Spain were cut low by Chile, England by Uruguay, Italy by Costa Rica. Argentina were pushed to the last gasp by Iran, Germany had to come from behind to match Ghana. Add to this the merit badges earned by Croatia against Brazil, Bosnia against Argentina and the Aussies against the Dutch, and we have a remarkable list of performances by underdogs against countries who to some extent fancied their chances for the trophy.
The most striking feature of all these performances is the way the results were achieved. Apart from their own dead rubber in the Nou Camp last season, Celtic beat or narrowly lost to Barcelona in a series of games over the last decade by defending their 18 yard box as though their lives depended on it. Ventures forward were never supported by many players. We’ve not been alone, this is the way lower-resource clubs have taken on the super-rich in the Champions League.
World Cup 2014 has seen this change. Australia, Iran and Bosnia will head home proud of their performances, something which takes balls. When we’re inevitably drawn against Barca next time in the Champions League, should we press them high up the field? My feeling is, we would be slaughtered, but at one point in this tournament, we need to mature.

There was a good bit of highlights from that game before tonights match…..an all time classic and those moments were great to see again.

Aye I remember Patricia Ferns being in the Kearney CSC not sure if it was before or after the game,remember talking to Brian Wilson and John Colquhoun that night,
we travelled down and stayed in Kissimmee for the Mexico game,managed to get lost after it and were given a lift back to our digs by the local police.
one other story was back in NY the Rangers had won the Stanley Cup and had a ticker tape parade,they brought the trophy into an Irish bar we were drinking in and we managed to get some photos with the trophy,but the problems we had trying to tell the New Yorkers as to why we hated Rangers

At Danny’s testimonial v Man U in August 1980 I went along early to Celtic Park & took my copy of Danny’s (1st) autobio “Celtic My Team” to get autographed. I got numerous signatures including Tommy Burns, Johnny Doyle, Packie etc and even managed to get 4 Man U players: wee Lou, Big Joe, Sammy McIlroy and Mickey Thomas.
The one player’s autograph that I didn’t get was Danny’s . As soon as he arrived pre-match, he was sheperded through the front door: no autographs allowed.
What’s my best bet for getting Danny to sign his book, 34 years after I got everyone else?

Just settling down to watch the Portugal USA game but
sorry for going on about Seville again after my big post yesterday, but that Celtic Movement book really got me looking out my old pictures and videos again.
One of the videos was that old Blagger of Seville DVD that Eric Hughes made when he went with his brother and his mate taking his video camera with him and eventually, after about half an hour blagged his way into the stadium.
I had a laugh watching it again after all these years and it’s amazing the amount of well known people he meets and speaks to, Tommy Johnston, Billy McNeil, Jane Lewis from Scotland Today, Bob Shields, Daily Record, Dermot Desmond,he also spoke to Jim Traynor who believe it or not sounded genuinely disappointed we never won, then Chic Young the St.Mirren fan aye right, and he finally ended up in the press room holding up the Man of the Match cheque. Hilarious stuff.
