Victor’s £1m a light amid utter insanity

1847

You want some good news? Around £1m of Tottenham’s money for Victor Wanyama will find its way to Celtic, which will offset some of the economic impact of this morning’s news. This aside, there is only bad news. If we want to buy footballers priced in euros (or anything other than GPB) they will cost more money. We will also have to pay higher wages to be competitive with European clubs.

Goods will cost more – it will start today with fuel and travel, then food, electrical goods and everything else. Wages will buy less (not just less-able footballers). Borrowing repayments will be higher. Business expenditure, wages and employment will drop, so will the tax take – and money available for welfare spend.  The poor always pay the highest penalty.

If you are rich enough and without a mortgage you can indulge in flag waving all day, happy in a delusion that self-determination even remotely exists in modern economies. Or that more self-determination over here, and a little less over there, is a panacea. It’s not, it’s just another economic crisis coming your way soon.

The entire political class have failed us. Calling a flag waving referendum was a grubby attempt to hold onto power by the prime minister; this mess is his making. Whoever succeeds him will have to successfully pander to the same party membership in order to get elected.

Jeremy Corbyn’s mealie-mouthed campaigning was an embarrassment. His “7 out of 10” backing for remain did what it was supposed to do: convince people he was going through the motions for something he didn’t believe in.

Who’s ever heard of a leader winning support for an issue he is prepared to back 7 out of 10 himself? He should go, but political ego will ensure he’ll hang around to make sure Johnson wins the next general election.

It took six days for the Greek government to abandon their own disastrous EU referendum mandate. Instead of attempting a rescue, all our political ‘leaders’ will give us is more populist power grabs. It’s already underway.

The election of Jeremy Corbyn was a necessary corrective to a party that had chased the ground of central blandness.

I get that Blair and Cameron with their smooth slick presentations appear “electable” and that Jeremy Corbyn lacks that quality. If we want to just play the “electable” game, we should ask Daniel O’Donnell to lead the party and be inoffensive and bland.

Blair was electable and Brown was not though they occupied a similar position in the invention of New Labour. It wasn’t just dodgy looks that cost Brown his Electability: it was the fact that the Murdoch Press had struck their deal with Blair only and all bets were off after that.

Neil Kinnock was an electable politician but became unelectable because of a monstering by the same Press that ran our democracy in their heyday. When he intervened to help a young lady being mugged, the story in the press did not portray a “have-a-go” hero but instead ran with “Is this the man who should have his finger on the nuclear trigger”.

We can chase electability by trying to barge into the middle ground and by seeking to make your policies as interchangeable with the Tory Left and the Lib Dems as you can. But the right wing will remain occupied and, in order to keep chasing the centre, after you have abandoned the left, you have to move ever rightwards. Before you know it, you are approving the Iraq war and a raid on pensions because the press will, if you’ve done a deal with them, portray you as tough.

Jeremy Corbyn has to stay, even at the risk of losing the next election. After all, the Blairite set that are trying to get power back, were the ones that lost the last election. They have not altered their habits and they are no more acceptable to the public or the media. If they win this palace coup, the only change that will happen is a lot of returning party members and union members will just become pissed off with financing a party that they cannot influence. A party which will just say, “Trust us- we know what to do to become elected- and the first thing is to lose all that left wing socialist stuff- it plays badly with the media and they influence the public”.

Sometimes, you need to stand by your convictions and try to persuade and sell them to the electorate. Jeremy Corbyn may have to go as leader sometime, after all he is 67 years old, but we cannot retreat back to a Chuka Umunna or Yvette Cooper because, that road too leads to irrelevancy. I am in favour of jeremy Corbyn winning the current battle because it means the party members and the union members will have won. Then, in our own time, we can elect a younger successor who does not have the Blairite baggage or the untrimmed beard/ donkey jacket/ welsh windbaggery etc; that are so readily monstered and for which we readily swallow.

I have France/Grizeman at 20s, would have loved MON and the bhoys to have held out today, also got Grizeman top goalscorer at 9s, that Athletico Madrid know how to dig out a striker (he cost them €30m) had a wee saver on both teams to score in the Ireland game at 2/1 so have covered most of today’s losses……surprised Mueller hasn’t scored (yet) but like the 75m Germans they could be celebrating on July 10th ….

I asked the Mrs if I was allowed a serious bet on France to win the Euros before the start of the tournament, she gave me one look and said “don’t be ridiculous” she is only happy collecting my winnings

  4. Skrtel reminds me of the big mean looking guy in school who thinks he’s a footballer.

  5. All the traitors who have resigned from the shadow cabinet should be hunted from the Labour party, never socialists in a million years.

Self serving scum of the highest order.

  6. I think France will now get found out, Germany, Italy or Spain all stand in the way, which is bizarre as a France v Germany final was the shortes price pre tournament , I think.

To be honest I never even considered Griezman but that was just stupidity on my part.. No surprise there.

My Grizeman/France bet was down to luck, I didn’t think Giroud would start, my top goalscorer bet was placed at half time in the opener against Romania as Grizeman had hit the wood work twice, as another poster mentioned today, he seems to find space (Larssonesque) plus he had a great season with Atheltico only behind Messi & Ronaldo…..always follow strikers that score goals

  9. Jeez, there’s nearly been more promises of Armageddon since the Euro vote than in 2012 when the Huns croaked.

Suddeny, everyone appears to be in hysterical lament about the comforting and abundant European utopia we were wallowing just a few days ago…

If there was a mechanism to remove every one of those plotters from the Labour Party it should be invoked now. Make no mistake this is the last act of treachery from the Blairites and it will be they not Corbyn who find themselves as unelectable. Let them resign their seats and fight by-elections as Independents, every last one of them. And lose! Tories in absolute disarray, and yet these Quislings choose now to desert, not just the Shadow Cabinet, but the Party itself. Traitors one and all!

I worked at the 2016 Holyrood election as a vote-counter. The spoilt papers are recorded by number per category . . . No mark on ballot paper, multiple choices selected, voter identification details present, selection ambiguous, void ballot paper.

Even if you clearly mark your selection, but write a slogan or any other message, it is classed as void.

Some of the messages people write are so childish and bizarre, eg “They’re all arseholes” and such like. The thing is, the counting staff are working so fast and seeing thousands of papers, once they read the message and put it in the “spoiled paper” box, the message is gone and forgotten.

Also, under election law, once counted and signed off, the ballot papers are locked back in the ballot box and destroyed after a set time, i thinks it’s 72 hours. In those 72 hours, nobody is allowed access to them, so any political message will only ever be seen by the counting staff. No message or other info can be recorded, so it’s a waste of time.

Now that participation of the Irish in Euro 2016 has come to an end and their star players have been identified, which ones do you expect are looking to take a massive drop in wages and are slabbering in anticipation of signing on the dotted line at Celtic

Really. Policy without power is useless. Maybe the new middle class champagne socialists can financially afford to be so principled but the poorest and most vulnerable cannot.

We need a labour leader that can win an election now and implement policy I am not convinced that as nice and principled as Jeremy is he will be able to deliver what the poorest really need and deserve.

SFTB I enjoy reading your posts but cannot agree with you on this.

If there’s a recount, or a recount is considered, the spoiled papers will be scrutinised very closely.

And ballot papers are retained for a year, in case of a legal challenge (each person’s voting slip can be identified).

I’m afraid that your analysis though correct on many issues fails to address the key element namely that to influence events a party needs to be in power.

Trade Unions might enjoy having a compliant friendly face at the top of the Labour Party, however if that face is constantly on the Opposition benches, then their members will be getting royally shafted. How does that advance their cause?

We had Thatcher and Major for nearly two decades, while people on the left consoled themselves with telling the world they were right and everyone else was wrong.

To me it’s a bit (just a bit) like those CFC fans who trumpet the “playing football the Celtic way” ahead of CFC actually winning things!

Brown spent so much time plotting against Blair and vice versa that in the end they lost sight of their real enemy, the Tories!

For me the Labour Party remains the only party that as actually created a better environment for the broad mass of people in this country.

Like football, politics for me is tribal, so I will always vote Labour because that’s the way I was brought up, same as I was brought up to support CFC!

That might be unpopular to some on here who have been seduced by the siren song of the SNP, however sooner or later they will have to wake up to the reality that the SNP are a shower of parochial shysters with pretentious way above their ability!

My goodness have you ever had the misfortune to meet some our current Ministers?

We had until recently an Education Secretary that could barely string a coherent sentence together!

They will try their best to emulate the Leave campaign by waging a relentless neverendum based on emotion rather than fact, since that would destroy their arguments!
