The truth is always welcome

Last night’s result was both disappointing and embarrassing.  Considering that Bodo/Glimt were preseason and scored their third long after the affects of cramp and exhaustion took hold, it was even humiliating.  Only a remarkable turnaround will see Celtic remain in the Uefa Conference League, an outcome that would be very harsh on the comparatively underpaid and over-performing Norwegians.

When I looked at the teams left in the competition earlier this week, only Leicester and Marseille seemed out of reach.  This was a chance, I thought, to go deep into a European competition – perhaps our last and easiest chance for some time, as we hoped to compete on higher ground in the years to come.

We have both seen enough of Celtic in Europe, though, to hedge our bets.  On Wednesday, I wrote, “You and I are also full of confidence right now.  What we are missing is a test against non-Scottish opposition.  Drubbing a limp Newco gave us hope that we are watching something special.  Tomorrow night will give an indication as to whether that hope is valid.”  We have our answer.

Welcome the truth instead of living deluded.  It should fortify us for the challenges ahead, better to know, than to rock up at Easter Road next week with an unbalanced and porous midfield.  Or to think that the world has been put to right during two transfer windows.

Cameron Carter-Vickers was head and shoulders above everyone on the field.  He operated at a level Bodo/Glimt were unable to reach.  Similarly, Carl Starfelt and Joe Hart did not put a foot wrong.  Our full backs and wingers on both sides were bossed out of the contest.

Callum McGregor has seen this movie before and covered every inch of the park in a vain attempt to prevent a sequel.  Did anyone think Tom Rogic and Matt O’Riley would be an effective midfield pairing?  Apart from Ange, of course.  Daizen Maeda scored with a peach of a header but spent much of the game isolated.  I hope Reo Hatate was carrying an impediment that made his exclusion from the starting line-up necessary.  Any other reason would be inexplicable.

And for the record, Ange, no, we did not control the game.  That ability lay with the men in yellow, who played exactly how they wanted.

  1. I remember that time whem i was running the warehouse, and when i got the job I wasnt happy with the fork-truck drivers, so I brought my own.

  2. Stuart Armstrong scores for Southampton vs Everton. Hanley, Gilmour, McLean and Pukki in Norwich team surprisingly leading Liverpool at Anfield after 60 minutes.

  3. JHB Is correct people shouldn’t be jumping the gun. stand back & let things settle & then make a considered judgement.

You wouldn’t believe there was a dickhead on here 6 or 7 games into the Season saying we would be lucky to come 3rd and weren’t guaranteed a top 6 place.

  4. Martin O’Neil brought his own assistants, NFL had his own assistants first time round, BR had his own entire entourage.

They all had a better understanding of the burdens and expectations that come with managing Celtic than AP when he was appointed.

    But what would they know?

  5. Nobody I see is trying to manufacture grievance. The vast majority on here are onboard for the Ange journey.

But Ernie is absolutely correct. An assistant, a confidant who will share responsibility, ( good and bad ) whose first loyalty is to the manager not the board, is extremely desirable and advantageous to any manager.

Can fellow posters not see the benefits of Ange having his own picked assistant?

    HH.

PS : It seems that Paolio Di Canio was offered the Managers job before Ronny but turned it down as he was not permitted to bring his own assistants.

  6. Bognor about 6 or 7 games later he admitted he was feeling more confident of us getting second place,

  8. Scottish cringe — 4th stage / CFC edition.

Selective memory / slanted emphasis — B/G must be a good team because they beat Roma 6-1.

Forgetting that it was at home on a plastic pitch in the Arctic at the start of winter against a JM — losing it by the minute — team that had has squad rotation as its focus and who put up a team of benchwarmers and stiffs.

Still a good result — one we would have been proud off — but not a full blown six pointer under any set of considerations.

All of this is hyped to the max forgetting the more pertinent / relevant aspects of their Euro campaign that placed the champions of Norway in the EuConL in the first place.

Out of the CL by being humped by Legia Warsaw in July.

Hanging on against Lithuanian and Kosovan opposition in the EuConL qualifying.

And that is when they had their full team.

Consequently Thursday night was a great result for them.

I think that a case could be made that we gifted them an easy win.

Lazy habits are difficult to lose — we need to put on a show next week.

Challenge the squad to put in a performance to soften the recent memory.

Another 10% effort / focus / precision and we would have won.

The issue is that we have that and more — just a case we couldn’t find it.

A number need to be reminded that they are on good / easy money with us and we need to see value for money on the park.

  9. Some good debate and largely respectful. Always good to see on CQN.

I reckon most agree that we’re on a journey and not at our peak yet.

Despite this, anyone who actually suggests any specifics to improve is still roundly condemned.

Genuinely confused. How can we improve if we don’t change anything? Will time, alone, make things better.

For me, I’d like to see more height and strength in the side and I’d like to see a more cohesive backroom staff.

What exactly do you mean when you say Kennedy’s and Strachan’s first loyalty is to the board?

Why can’t they be loyal to both the board and the manager? Aren’t they simply loyal to the club? Why do they have to choose? As usual your anti-board agenda dictates your every opinion on here and clouds your judgement.

So what sort of situation would force the two coaches to side with the board against the manager, apart from in your head?

Ange says he is delighted with Kennedy & Strachan, as do the players. One negative result and you want them replaced, or at least demoted for someone else coming in. All because “their loyalty is to the board”. An utter soundbite worthy of the worst tabloid.

  11. MARSAPA

Correct. There was booing at full-time on Wednesday. It only lasted a few seconds.

Also, believe it or not there was booing at the half-time whistle.

  12. How quick the feel good factors deserts us , we met a very good side on Thursday night they were big ,strong and very competitive . We were all disappointed made even worse by the result elsewhere , but it’s back to bread and butter on Sunday we have the chance to put another 3 points on the board and if we don’t I‘ll be more disappointed than I was on Thursday . If I am allowed one glaring doubt regards our team it is that ange needs to start looking for some big tough as teak players because we are too small and way way too soft ,Thursday night showed it up . HH

  13. Memo for the summer — AP2.1

We need at least one CB and a LB — we have some talent in the B team but we need more than that.

We need a proper DM / pivot to fill the VW hole in our MF we have had from 2013.

We need a high energy B2B MF’er who can tackle — any takers from the B team or the SPL.

We need to have a alternative to our two winger set up — wide MF’er.

In the manner of JJ playing instead of LA.

Width is good just a case that we might be better with a more complete player — one who can tackle — in certain games.

Injuries — long / medium / short — are hurting us.

Plus we need to bench those that are not good enough to start.

CS needs some support / GT needs a footballing education / CMcG needs a new role.

The sight of AR and SW regressing at a rate of knots because they are playing full time needs to be addressed — not sure if they need more specialised coaching.

Main issue is that the squad needs new energy.

The sight of RH towing a caravan on Thursday was worrying.

He seems to have lost his Duracell bunny energy all to quickly.

45 minutes of all action followed by 45 minutes of clinging on won’t cut it.

Plus we need better / more constructive HT team talks — lull afterwards almost every week.

  20. I know you have to have a thick skin to post on here, because for sure, someone will find fault with it, but these guys that continually go after JHB – and I don’t even know the fella – because of something he once posted a long time ago – have you really got nothing better to do with your time? Post something nice, post something positive about Celtic, compliment someone, you’ll feel much better for it.

A possy of posters peering out from underneath the circled waggons waiting on that pesky JHB making an appearance.

Hes on, he’s on the jubilant cries ring out. Out come the twirling keyboards and a typing frenzy begins.

  26. I always regards European football as one of the benefits of supporting Celtic. Something to look forward to during the more mundane domestic fixtures. The atmosphere, disco light show, a real sense of occasion.

We have won one Euro trophy in 60 years of competition, two other losing finals. We are not really in it to win it but great nights and wonderful trips abroad have been experienced.

We can hope that trophy number two will come at some point in our lifetimes, or even another final. But that’s not something we have any control over. That’s down to the people that run the club, manage the team, and play on the park.

Don’t worry about things you have no control over. It is hard though, especially with affairs of the heart.

Ange is one man and has one man’s opinion.

Who is his critical friend? Who suggests a different approach? Does he have a trusted lieutenant within the backroom team?

He has performed extremely well so far. He needs support.

    ===============================

What are you unhappy with here UJ? Weds defeat.
