roundup, where he is a colorful comic relief character. In contrast, the toy is intelligent and well-spoken, a reference to Hayes’s contrasting real-life and film personas.

In a Mighty Carson Art Players sketch on The Tonight Show, Johnny Carson impersonated Gabby Hayes in a sketch with Roy Rogers. This sketch has appeared on Carson’s syndicated series Carson’s Comedy Classics, which features highlights from his years as The Tonight Show host.

Hayes was mentioned in The Simpsons episode “Radioactive Man”, in which Milhouse becomes Radioactive Man’s sidekick, Fallout Boy; the director of the film comments that Milhouse is “going to be big, Gabby Hayes big!”[7]

Every year in early July, from 1983 through 1989, “Gabby Hayes Days” were celebrated in Wellsville, New York. The event featured a street sale, square dancing, and Hayes look-alike contests for adults and children. This celebration was eventually merged into the mid-July Wellsville Balloon Rally and gradually disappeared. A street is also named after him in Wellsville, Gabby Hayes Lane.[2]

A lifelong tim-a-loy having been born 3 years before the Celtic club was founded, and living till 1969, in an interview with Shoot magizine he listed his favourite all time player as Patsy Gallagher, his favourite cup final as Quinn 3 Loan Rangers nuttin, he also liked “Sniper Hopalong Joe Cassidy”, winning the empire trophy and coronation cups as “wun in the eye for the colonials”. He says the greatest of all was winning the big cup and Stevies goal.

He is held is such high esteem that to this day there are dedicated contributers to the modern social media platforms still using his “frontier gibberish” today.

On the assistant manager issue did NFL not ask to bring Mjallby back as his number 2 only to be snubbed, presumably by Lawwell as he was in charge of the day to day running of the club at the time??

Anybody blaming NFL for the 10 in a row season failure, should read what Shane Duffy said when he was in the reading room etc, and he said,

Shane Duffy, “The crazy goings on behind the scenes at the club….?!?” what did that even mean??

….and then, timescale Duffy’s comments with the leaked news by Scottish broadcast media in late 2020 when both BBC Scotland, and STV news announced from the same autocue that,….

“Rangers would need £11 million to see out the remainder of the season!!”

Maybe the printed media reported this alarming financial news as well, I wouldn’t know as I haven’t bought a paper since, 2008, when Gerald McNee retired, which meant there was no more truth, good or bad, about Celtic in any paper since, Celtic supporters who didn’t like it up them, hated McNee because he said things that the Celtic supporting snowflake university students would rather were left unsaid, yeah, and where would that get us??Celtic supporters, and all remaining “journalists” who collectively detested Gerald McNee, let out a collective sigh of relief in 2008 when Gerald McNee retired, and all remaining “journalists” then all adhered to the script of, saving Rangers, and if that failed, the sordid ‘abuse gun’ would be held to Celtic PLC’s head to ensure they’re silence, and obfuscation about “Rangers resurrection”, just look at the shameful “NON” response from, Celtic CEO, Lawwell, on Celtic supporters behalf, Lawwell in hiding from the very loud and very persistent, agitation, of Lawwell, demanding a sit down, “live” interview on Ch4 news, with blowhard journalist, Alex Thompson, who was being egged on by, the putrid MP, James Dornan, who was screaming for justice, for abuse victims?? Imagine that!! If he cared about “sexual abuse??” then he be demanding at least half of his party colleagues, should also be dealt with justly?? The day to day , Celtic governor, CEO Lawwell, hiding like a guilty party from an easy meat, journalist, and politician, making it look like Celtic fc is a disgusting club, riddled with, “un dealt with abuse??” anybody passing by would quickly ask, “Why is Lawwell in hiding??” or, “Ohhhhh, that club must be riddled with abuse??” no?? can you imagine what Celtic cyberspace would’ve been like if, Dave King, or whoever, was terrified to do an interview with a very shouty, Alex Thompson, or the odious Dornan??” My guess is that a crowd of huns supporters would’ve kicked in the Ibrox doors and dragged King, or whoever, out and bundled him into a car, making a citizens arrest, and marched King, or whoever, into Govan cop office, and insisting he be investigated by cops as to, “Why he was looking guilty by hiding from, a shouty journalist and an MP, and making Rangers fc look as though they had something to hide, which if they did, then that was unacceptable to Rangers supporters, who now want the folk involved punished by the full force of law!! imho, that’s what would’ve happened.

But but but but, at Parkhead?? Zilch! Zero! Silence!

Maybe there was a ‘nameless’ tweet?? Who knows??

Lawwell hid from the shouty journalist, Alex Thompson, and the putrid, Dornan, who makes up stories about being threatened by hun supporters, but he can never present any evidence to back up his bullet*t claims. Imagine that! And Celtic support continue to vote for Dornan, and they also continue to financially back££££ this disaster of a Celtic executive, with the integrity of Celtic lying in tatters since, 2012, and I wouldn’t rule out a powerful person in Scotland pointing the ‘abuse gun’ a Lawwell’s napper and instructing him to play along with Rangers resurrection, or we’ll (ScotGov)?? that’s my guess, we’ll remove your club out of Scottish football until the very lengthy investigation into Celtic abuse claims (if any) has completed its forensic studies!!

If Celtic have no abuse issues, why did Lawwell hide??

Why didn’t Celtic support kick the doors in at Parkhead, make a citizens arrest, and march Lawwell into the cop office, demanding a lawyer and being advised about what to do about Lawwell’s scandalous dereliction of duty, and by doing so, made the club look guilty. Which will not be accepted by Celtic supporters.

But but but but, Celtic supporters, did, accept Lawwell’s scandalous dereliction of duty, and continued to financially back££££ a scandalous, derelict, on every issue, PLC board. Not even a placard in the car park about Lawwell’s scandalous dereliction of duty, on this disgusting subject!!!

The supporter’s who didn’t bat a single eyelid about Lawwell, stormed the the car park because, Celtic lost to Ross County, and went out of the cup, and these protesting Celtic supporters were permanent fixtures in the car park for the next 6 months of the 10 season, protesting about “the PLC frauds” and after 6 months was up, the PLC announced, Ange, as Celtic’s new puppet, the protestors called off the protests, gave the ” PLC Frauds” £666+ each, and the “REAL FRAUDS” took to their seats to sing about “The IRA” for 90+ minutes at each game since, proving their two faced ness, by waving the national flag of Kyogo etc, but not waving the national flag of Bitton etc.

The PLC are frauds, no arguments here about that, but so too are 53,000 others!!

Ange will flop, and Jack Ross will be the next puppet!!

Can you offer an explanation for why so many top managers have their own assistants?

I couldn’t tell you and I’d guess neither could you how many are considered “top” managers and how many are considered as having their “own” assistants. What I can tell you is that Alex Ferguson had 7 of them in his time at Man U so he couldn’t have been that close or loyal to them or reliant as he would have kept them on; they did not all leave to better jobs. That’s about as constant as Elizabeth Taylor or Henry VIII.

Bobby Robson did not keep Mourinho with him when he came back to the UK. despite having him with him at 3 clubs in a row. Mourinho did not move into a higher level of managership but transferred his affection to the new boss Van Gaal. So how special or lasting or necessary was that relationship?

Pep Guardiola has had at least 5 assistants and the current one is quite new, having been at 19 clubs previously and never worked with Pep before.

    Is it just an indulgence?

Of course not- there is a lot of work to be done at a club and a Head Coach needs many assistants and support workers. Ange accepted the jobs and either accepted the existing back up staf or was glad to have them – it is guess work on yours or my part as to how satisfied or dissatisfied he is with them.

What I do know is that Ange now has the power and authority to put his own team together and sack any assistants he thinks are poor and/or working against him. I suspect this summer will prove crucial in that determination. Ange has shown no lack of vigour in letting bad apples on the playing staff go or get frozen out; he will be the same with his coaching and scouting staff. If Celtic win the league, Ange will definately get to choose his own staff and we will see who gets kept on. If Celtic lose the league, I am not sure the “lighthouse thinking” supporters, who have been much in evidence since Wednesday, will let the backroom staff survive intact and maybe will not let Ange get a second chance. Fans are even less faithful to modern temporary idols than managers are.

Or do they think there is a benefit to it?

Those that are dissatisfied with their backroom staff will see a benefit in having a say on who gets appointed in their place. Those that keep on a pre-existing staff are either very comfortable in their own skin and in their own authority and don’t need to have past pals come along with them, or they appreciate the qualities in the backroom staff they have been given or inherited and are more than happy to continue working with them.

It is the discontented support that have created the persona of Kennedy and Strachan as “boardroom spoes”. Neither Brendan Rodgers nor Ange Postecoglou have said anything that remotely encouraged this tin foil viewpoint.

NFL had his own assistants the first time round. He didn’t the second time. Compare and contrast.

During both periods Neil had successes and failures with or without his “own” assistants. The win percentages for both periods were 70.04% and 70% so he was just as effective in managing Celtic. What changed was a remarkable league campaign by the Ibrox club in 2020/21 that saw us lose the title. Neil had the same backroom staff in 2019/20 when he led us to top a Europa League Group beating Lazio home and away, as he had in the following year when the wheels came right off. A primitive tribe would be sacrificing many virgins to that tmanagement team one year, and 8 months later, sacrificing all of them.

Without inside knowledge it looks like Neil showed excess loyalty to Alan Thompson and was finally convinced that others had read the situation better than him and Neil forced the issue and got rid. Why Mjallby left is more of a mystery but none of the protagonists have said anything about it, so there’s a complete vacuum into which you can insert any plausible or implausible speculation without offering a single shred of proof.

They’re all forced to sign NDA’s by the Masons and Lizard People, doncha know. FACT!
