Tournament of the underdogs

649

Spain were cut low by Chile, England by Uruguay, Italy by Costa Rica.  Argentina were pushed to the last gasp by Iran, Germany had to come from behind to match Ghana.  Add to this the merit badges earned by Croatia against Brazil, Bosnia against Argentina and the Aussies against the Dutch, and we have a remarkable list of performances by underdogs against countries who to some extent fancied their chances for the trophy.

The most striking feature of all these performances is the way the results were achieved.  Apart from their own dead rubber in the Nou Camp last season, Celtic beat or narrowly lost to Barcelona in a series of games over the last decade by defending their 18 yard box as though their lives depended on it.  Ventures forward were never supported by many players.  We’ve not been alone, this is the way lower-resource clubs have taken on the super-rich in the Champions League.

World Cup 2014 has seen this change.  Australia, Iran and Bosnia will head home proud of their performances, something which takes balls.  When we’re inevitably drawn against Barca next time in the Champions League, should we press them high up the field?  My feeling is, we would be slaughtered, but at one point in this tournament, we need to mature.

  1. Yep Mr.Z, Saw all the things you mentioned. We had a great guide throughout, a lad from Krakow who was with us from Berlin to Budapest. In Warsaw we also had a local guide, she was an actress who did guide work to supplement her income. She was fantastic, a big fan of John Paul 2. We stood on the spot where he addressed the crowd in June 1979, the moment she said that changed Poland for ever. Warsaw a city that suffered so much pain and destruction, still proud and undefeated.

I can remember being at the midweek away game at Stirling Albion’s Annfield when poor Danny got his injury that kept him oot for about a year and a half

I don’t post annon on twitter either, I have also had sectarian abuse. Taig of the day was directed not only towards journalists. My home address was posted on twitter as was my home phone number.

I accepted that if I was putting it out then I should also be prepared to take it, we all deal with it differently. Well done to AH for getting that sectarian imbicile convicted.

We all form opinions based on our interactions with individuals, my opinion of AH is based on my twitter account as well as posting on blogs such as Wings over Scotland.

Dundee wasn’t the only time she had a go at our support, Motherwell and the subsequent blog by Channel 4’s A Thomson left me speachless. Has she ever called Tommo out for his comments about us being the modern Millwall? The whole Huddleboard incident was taken so far out of context it was a farce.

No one is questioning her Celtic credentials but if you have a public profile and write articles on CFC and it’s fans then you are going to attract attention. If you can’t deal with it or want special treatment because you are a woman then sorry you’re not on.

I think the sound on my television must be faulty, that’s numerous games of football I’ve watched over the last ten days and I still haven’t heard The Sash !

Maybe I haven’t had to take quite the same wrath as AH on social media as she has … But neither did I accept a wage for berating my fellow supporters in the public domain! What I have to say about Celtic supporters I do so within the Celtic family. On here I carry the moniker Minx but no one has to look far to find me!

I made my feelings known to AH regarding the Swedish wolf whistles, and again when she regurgitated lies re Dundee! I challenged her and eventually the admission came. I wasn’t there I heard it from so and so and decided to publicly condemn each and every paying Celtic supporter .. But read the small print weeks later when challenged … Sorry!!

Have I been berated, have fellow Celtic fans disagree with me? Yes on many occasions but I like to keep it in house.

And that is where we are different!

For me it’s a passion, for others it’s a job.

I sat beside Evan Williams at a lunch in the seven restaurant. He was great company and his story of sorting out big Charlton in the second leg at Hampden was marvellous.

Charlton had trod on his ankle in the first game. In the return game he got his revenge with a punch into Charlton’s kidneys at Leeds’ first corner.

you must have been one of the bigger boys in the playground when we attended olsg, I was there from 67. My dad was at a night in the old church hall with the corrugated roof within the church grounds which Ceaser brought the European Cup to. Oh how he wished mobile phones had been invented earlier.

don’t think that many folk will have had Algeria to win 4-2. The (almost) remainder of my world cup betting funds are now in the hands of Portugal…. Surely they can defeat the old US of A?

  24. Dallas Dallas – no worries and I can see where you’re coming from And more often than not I tend to back the underdog. Which is why I’m generally skint.

However, I need something to give me funds to bet on the last 16 onwards. So loads and loads of shillings on Portugal…….

If Portugal win then, essentially, I’m back where I was at the start of the tournament.
