Tonev arrives after a season long chase

795

A year after trying and failing to sign him from Lech Poznan, Celtic have secured the services of Aleksandar Tonev from Aston Villa.  Tonev has blistering pace, a right footer who is usually used on the left, he is an archetypal counter-attacking player.

The player’s profile blossomed during the first six months of 2013, in particular after he scored a hat-trick for Bulgaria against Malta, which brought Villa and Celtic to the table.  The step-up to the English Premier League from playing a speciality role for Poznan was, not surprisingly, too much.

Aleksandar plays the same position as Georgios Samaras, albeit he’s a completely different type of player, but we will look to him to do the same job – be an out ball away from home in Europe.

Ronny will have seen him only from DVDs, so he’ll be keen to get him onto the pitch tomorrow morning for a run-out ahead of St Johnstone.  Let’s hope the manager likes what he sees….  It’s a worry. The most promising part of deal is that Aleksandar has a point to prove, I’d rather hungry players with a point to prove than those who’ve too much on the clock.

Welcome to Celtic, Aleks.

Something went very badly wrong early on in BTM’s time as Celtic manager.

He had a very promising start.

    Developing players.

We’ve just done it with Fraser Forster. I guess that’s our proposition, it’s just the timing that is the difference with a loanee.

I’m not getting hung up on that issue. Some will stay, some will fail to impress and some will demand a return to their parent club a better player. We have to prepare for a more multi dimensional world than we were used to.

  9. Coolmore Mafia on

Tonev may be good business – probably no EPL side will want him even if he has a good season up here so we should get a clearer run at signing him.

A loan signing at centre half? Centre half is the position where you need to have a very good understanding with your fellow defenders to be successful. I’m sure that anyone who even played under 12s will know this. Long term planning is best for this area. Total bombscare idea if he is pitched into Maribor game in any form. See Karagandy away last season.

And I wonder if perhaps something triggered that chain of events?

  11. hun skelper

so if Ronni gets the boot again vs maribor all is well because he is just settling in

i assume he will go onto win the SPL (with you or me in charge we will win the SPL)

No, there is only 1 measuring stick nowadays in the hunless world that we currently live in and that yardstick is CL qualification. I guess i could accept it if Arsenal or the likes knocked us out, but 6-1 vs legia is a disgrace and a defeat vs maribor would be a severe boot in the hawmaws that would cost 20 million quid

The GB got banned because we incurred a 20 grand fine

defeat vs Maribor would be equally needless and SOMEONE should go for that

Im not being unrealistic here, im not asking for last 16, just qualification and no more

he has been handed the bonus that MON WGS and NFL would have cut your hand off for

he has no room to blow it AGAIN

  12. Moonbeams

Perhaps you are right but sometimes big change events are reactive like that.

We’ve now got to adapt and it will be painful.

I’m not surprised about the reaction but I see no positive to be taken from flagellating ourselves over the sudden departure of Neil and the arrival of Ronny. It’s happened now let’s make it work.

  13. eddieinkirkmichael

“19tr old loan signing with no option to buy totally contradicts previous statements by Ronny”

I have been paying attention. `totally contradicts` is very different from Ronny saying it was not his ideal scenario. My point concerned how people respond to various pieces of `information`. You see it as a total contradiction. I see it as not an ideal situation.

Dan Petrescu had an offer on the table from Al Arabi in Qatar.

I wonder if the money on offer played a part in his decision-making?

Not that I’d suggest for a minute that a gloating anti-Celtic Daily Record story (word used literally) has no legs.

Balde, Pukki, Derk were playing under a bad manager, despite his success against who?

Quick fix in all of this, dismiss Ronny and put John Collins as manager.

JC is a horses for courses manager, which is needed right now. Ronny is in the wrong movie but, talking about movies…looking at the big picture, the executives who came to the decision to bring in Ronny should be cleared out but, that won’t happen cos, the only thing that hey have to fear is, financial starvation from the ‘supporters’ and, as it’s obvious to anyone who employs a segment of reallity that – Celtic ‘supporters’ are rendered toothless once the ‘bored’ has their SB-money. Once a ‘supporter’ hands over their SB-money they lose the potential to be a threat ie: they lose all their power. Until that changes, apathy will kill Celtic. imho

It seems glaringly obvious that it might happen.
