Victor’s £1m a light amid utter insanity

1847

You want some good news? Around £1m of Tottenham’s money for Victor Wanyama will find its way to Celtic, which will offset some of the economic impact of this morning’s news. This aside, there is only bad news. If we want to buy footballers priced in euros (or anything other than GPB) they will cost more money. We will also have to pay higher wages to be competitive with European clubs.

Goods will cost more – it will start today with fuel and travel, then food, electrical goods and everything else. Wages will buy less (not just less-able footballers). Borrowing repayments will be higher. Business expenditure, wages and employment will drop, so will the tax take – and money available for welfare spend.  The poor always pay the highest penalty.

If you are rich enough and without a mortgage you can indulge in flag waving all day, happy in a delusion that self-determination even remotely exists in modern economies. Or that more self-determination over here, and a little less over there, is a panacea. It’s not, it’s just another economic crisis coming your way soon.

The entire political class have failed us. Calling a flag waving referendum was a grubby attempt to hold onto power by the prime minister; this mess is his making. Whoever succeeds him will have to successfully pander to the same party membership in order to get elected.

Jeremy Corbyn’s mealie-mouthed campaigning was an embarrassment. His “7 out of 10” backing for remain did what it was supposed to do: convince people he was going through the motions for something he didn’t believe in.

Who’s ever heard of a leader winning support for an issue he is prepared to back 7 out of 10 himself? He should go, but political ego will ensure he’ll hang around to make sure Johnson wins the next general election.

It took six days for the Greek government to abandon their own disastrous EU referendum mandate. Instead of attempting a rescue, all our political ‘leaders’ will give us is more populist power grabs. It’s already underway.

  1. Had a bit of a crazy day so decided I’d post a comment on CQN to relax myself. No one is talking about the ‘tic, so it had to be politics or dots. I decided to go all high brow, so dots it is.

40 Misc dots left scattered around the various sections, plus 80 in Section 445 and 122 in Section 416, making a grand total of 242 dots left. Think we need a big signing to clear the remaining dots, or a Statement on Res 12. Uh Uh shouldn’t have mentioned the “R” word.

Kuenssberg is reporting leaked information presumably from inside the Labour party. Ultimately Corbyn’s colleagues , party members and the voters will determine his fate.

I expect that he will never be PM.

The BBC employs the daughter of an ex Labour leader in a prominent role and many others who are not anti Labour.

I am typing even slower tonight as I fractured my arm today in a fall from a wet grassy bank. So don’t expect War and Peace size replies from memfor a while. Sighs of relief all round CQN.

One post on Celtic coming up! Just give me a minute to compose it.

  4. Reading the uncompromising, entrenched, polarized political opinion on here reminds me why I detest the entire shabby chapeau that masquerades as government.

A hysterical sideshow designed as an opium of the masses.

Let’s all trade insults dressed up as debate and get hot under the collar while Rome burns.

The world banks are already stealing our grandchildren’s inheritance while we bicker about our myopic belief systems that they brain washed us into to begin with.

Look around and see the misery around you and tell me it’s not true.

  5. What is Celtic`s objective and how do `we` proceed in an attempt to achieve it?

Is our current squad strong enough to win the title in Scotland? Almost certainly.

To qualify for the CL Group stage? Probably/Possibly.

To qualify from the CL Group Stage? Probably not.

How, then , do we make the second` almost certainly` and the third ` probably`?

Obviously, a top class Manager and a couple of `class ` players would help. We have certainly tried something in the Manager stakes but what about incoming players? Therein lies the real problem. Players good enough to make a big enough difference cost a lot of money. Also, of course, these players are only really necessary for CL games so does it make sense to splash out? Would the calibre of player required to make a difference want to come to us in these circumstances?

You are in charge at Celtic. What, realistically, would you do?

Sorry to hear of you injury, however….

It is not just their background that I am complaining about: it is their bias.

If you think that Sarah Smith or any other political correspondent with a Labour background has ever displayed bias then let’s see the evidence. I have always found her to be completely professional: a journalist first on TV and radio and a daughter of a Labour politician in her private life. I remember Bernard Ponsomby, then a Labour man, absolutely destroying the candidacy of a Labour politician (Bobby Gillespie’s da) live on TV and I have little doubt that he would let his current pro-SNP tendencies get in the way of attacking a Natalie McGarry, say.

In contrast, I have no doubt that Laura Kuennberg is conspiring with disaffected Blairites to do down Jeremy Corbyn and that she will show little interest in highlighting the in-fighting on the Tory side.

It’s a bit like Celtic and Rangers minded reporters. One side gets to be fans with typewriters and the Celtic “fans” have to prove their neutrality by being even tougher on Celtic than the Blue nosed journos are.

It’s a shite state of affairs indeed. Coldplay’s Paradise distracting me from it.

  8. JJ-

Not a popular strategy amongst the suits no doubt, but sprinkle the team with older proven performers who have run the course. Those that would be happy to embrace Paradise and the support in the twilight of their careers.

Spread the enthusiasm of youth around them and go at it full tilt.

I just googled that and watched 12 min vid of unbowed & unbroken- Tyrone prisoners stories

I have had the pleasure of working next to Sarah Smith.

She is a consumate journalist who takes crap from no one, and is an all-round top woman. The fact that I got an unexpeted kiss from her at her leaving do has in no way coloured my vision

  12. SFTB

meant to add as I never had the [pleasure of meeting Macanbheatha I would not know if he was on .

  13. SFTB, Eiri na Greine , Is a Tyrone ex prisoners Organisation. I know there is a video ” unbroken & unbowed” which I haven’t seen but believe is about ex Tyrone Prisoners.

I have never met Macanbheatha and have only conversed with him on these pages. I know Mac an Bheatha is the Irish for McVeigh and I’ve seen from the tributes that his first name was Sean. Also from the tributes I picked up he was from The Short Strand in Belfast. I have been trying to find his Death Notice as if I could I would attend his Funeral, but in truth I’m only guessing at his correct name. If he does feature in any videos I would dearly love a link to any of them.

  14. Wonder what would be the reaction if we found it difficult to sign anyone on note before CL qualifiers?

Can Brendan improve the inherited squad sufficiently to negotiate the rounds?

What kind of new player can we afford – transfer fee & salary?

Is there support for the club to take on a substantial amount of debt?

Maybe the appointment of Brendan will turn out to be have been the easiest part of our renaissance.

  15. SFTB

I merely pointed out what she is reporting and never alluded to bias by her or Sarah Smith or anyone else. The mention of Sarah Smith was to add some balance to your initial reference to Kuenssberg’s background .

Your view that there is a conspiracy is no doubt honestly held but not mine.

Chris Bryant has also resigned from the Shadow Cabinet now.

  16. Laura Kuennberg.

My missus reckons she has a mouth like a cracked pie.

    Dont think she likes her

  17. Sin City Bhoy

Any suggestions re older players and who they would replace?

    JJ

  18. JJ- I see the press have us linked (I know, I know) with Kolo Toure, so maybe Brendan is ahead of the game on this idea.

    Players of his ilk.

I’d have him in a heartbeat. You?

  19. JJ-

Another obviously is the afore mentioned Zlatan, with his wage demands, I realize this is pie in the sky. Although to my shame I thought the same over Brandan taking the reigns.

Can you imagine wee Leigh buzzing around Zlatans quality up front? Mouth watering.

  20. Hrvatski Jim

“Your view that there is a conspiracy is no doubt honestly held but not mine. ”

I believe you did feel there was a conspiracy in Nick Robinson’s reporting on the IndyRef but, I already spoke for my own view.

There can be no “conspiracy” without bias. The BBC is just as entitled to employ journalists who were Tories as they are to employ any demographic. If they all do a professional reporting job with neutrality and an investigative bent for all news, whether it harms their side or not, that is fine.

That is why I explained that I didn’t feel your mentioning other journos with a Labour background was either relevant or necessary unless there was bias involved with their reporting. You seem to have assumed that i was complaining about Tories getting jobs at the Beeb but the place is full of them. My concerns were about them being biased not being Tories.

I never met macanbeatha in the flesh that is why I asked the question. I may have put 2 and 2 together and made 5 in spotting a text/tweet from Gerry Adams about a recent death of an ex-Republican.

It may not be him that was speaking on the EiriNaGreineTyrone site but there were some inspiring memories of the life endured by the blanket men and it is well worth listening to.

  22. SCB

I don`t really know enough about him to give an opinion but I WOULD like a big, solid centre half to play alongside Erik. I am quite happy with the rest of the team but Lustig`s availability/fitness is a concern.

As I suggested above, though, our problem, as I see it anyway, is the dilemma that the CL gives us. As far as Scotland goes, we don`t need any new players at all. Even a Griff injury would not be catastrophic judging by our performance against Motherwell!

  23. Mats:

Can Brendan improve the inherited squad sufficiently to negotiate the rounds?>>>> I would ask myself can the squad improve itself to negotiate the qualifying rounds? The raw material is there. Attitude, application and confidence is required. BR needs to instil that very very quickly. If he does then qualifying goes from 50/50 to 70/30.

What kind of new player can we afford – transfer fee & salary?>>>>>get rid of some players and work to having the same wage bill but with a smaller squad.

Is there support for the club to take on a substantial amount of debt?>>>>>>>>>no.

I have never mentioned Nick Robinson on here. Must have been another poster.

I must retire to my chamber now to rest my aching bones.

  25. I would think the solution is a two-tier team system.

A set team for European games that feature the older heids and then a league team that gives the experienced legs a rest.

    Mix and match as required.
