Time to pair Lustig and VVD in central defence

2168

This afternoon’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur gives Ronny Deila a dilemma.  Last weekend he played a second string against St Pauli, but with things going so wrong in Warsaw on Wednesday, the pressure is on to pull a game plan together which will work at Murrayfield.

Our other concern is that the squad, without Ambrose, Brown and Forrest, is already looking threadbare.  We simply can’t afford an injury to afflict Commons, Griffiths, Stokes, Johansen, van Dijk, Matthews, Lustig or Izaguirre.

The suggestion was put to me this week that we should play Lustig with van Dijk in central defence on Wednesday.  Lustig can play there, but would Ronny trust them on such an important occasion without a warm-up game?

If I was taking a risk with first-team players this afternoon it would be to pair these two.  If we’re going to get the required result on Wednesday the most important area of the team to get right is the defence.

    good point

again tho, this pre-supposes developemnt to a player/team capable of beating such opposition in the future when they are no longer reserves

the ability to recognise that they are inferior doesnt mean an ability to become superior – it could be the start of an acceptance of defeat

That wasn’t the point I was trying to make. I wasn’t meaning today’s game. It has been a bad week for the club and I’m just frustrated that we are being told to buy into the policy of developing our players to a European standard.

The fact is we are struggling to developing European standard players from our own crop. That was the point I was trying to convey.

Feel free to save this and repost throughout the next 4 days

The game on Wednesday night IS NOT ON TELEVISION.

It’s not on cooncil telly, nor any of the Sky Sports channels, BT channels, Premier Sports, the Pub Channel, Dave, Challenge or even Comedy Central.

As a matter of interest, are people aware that if you have Sky or Virgin there is a button on your handset which ACTUALLY LETS YOU CHECK ALL THIS YOURSELF…….

    JohnnyRambo,

Good shout, I remember that game, we won 5-2 after extra time. Hertz had quite a physical team in those days with the likes of Petric. We had Colin Healy, Jamie Smith, Maloney playing, supported as St Stivs says by guys like Moravcik and Jackie McNamara.

I think Lubo scored that night. He always seemed to play well against Hertz, especially at Tynecastle.

Better memory than me mate. Maybe youthful side would have been a better description, but of course you want a few old heads in key positions to help them along.

  7. One fullback I did like watching last year was left back at Cardiff, Declan John.

We have done a bit of business with them before and he has just broken into the Welsh national side.

  8. Well done to Paddy Barnes on his Gold medal today, could not but think of our wee hero when watching

If you are of a negative frame of mind and a bit of a quitter, then it can cause this effect.

Most sportsmen who reach these levels have already had to show a stronger mentality. There is no hiding place in any sport which does not employ marks for artistic merit. You know how good or bad you have been by looking at the scoresheet, the points, the time, the distance or the weight.

On the way to the top, defeat is inevitable and the top players have plenty of experience of humbling defeats along the way. People will find their level and your win:loss record helps to feed that back to you but 9 of these are young men who are going to become much better.

can you let us know when your pal phones you again.

  12. One thing I always notice against better, more expensive opposition is how slow we are in comparison. You can train players to be faster, probably a lot easier than you can train them to be world class footballers. So why isn’t this happening?

What happened to the French coach/sports scientist who worked on McGeady – he’s the only player at Celtic I’ve ever noticed gain noticeable pace.

There was a good left back at Dundee utd – gone now – we could have done some business there including one of our squad going there makeweight – we have know for over a year we needed cover at left back with a naturally left sided player – just like we have known since hoops left that we needed a goal scoring cf- now we go into our biggest game this season and none of us really know who will play there- stokes ?pukki? Griffiths ? – shameful really hh
