Untenable position for SFA president as drama unfolds

917

Campbell Ogilvie’s appointment as president of the SFA was always controversial.  As general secretary and director of Rangers, Ogilvie was the club’s chief administrator during the final 11-year period they refused to employ Catholic footballers.  In many other walks of life, this background would make him an embarrassing relic of a former era, but in Scottish football it was enough to see him promoted to the ultimate honour position.

He remained in position at Rangers long after the new regime of Sir David Murray arrived and set aside the decades-old sectarian employment policy but left the club in 2005, joining Hearts as operations director two months later.  All of this puts the SFA president in central position regarding the on-going tax tribunal, which is charged with deciding if Rangers illegally evaded tax from a period starting in 2000 and going on well beyond Ogilvie’s departure.

If the First Tier Tribunal finds against Rangers the SFA must ask for Ogilvie’s immediate resignation.  The association cannot have a president embroiled in a tax evasion scam which, even before a verdict has been decided, has already caused untold harm to his former club and the reputation Scottish football.  The scale of the damage to public finances has yet to be definitively established but it will not make good reading.

The SFA has just embarked on its first proper investigation into whether directors of a football club, in this instance Rangers, are fit and proper persons to hold such a position.  Office holders at the association cannot exercise power over the game if they are not subject to the same standards they demand from clubs.  Pending this investigation, and the outcome of the tax tribunal, Ogilvie should temporarily step aside.  Scotland is not yet a banana republic, public bodies must have robust ethics and must not allow the shadow of contagion to be cast over the body charged with ensuring legal and moral standards are adhered to.

The SFA has some enormously important months ahead.  Its president is currently in a position to influence which course it takes and, if the tribunal verdict falls against Rangers, could be implicated in the scandal which precipitated the crisis.  While I am sure Campbell Ogilvie will be shown to have acted with impeccable ethical standards, the SFA must quickly establish a structure clear of contagion.

  1. Bank of England chief Mervyn King: standard of living to plunge at fastest rate since 1920s

Households face the most dramatic squeeze in living standards since the 1920s, the Governor of the Bank of England warned, as he reacted to the shock disclosure that the economy was shrinking again.

“In 2011, real wages are likely to be no higher than they were in 2005,” he said. “One has to go back to the 1920s to find a time when real wages fell over a period of six years.

“The squeeze on living standards is the inevitable price to pay for the financial crisis and subsequent rebalancing of the world and UK economies.”

miki67 – some sinister undertones to your post @ 14.33. You have no right to say who does or who does not have the right to be a Celtic fan. The body armour stuff is not on. Argue with his points instead of firing insults mate. Reel it in you are doing yourself, and your own politics, no credit.

Some of the political comments around unemployment and those who are presently suffering were offensive so im sure the poster concerned can take it as well as give it out

  8. Amazes me how even the most intelligent of people are still taken in by the political system. It’s a big game used to divide and conquer. And with it’s allies in banks and big business it seeks to maintain the population as tax slaves. The most depressing thing for me though is that i don’t have faith in it ever changing as there isn’t the collective belief or will to bring about permanent, beneficial change.

    There is always hope though.

In the meantime i’ll continue to take pleasure from our bhoys impressive winning run and the marvellous, malevolent mess that is Dignity FC.

RANGERS boss Ally McCoist is facing a player crisis this week – even if club administrators spare his Ibrox stars the axe.

McCoist could be without no fewer than EIGHT first team players for the difficult SPL game against Caley Thistle in Inverness on Sunday.

Gers midfielder Maurice Edu will miss the match in the Highlands after picking up a booking in the shock 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock at the weekend. It was the sixth time in the 2011/12 campaign Edu had been yellow carded and he has now been hit with an automatic one-match suspension by the SFA.

His loss is a massive blow to McCoist as the US internationalist has been one of his team’s best performers in recent weeks.

And the Rangers gaffer, who saw a host of players head out the exit door in the January transfer window, will also be without other key personnel. Left back Sasa Papac will also miss the showdown with Terry Butcher’s side after getting red carded for a bad tackle on Liam Kelly against Killie. And Dorin Goian and Kyle Bartley are both highly doubtful for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match as they are currently ill. On top of that quartet, McCoist looks set to be without long-term absentees Kyle Lafferty, Steven Naismith, Jamie Ness and Steven Whittaker.

The Light Blues gaffer already has a threadbare squad and he will work frantically at Murray Park in the coming days to cobble together a side for Sunday. Meanwhile, McCoist will hold showdown talks with Rangers administrators today in the hope of saving the jobs of his players. The club legend last week emerged as the public figurehead of the world-famous Glasgow institution’s fight for survival.

And he will be at the forefront of events this week as the men with the future of the 54-times Scottish champions in their hands look to make cutbacks. McCoist is set to meet with representatives of London-based firm Duff and Phelps to discuss what, if any, savings need to be made on the playing side.

However, with the administrators refusing to concede defeat in the bid to sign Gabonese striker Daniel Cousin he is hopeful there will be good news. He said: “I have got very, very important meetings coming up with the administrators in terms of the future of the club. “And that is the most important thing, the future of the club and the staff within the club. We have to move ahead positively. “Fraser Wishart (players’ union representative) has been fantastic with our playing staff and I have also got meetings myself with the entire playing staff. “I have also got meetings with other staff. I want to let them all know that my door is always open if they have got any question they want to ask. “I am in dialogue with the administrators and there are reassurances required for the youngsters and all the playing staff at the club. These are tough times.”

Meanwhile, McCoist has revealed that mentor Walter Smith, who he succeeded as manager at the end of last season, has been in constant contact offering help and support. He said: “Walter is as disappointed as the next Rangers man. He was out of the country last week when the news broke, but he called – and woke me up!

“He will be back very, very shortly and I have no doubt him and I will be having conversations. He is a great friend and knows this club.”
