Tournament of the underdogs

649

Spain were cut low by Chile, England by Uruguay, Italy by Costa Rica.  Argentina were pushed to the last gasp by Iran, Germany had to come from behind to match Ghana.  Add to this the merit badges earned by Croatia against Brazil, Bosnia against Argentina and the Aussies against the Dutch, and we have a remarkable list of performances by underdogs against countries who to some extent fancied their chances for the trophy.

The most striking feature of all these performances is the way the results were achieved.  Apart from their own dead rubber in the Nou Camp last season, Celtic beat or narrowly lost to Barcelona in a series of games over the last decade by defending their 18 yard box as though their lives depended on it.  Ventures forward were never supported by many players.  We’ve not been alone, this is the way lower-resource clubs have taken on the super-rich in the Champions League.

World Cup 2014 has seen this change.  Australia, Iran and Bosnia will head home proud of their performances, something which takes balls.  When we’re inevitably drawn against Barca next time in the Champions League, should we press them high up the field?  My feeling is, we would be slaughtered, but at one point in this tournament, we need to mature.

Ok, I think I’ve mentioned that the little things I post are, habitually, invisible to others.

Anyway, I think Al Jazeera news on my tv, channel83, is commendableat all times.

Al Jazeera refused to report the deaths of workers on the Qatar world cup building project until several reporters threatened to resign

  2. Morning all.

Most unusually the sun isn’t shining brightly. Bit overcast, to be honest. We will have had our summer, I imagine.

Things get brighter and brighter over Parkhead. Things get darker and darker over Govan.

  3. Just in to say….

When it was announced that Johnny Collins would be coming in as our assistant manager, I got the same ‘buzz’ that I got when, Jock Brown made it public that, Murdo Macleod would be be joining the the managerial set-up with, soon to be appointed Wim Jansen.

It’s just one of those feelings that ye get every now and again.

Johnny Collins would be good enough to do the top job imho.

And, I’m sure that if PL chances his arm and appears in the dressing room with new, puppet-strings then, JC would chuck it and, tell the Celtic fans why!

The jury is obviously still out on the Ronny guy but, time will tell.

The last time that I believed in anything religious was when, Gerry McNee opined that, Celtic’s Centenary year double was down to – devine intervention.

If, devine intervention wasn’t the case then, how can the following 9 years be explained?

    Anyway…Johnny Collins is ‘the’ man.

    You’ll see……

    Off oot.

  4. Morning Timdom.

  5. with todays euro draw, we can anticipate a barrage of posters all trying to be first to post on here sometime after 11am with who we get drawn against

it’s a kind of mid-article podium if you like

instead of this, i think an individual cqner should be given the task to write the one or two word post with the name of our opponents rigth after the draw gets made

there should be a list drawn up this morning of all cqners who will be watching the draw live and so would be able to do that post, and then Paul67 or a suitable understudy chooses one from that list

they can make that decision anyway they want, bribery or old pals act are both allowed to decide who gets the job

doing it thsi way will prevent overload on the cqn servers when the usual barrage of posts right after a cup draw gets made

the wee hamster (kevin) who runs on his wheel all day long to power the cqn server isnt getting any younger and cant handle the power surges at times like that

    Morning All.

Can I just publicly say thankyou to The Honest Mistake, Chris, Max, Jimmy and everyone else at the Wimbledon Celtic Supporters Club who looked after myself and big Yogi so well on Saturday. Your kindness, companionship and hospitality were greatly appreciated.

I hope all the members and visitors enjoyed the night, especially the chat with John Hughes.

I have now had the pleasure of doing a couple of these things with John and each time I become more and more impressed with the man as opposed to the player.

John tells it like it is – with room for the good and the not so good — but at all stages he makes it very clear that he was and only ever wanted to be John Hughes of Celtic.

He also has some very good arguments and rationale as to where he might have stood had he been allowed to remain at Celtic for a few more years.

I also know that in private conversation he too was very grateful for the way he was looked after.

It may come as a shock to some but where there used to be a very healthy Celtic Supporters Network in and around London, the guys in Wimbledon were very clearl that this has seriously dipped in recent years with the number of clubs in the area reducing sharply. Some have gone out of existence altogether, others have seen their memberships decline.

If there are any CQN’ers in and around London who are not members of a CSC can I suggest that you look into the possibility of joining a club.

The people I met on Saturday were great fun, great craic and interested in all things Celtic.

The Q&A’s covered all of Yogi’s career ( he was even asked how he would vote in the Independence referendum ) and at one point strayed into topics such as Res12, the SFA, Governance and so on — and in that regard can I thank Auldheid who took to the mike despite being a paying guest.

However, reasonably quickly we were brought back to big John, his career, and his memories.

Hopefully the club managed to raise some money for Evie’s fund and we collected a few bob for the Celtic Charity Foundation as well.

Special mention must go to “Jack and Victor” who brought the SPFL trophy all the way down from Celtic Park.

Again it was a pleasure to be there and chat with as many people as possible.

Best wishes and a sincere thanks to all concerned.

The Lisbon Lion’s cap issue may be a little more complicated than it might first appear.

Willie Wallace is adamant that Jock Stein had a reasonably big say in who would play for Scotland — or at least which Celtic players would play for Scotland.

When Willie was told that he would be travelling to London to replace Jimmy Johnstone in the national squad before the 1967 game at Wembley, Jock was able to say that he would be playing despite being a late call up.

Further, Willie also consulted Jock when he decided that he would never play for Scotland again. Jock them advised Willie about how and when he should go about permanently withdrawing his availability.

Yogi makes it plain that he hated the Scotland set up and didn’t want to play.

All of Bertie’s three caps came in the 50’s and he was never capped under Stein’s management.

Ronnie Simspon gained his first cap whilst being managed by Stein at Celtic.

A couple of years ago I wrote an article about this for one of Paul Larkin’s books ( before I had been given Willie Wallace’s version of events ) and if I get Paul’s permission I will put it on my Strandsky Blog and post a link here because whilst it talks about the anomaly of the number of caps the Lions got, it also highlights some other salient matters which are worth considering when thinking about this.

  12. I have often wondered about the number of Scotland caps for the lions. Be good to get another slant on it as I always thought it was the old SFA committee who picked the

  14. The truth around the SFA is and has been known for some time, no need for any revisionist nonsense, in 2010 we had a joke president who presided over an executive committee which amounted to a parcel of rogues running the game, it is to every member club shame including Celtics that this was allowed to happen, 4 years on and we have had changes in structure and personnel at the SFA, much still has to be done

  15. I see the papers have us linked with Stefan Scougall who John Collins raved about when at Livingston.

Wiki page says he is a fan of a dead club…

Livornobhoy so was Scott Brown , Paul Lambert few others too Celtic are an inclusive team. Anyone who puts on the hoops will become a Celtic supporter and their Grandchildren too : ) . Looking forward to the draw hope it is a home second leg and I will get to it, even if it is Murrayfield. Dresden looking good too we are in Prague that day how lucky is that. Taxi to Dresden.

More chance of players and the truth than

    SFA and the truth :-)

  19. I have seen Scougall play a few times for Livi. Not good enough for Celtic in my opinion. I wouldn;t argue with John Collins though who knows a lot more about football than I do. Too light and if anyone wants a comparison think Kevin McAllister and you won’t be too far away from what Scougall is like. If he costs us more than £500k here is not a lot of value there.

Does the media image suit the person ? suspect music tastes doesn’t make her a bad person

Kirsty Young’s castaway this week is Judy Murray.

A tennis coach since she was 17, she’s the current British captain of the Fed Cup, the premier team competition in women’s tennis, and was herself at one time ranked 8th in Britain – achievements worth celebrating.

But what she’s best known for is being the ultimate tennis mum. Both her sons have reached the top flight of the game – one as Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, the other becoming the first Brit to win the men’s singles in 77 years. In the moments after Andy Murray’s heroic win on Centre Court last year it was to her he turned pumping his fists and roaring – as if to say ‘we have done it’.

Judy’s many followers on social media know how she spends her time – countless hours travelling up and down the country coaching and working to inspire children to take up the game.

She says, ‘I’ve always been competitive. I’m like Andy, or maybe he’s like me – I wear my heart on my sleeve. And when something is great, then yep, I am right into it’.
