Tom, Dedryck and the money sloshing around England

226

There is always a worry when your players go to the World Cup.  Every scout on the planet watches every kick of the ball.  Some will have databases, some work from spreadsheet, but most have notepads full of scribbles.

Eyes will be drawn to previously undervalued talent – you bet Iran’s players will be well researched today.  Eyes are also drawn to players with little time on their contracts, which is why getting Tom Rogic signed up before the tournament was so important.

It is a truism of the game that fortunes can change quickly for players.  Three months ago Dedryck Boyata struggled to find support, apart from Brendan Rodgers, who assured us he “would improve” following a difficult afternoon at Ibrox.

Today he is the defensive pivot of one of the tournament’s fancied teams.  He also has one year left on his Celtic contract.  There will be interest in him.  Such is the market in England (on ending his Aberdeen loan spell last year James Maddison played 44 lower league games for Norwich before Leicester bought him for £24m), anything could happen.

I hope Dedryck has a great tournament and I hope he signs a new long-term contract at Celtic when he returns.  But there is a lot of money sloshing around English football right now, let’s hope it all heads to Iran.

CQN Golf Annual Charity Open

This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again.  It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.

After the golf, we head up the road to the CQN friendly Woodside Hotel for our evening meal. We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

‘Finally Brown deserves mention as he has completed 12% of ALL passes Celtic played last seasons. And 10% of them took out at least one opponent.’

Cheers, mate. Only thing I don’t like about my trips home is seeing Central Station recede into the distance.

Unlikely but lets hope Boyata turns over a new leaf and has a mistake free tournament, leading to some large bids, which we should bite any teams hands off for.

The reality is hes not a kid ironing out mistakes in his game. He is 28 in a few months, he is error prone with bad decision making and loses concentration. Leadership at the back comes from Ajer and Tierney…20 and 21 I believe. But hey Boyata is 6ft+ he must be good!

Maybe his mistakes will go unpunished and unnoticed and his value won’t be affected too much. Should still get some bids given the contract situation.

Dedryck owes Brendan a debt of gratitude, he played well after his mistake of not clearing his lines.

Less experienced managers would have hooked him faster than the CQN escape goaters.

I’d rather keep Dedryck than sell him.

Luckily for Dedryk the transfer window wasnt opened in March and defensive recruitment hasnt been plain sailing over the last couple of years.

The evidence of the matches you watch week in week out shoould be enough to tell you that KT and Ajer do not look to Boyata for leadership, and for very good reason.

Deal off – wants a clause in his contract that he doesnt have to play against Chelsea or Aston Villa apparently…

    John Terry?

    ——-

Just strolled it for a season in Championship for Villa. Huge loss to them. He is still an outstanding defender and leader.

  13. I was close!

John Terry is 7 months younger than the scouser.

He will be 38 in December.

Just the kind of player we need.

Not for me mate, English one season bling not my cup of tea I’m afraid.

If we’re buying a centre half get one we can build or defence round for the next five years would be my preference..

  15. Terry’s experience and leadership would help both Ajer and Hendry to develop. Would rather sign someone a bit more long term but can see why the manger would want his experience and leadership qualities to help or young defenders.

  16. Pleased to see Australia equalise, especially given the antics of Schmeichel. Big Tom having a decent game. Hope Oz win but think Denmark have a bit more class throughout team. Much better game than the past two days.

John Terry? If he could get us through the qualifiers, it would be worth signing him, for that alone. Are Lustig, Boyata and Gamboa even going to be available?

  17. Braithwaite coming on for…Denmark!

    Popular surname there…

    …apparently.
