Tournament of the underdogs

649

Spain were cut low by Chile, England by Uruguay, Italy by Costa Rica.  Argentina were pushed to the last gasp by Iran, Germany had to come from behind to match Ghana.  Add to this the merit badges earned by Croatia against Brazil, Bosnia against Argentina and the Aussies against the Dutch, and we have a remarkable list of performances by underdogs against countries who to some extent fancied their chances for the trophy.

The most striking feature of all these performances is the way the results were achieved.  Apart from their own dead rubber in the Nou Camp last season, Celtic beat or narrowly lost to Barcelona in a series of games over the last decade by defending their 18 yard box as though their lives depended on it.  Ventures forward were never supported by many players.  We’ve not been alone, this is the way lower-resource clubs have taken on the super-rich in the Champions League.

World Cup 2014 has seen this change.  Australia, Iran and Bosnia will head home proud of their performances, something which takes balls.  When we’re inevitably drawn against Barca next time in the Champions League, should we press them high up the field?  My feeling is, we would be slaughtered, but at one point in this tournament, we need to mature.

“Angela is fiery, intelligent and not afraid to stand up for herself. She is a professional journalist who put on the record that she would rather pull her teeth out than work for Murdoch’s papers.”

On that I agree with her and her stance.

“She never took the heavily compromised Anderson Quay shilling either. Try making a living in journalism in Glasgow with those restrictions.”

    Again, worthy of merit.

“Many or most on here are happy to comment behind their blog name – which is fair enough. There are judges, advocates, doctors, members of parliament and all sorts on here.”

How do you know this for sure? Everyone on here knows what I do and my moniker is a pretty good indication of where I live.

On twitter I tweet under my own name just like Angela. I’m not anonymous and some of the vitriol I’ve received would obviously surprise you.

“Angela put her name to our take on the Rangers story and took the wrath of the demented.”

For which she should be credited.

“Who on here has had to endure what Angela has had to? I know of three or four stories – I wonder or have wondered why these guys continue. RTC was anonymous for a very good reason.”

I’ll show you the scars on my head as a consequence of being a Celtic supporter. To my knowledge Angela hasn’t had to endure anything like that. You have absolutely no idea what posters on here have had to endure as a result of sectarian hatred.

“Angela put her name fair and squarely on every story she wrote.”

As I’ve said, so do many others.

“She got it wrong about Dundee and later apologied – she also admitted her mistake.”

She lied about the Celtic support and what happened that night in Dundee. Initially she claimed she’d seen it, she hadn’t.

Similar comments were made by other journalists and rightly they were slated by us.

The fact that Angela is a Celtic supporter made her comments worse in my opinion.

We have a name for people like that.

“She also had a dig about those Swedish girls. As Celtic need more women and children to fill our stadium she was probably right.”

Many female Celtic supporters disagreed with Angela’s reporting of this claiming she exaggerated the events. It’s there on Twitter.

“Very few Celtic fans have had to take the abuse – real horrible nasty sectarian abuse – that this woman has had to take. Eventually she had taken enough and like Neil Lennon sought sanctuary in the anonymity of england. When CQN came to London she was there as one of us.”

So you know for a fact that both Angela and Neil Lennon sought sanctuary in England because of abuse that they’ve taken? So that’s why our manager left?

    Really?

    Can you support this theory?

When you say ‘one of us’ who are you referring to?

She certainly doesn’t represent me as a Tim.

If you mean CQN was paul67 ok with this?

“Perfect? No. A real Celtic girl? yes. I am proud to know her – despite her off day re Dundee.”

An ‘off day in Dundee’ ?

I was there, her comments were a disgraceful slight on the Celtic support.

She should be ashamed of them.

Our PP having a Mass on Wednesday to celebrate his Golden Jubilee. Asked me to do one of the Readings, chuffed. He was my School Chaplain back in the Day.

  5. CowieBhoy, as for the other question, yes I know.

But as a blog allows anonymity I’ll respect his wish not to share.

Just to wind you up mind:-)

One of us = Celtic supporter.

As un controversial a point as could ever be made on here.

There have been plenty of arguments and disagreements on here – nearly all among Celtic supporters.

You hear things at ever game you disagree with – like when Samaras or young James Forrest get the treatment or when severe bad language is used – but we are still Celtic supporters with a will and determination – faithful through and through.

A Celtic girl in London spent her Saturday night with Celtic fans – never once did she claim to represent anyone on here.

Might be better looking at CQN last night at some “Celtic” posters starting from Know What…Jock Stein…

  21. WC

If she was there as a “Celtic supporter” then I think comments on these pages and from supporters I know would suggest that certainly some of her articles are not representative of us.

You’re correct there have been many, many comments made on various forms of modern media about all aspects of Celtic.

The difference is we’re not journalists, we’re commenting as Celtic supporters.

If Angela is as good a Tim as you suggest then why make up lies and write an article about events at Dens Park when she wasn’t there?

Completely different from offering an opinion on a player’s performance.

We’ve had years of the MSM making up stories about our club and our support.

    Why would she perpetuate this?

I didn’t say that she was there representing anyone, you did and I responded.
