Tournament of the underdogs

649

Spain were cut low by Chile, England by Uruguay, Italy by Costa Rica.  Argentina were pushed to the last gasp by Iran, Germany had to come from behind to match Ghana.  Add to this the merit badges earned by Croatia against Brazil, Bosnia against Argentina and the Aussies against the Dutch, and we have a remarkable list of performances by underdogs against countries who to some extent fancied their chances for the trophy.

The most striking feature of all these performances is the way the results were achieved.  Apart from their own dead rubber in the Nou Camp last season, Celtic beat or narrowly lost to Barcelona in a series of games over the last decade by defending their 18 yard box as though their lives depended on it.  Ventures forward were never supported by many players.  We’ve not been alone, this is the way lower-resource clubs have taken on the super-rich in the Champions League.

World Cup 2014 has seen this change.  Australia, Iran and Bosnia will head home proud of their performances, something which takes balls.  When we’re inevitably drawn against Barca next time in the Champions League, should we press them high up the field?  My feeling is, we would be slaughtered, but at one point in this tournament, we need to mature.

  1. Ok guys and gals, I’ve done next to nil today, apart from chasing 3 escapee ducks up and down the road outside the cottage. Caught the 3 of them. For some reason I am absolutely jiggered. Just poured my 2nd rum and coke and going to watch the second half of this game in bed. :-))

    Night Night Timland.

I’ll bet you’re the only poster who’s going to bed tired because he’s been chasing livestock around all day!!!

Now, if this was an Aberdeen site :-)

Angela was invited to the event at Wimbledon by private email.

She said she’d love to come by private email.

Paul67 was copied in on these emails along with plenty of others.

When writing the blog he mentioned the fact that people like Auldheid and Angela would be there.

Angela never asked to be mentioned.

The Wimbledon CSC guys, if you check twitter today, were very pleased that she was there.

Also, she has NEVER been a sports journalist as far as I know. She worked for The Drum which is a marketing and media trade journal.

So in summary, Angela was happy to attend, the hosts were happy to have her there, I extended an invitation and Paul67 was happy to promote the fact that she had accepted. You are unhappy that we allowed her in.

    WeefratheTim,

I have exactly the same as you, a cheeky wee dark rum n coke enjoying this match not as good as the Algeria Korea game but still some good end to end stuff.

  6. Yes she is having a wee giggly, she has a relative who played in goals for Celtic … Went by the name of Frank …. He took a penalty against Aberdeen when we were beating them

8-0 (I think it was) and he missed it. Sadly he lost 9 goals at Wembley and was never forgiven ….. Personally I blamed the two diddly full backs that day….. He soon emigrated to Australia and don’t know what happened to him after that…

Mine is Morrison’s dark rum, all I had left, prefer Havana Club,or Aldi’s Old Hopking, not a great fan of white rum or Bacardi, but will drink it if no dark rum left :)

Where have I said that I was unhappy that she was allowed in?

It doesn’t matter what I think about her attendance, I merely asked why she was there, it’s in my initial post.

I’m more concerned that you feel the need to justify and excuse her article on the events at Dens Park.

She lied about us and you have chosen to reference it as ‘an off day’.

I asked you a couple of questions including why Neil Lennon left as you claimed it was to seek sanctuary as a result of sectarian abuse.

    Can you substantiate this?

  13. HT,

Ok, no idea what anyone’s said since Friday. 2014 World Cup’s been fun, but it’s just getting silly now.

S Korea, any-time we’ve seen them before, they’re Duracell bunnies.

S Korea, never lost to an African country.

Algeria, no goal in 28 years at World Cup.

    HT S Korea 0 v Algeria 3.

Every picture of Algeria’s players and manager I saw in that 45 minutes reminded me of Diego in 1986. I’ve no idea what stimulant they were on, but it wasn’t adrenalin.

    Discuss.

Anyway, on an unrelated topic cycling fans all over the world are thrilled about a truckload of Colombian cyclists ready to pedal up to this year’s Tour de France start line.

We expect them to shoot up those mountains as if their bikes have engines.

Is it a luke-warm welcome back to the bad old good ol’days?

    Time will tell.

At least the sun’s been out this week. Great.

You said that I said she representing you – where?

Re Neil Lennon I didn’t “claim” anything, I gave an opinion and one shared by many people on here. I posted weeks before he left that I had heard that this was being talked about. It may not be correct but things seemed to go according to what I had heard. Not everything can be put on the blog as you have to respect privacy etc.

Angela apologised for her Dundee article did she not? You don’t need to accept that and can hold a grudge for as long as you want. I don’t feel the need to justify anything about this other than what I said – she got it wrong, acknowledged this and made an apology.

I asked you about the comments made on here last night but you never responded.

I have explained Angela’s participation last night at the CQN event – she was a member of the audience, who was introduced by BRTH and received a round of applause. She made a mistake – we all do. Let’s move on.

I think if you read back on the blog you’ll notice that AH wasn’t mentioned as being a contributer to the London event other than in the first promo for the event on the blog. I personally wondered why this was the case but just dismissed it as being irrevelant, which it is.

I would be interested in Paul67 reasons for not promoting AH as a speaker at the event.

Did anyone think that as a representative of CQN that she would get a negative reaction from the audience?

Your statement that NL left CFC as a result of continued abuse from sections of Scottish society needs to be substantiated.

I saw those highlights you mention. . .in fact, I had posted that I was hoping they would show them in the build-up.

“Very few Celtic fans have had to take the abuse – real horrible nasty sectarian abuse – that this woman has had to take. Eventually she had taken enough and like Neil Lennon sought sanctuary in the anonymity of england. When CQN came to London she was there as one of us.”

I’m sorry but that doesn’t read like an opinion to me, that reads more like a statement of fact. Obviously, just the way I’m reading it though.

If Angela was ‘just a member of the audience’ why was she introduced?

    Was everyone introduced?

I didn’t comment on posts last night because I didn’t see anything referencing AH so didn’t think there was a need.

Do I hold a grudge over the lies that she told about me and my fellow Celtic supporters?

Do I hold a grudge because she perpetuated a myth and took an opportunity to kick us when every media outlet was doing similar?

    Yes.

  26. eddieinkirkmichael

Think winning captains was expressing his opinion that Neil left due to the abuse he received. Plenty others on here have expressed that same belief.
