Two significant goals

Nir Bitton’s goal was special but two goals last night were more significant.  Leigh Griffiths header for the first belied the player’s height and stature.  His scoring record with his head in recent months has been spectacular, whether darting into space to nick the ball goal-wards, as he did away to Dundee and Dundee United, or when he uses his salmon-leap to get up and stay up.

When he was at Livingston Leigh was the next hot young thing.  For whatever reason his path to the top wasn’t straight, but he’s now first choice striker at Scotland’s top club and making the most of it.

James Forrest’s goal was also full of what we want to see from him.  One-on-one with a defender, with space to run into, he did what he needed to do.  His pace took him past the defender and turned an opportunity into great chance.

Several players are finishing the season strongly.

    A wee Story.

Sometime in the 1980’s my office did some legal work for a funny wee looking guy whose name was Robert I think.

If he wasn’t called Robert then he was called Frank, but I am pretty sure it was Robert and I have no idea what his second name was though no doubt when I finish this post it will immediately come to mind.

Anyway, this guy Robert was not really someone who I had a lot pf dealings with. As I recall he might have had health problems as he walked with a severe limp and seemed to be unwell quite a lot of time.

His business was promoting bands and putting on gigs etc and for a period of time he promoted acts who had been big in the sixties and got them smallish gigs in the 80’s.

He put concerts on in places like The Plaza Ballroom and the likes.

At one point, he managed to get some American acts to come to Glasgow which is how I came to have my brief dealings with him.

On this day he came into the office and needed someone – anyone – to sign or notarise a document which confirmed someone’s identity, and to formally witness a contract.

On the day concerned he came into the office with another man. I didn’t know this other guy but what I do recall is that he had an absolutely velvet sounding speaking voice and seemed to constantly wear a beaming big smile.

It was very quickly apparent that no one else was available to witness the contract and so I was pressed into service to witness the contract being signed by our client and one Benjamin Earl Nelson — only Benjamin Earl Nelson signed the document Ben E. King — and I then had to certify that I had seen his passport (in the name Benjamin Earl Nelson) and add a small caveat that Ben E King and Benjamin Earl Nelson were one and the same.

I didn’t really spend much time with the man and only remember the speaking voice and the big smile but he seemed a nice bloke.

If I recall correctly I was offered a free pass or two to go to the gig but I politely declined which I now regret.

God rest him– Ben or Benjamin, King or Earl — or whoever.

There were various editions of The Drifters but Ben E King sang lead vocals on one of their most famous hits.

As everyone throws up Stand By Me I will post another we tune so this is Ben E King and the Drifters.

  6. Careful With That Tax, Moonbeams on

Just got lynched with a bunch of marauding Glasweigans, in the gala in Rothesay .. Went for a hit and miss and had to do a huddle and rendition of walk on before a could empty ma bladder .. They all seemed genuinely elated .. They were in a proper Tim boozer .. With the Irish ballads blasting oot :)

  7. IMO the really significant goal against Dundee was Scott Brown ‘s goal.

The fact that every Celtic player touch the ball on the way to the goal shows the development of Ronny Deila’s Team and is a great credit to his influence in a Celtic team who are fit ,skillful, fast breaking , improving rapidly in style, confidence and playing football the way it should be played. The Celtic Way.

Thank you Peter Lawwell for bringing Ronny Deila to Celtic Park.
