Tournament of the underdogs

649

Spain were cut low by Chile, England by Uruguay, Italy by Costa Rica.  Argentina were pushed to the last gasp by Iran, Germany had to come from behind to match Ghana.  Add to this the merit badges earned by Croatia against Brazil, Bosnia against Argentina and the Aussies against the Dutch, and we have a remarkable list of performances by underdogs against countries who to some extent fancied their chances for the trophy.

The most striking feature of all these performances is the way the results were achieved.  Apart from their own dead rubber in the Nou Camp last season, Celtic beat or narrowly lost to Barcelona in a series of games over the last decade by defending their 18 yard box as though their lives depended on it.  Ventures forward were never supported by many players.  We’ve not been alone, this is the way lower-resource clubs have taken on the super-rich in the Champions League.

World Cup 2014 has seen this change.  Australia, Iran and Bosnia will head home proud of their performances, something which takes balls.  When we’re inevitably drawn against Barca next time in the Champions League, should we press them high up the field?  My feeling is, we would be slaughtered, but at one point in this tournament, we need to mature.

You have got the wrong end of the stick.

When we put the event together we planned on BRTH and Big Yogi speaking. We then added Auldheid as he was by coincidence going to be in Wimbledon last night visiting his daughter. Jim reckoned we couldn’t shut him up anyway so we’d better let him speak.

Paul promoted Angela in error and the Wimbledon CSC followed this lead. Angela was never down to speak at the event.

On Neil leaving – he will have signed a confidentiality agreement so we will never know for sure. But it was clear he had had enough. Do you think the bombs, bullets, kickings, being attacked at your place of work etc etc HELPED? He has family – if he put them first good on him. I don’t have to substantiate this, thought we all understood.

CELTIC are considering a shock move for Scotland Under-21 star Stefan Scougall.

Stefan Scougall (left) played for Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final last season[GETTY]

Express Sport understands new Hoops assistant John Collins has alerted boss Ronny Deila to the Sheffield United playmaker.

Collins knows the talented 21-year-old from his time as Livingston director of football when he described Scougall as one of the best young players he has ever worked with.

Scougall has since added to his reputation in England’s League One after leaving Livi in January, becoming a main player in Nigel Clough’s side and helping the Blades in their run to the semi-finals of last term’s FA Cup.

United will scrap to keep their young Scot but know they could be fighting a losing battle if Deila wants to firm things up to make his first Celtic signing.

Blades defender Harry Maguire, 21, is also on Celtic’s radar, while talks continue with Scotland keeper Craig Gordon.

2006-2014, 49 goals and he ends up playing in the world cup.

You will need to ask the Wimbledon CSC, BTRH or Auldheid why Angela was introduced. I wasn’t there and had nothing to do with it. BRTH was in London for CQN this weekend and I am in Dublin next weekend as my part of the deal!

As I said she is a Celtic supporter. That incidentally wasn’t a requirement for entry last night. We got contacted by two older Crystal Palace fans who said that the two boys who came from Celtic were the best two players they had ever seen at their club! They were talking about Willie Wallace and John Hughes. They were there last night to meet The Bear.

I understand that you hold a grudge against Angela and that is fair enough. She did apologise though. Hope you enjoy the holidays when they come later in the week.

Can I ask you for a straight yes or no answer to the following:

“Very few Celtic fans have had to take the abuse – real horrible nasty sectarian abuse – that this woman has had to take. Eventually she had taken enough and like Neil Lennon sought sanctuary in the anonymity of england. When CQN came to London she was there as one of us.”

Is this a statement of fact?

Just to make it clear I refer to the sentence…Eventually she had taken enough and like Neil Lennon sought sanctuary in the anonymity in england.

Don’t you think on the present day Celtic should be more opened minded and inform the support?

We have seen what happens to clubs with a secular attitude!

  11. Klinsmann has them playing as a proper team. . .they work so hard for each other, and have some decent players.

  12. For the last few years in this blog nearly everyone has said they would not put themselves or there family through what Neil Lennon and his has been through. Now someone comes on and says that’s why he left and now we want absolute proof . Poor show for me . In my OPINION that had a big decision on his reason to leave Celtic.

Thanks for the reply, it did appear from a casual observer that CQN had invited AH to speak then changed it’s mind. Just being honest on how it looked from the outside WC.

On the NL leaving I think we both agree that everyone and his dug knew he was for the off, but the reasons why are not common kowledge, as far as most are aware the abuse was getting less as time passed.

Others were of the opinion that NL closing his twitter account was significant. Who knows? but it is easier for the Celtic support to deal with NL concerned with family safety rather than some tabliod expose about his private life.

BTW I’m not saying NL has been involved in anything that he has to be embarrased about, what I’m saying is no one knows, or rather, no one one will go on record and tell us the truth which is wrong. NL is a wealthy man if the reason for his leaving was as a result of our countrys intollerance then I think the fans and Scottish society deserved to know the truth.

There is a clear difference and as you have not answer my closed question I will take that you know it to be a fact that Neil sought sanctuary in England for the reasons you posted. It is either fact or opinion.

A confidentiality clause is a different issue, if there is one, which I suspect there is but have no way of knowing if there is one, unless you for a fact there is one.

I am sure you are only too well aware you have to be careful on how you say or write things as it could lead to all sorts of problems for the person saying or stating things that may not be factual regardless if there is a confidentiality clause.

Why didn’t NL leave at the height of the threats, abuse and violence if that’s the case?

I’ve been told by people who’ve spoken to Neil that the intimidation had nothing to do with his departure.

Agreed. I like cycling on TV.

The July 2015 punt is Nairo Quintano, Movistar. He’ll be unbackable next year.

2014 it’s Alberto Contador, Saxo-Bank Tinkoff, back from his dope bans.

It’ll take Froome and Wiggins combined to keep him out and that won’t happen.

Final score 2-2,Night night CQN, good to be back on here posting again after spending way too long on Facebook and Twitter. The patter on here is way better anyway, and you find out the latest news here just as quick as anywhere else. :):)

Hail Hail The Celts are here :)

  22. The blog has really gone to feguck IMHO… Seems (to me) that there are a few elitist individuals who see themselves as some kind of inteligentsia promoters whilst the rank and file are supposed to accept the unquestionable Stalinist shegite passed down by the shakers and movers of CQN… Sad, really! Had its day!… TBM

  23. Half way through WC, 32 games out of 64 now played, 94 goals. Excellent entertainment so far.
