Walk with Shay 1

Incredible pieces of Celtic History that you could win

As you may already know, we have 2 Celtic tops (1 home and 1 away) signed by the last 11 Club Captains of Celtic Football Club spanning the past 53 years of our unbroken history, from Billy to Broony. These items have been professionally designed and framed, containing all the players’ relevant stats. These truly are two of a kind and are a once in a lifetime opportunity to be the proud owner of.  The signing of the tops took us around 18 months to achieve and the journey and story behind this was amazing. We plan to share this story with you over the coming weeks.

signed away strip

We are also delighted to announce that the money raised from the Captains tops (and other special prizes) will not only support Shay but also the wonderful work of the Celtic FC Foundation.

This is our plan

The WalkWithShay Campaign is now fully registered with the Licensing Board to run lotteries (raffles); and we are planning to hold our 1st raffle where the First Prize will be the Away Club Captains top, together with many other great Celtic related prizes.  The draw date for this raffle will be 25th May 2017 (no need to remind you of the significance of that date). We need help to sell our raffle tickets for £5 each and spread awareness before then. Yes, that’s right, you could win the Away top for just £5!!!! The Home top will be raffled/auctioned or sold at a later date.

This is where we need your help…

We’re looking for

67 Supporters Clubs / Groups / Associations / Online Communities/Businesses/Establishments or super Individuals to each sell up to 50 (Lisboa) tickets @£5 each

This will form our Green Battalion

and

67 individuals to sell up to 10 (IAR) tickets @ £5 each

This will form our White Battalion

You are of course all welcome to sell more or indeed a smaller quantity of tickets, if you so desire. Regardless of what you sell (or buy) we really appreciate your support.

We would like to have all our sellers registered before Monday 3rd April, which is when we plan to go live with the sale of our raffle tickets. There is a bit of work here to ensure we comply with our license, so please contact us now.

Please help us recruit by sharing our story with your family, friends and colleagues.

Will you Join Wee Shay’s Green Raffle Army?

Are you able and willing to help and support this amazing initiative? If so please email us at walkwithshay@yahoo.com or if you are on Twitter send us a direct message @walkwithshay we are also on Facebook.

Thanks for taking the time to read our update and we really hope you can support Shay and his young family.

Yours forever in Celtic and thank you for Walking with Shay.

    Yes it’s striking.

I obviously didn’t understand the Gaelic and had to look up the lyric translation.

I did French and Italian at school but to this day I rue the lack of Gaelic classes at school in the 50s and 60s.

I was almost as if the educational establishment was deliberately suppressing and killing the language.

I think it’s more than likely the Gaelic language was deliberately suppressed , I think the potential unifying effect of the celtic culture was/is anathema to the establishment.

    Gordon

    Lustig Boyata Svietchenlo Tierney

    Bitton

    Forrest Brown Armstrong Sinclair

    Dembele.

Personally, I would give GMS another go in place of a recently below par Sinclair and would also consider starting with Le Griff.

BTW I’m no expert on celtic culture by any means .

Seems like there were similarities between the celtic nations through their artwork and sculptures, yet they all had their own language which gave them their own identities and diversity.

Agree on most if that but I would put PR in place of SS ( looks in need of a rest ), like to see Jozo get some game time as he would add a bit of aggression and composure in possession.

Think Griff deserves a chance too and

    Help that bhoy out.

  14. The return of Big Tam will be most welcome.

A major strong point of his game is that he can take a pass with his back to goal and roll his marker either way.

As much as i love Sinky and am loathe to pick a fault in his game, i dont think he is very good when he gets faced away from goal.

Its took a while for teams to get to grips with him and us as a team but man marking Sinky and keeping that man tight to him means he struggles.

Id say Armstrong is similar and it was a reason we did not get the best out of him when he was played out left and further forward.

Anyway the thing is…….theres not been as much of a threat in that no. 10 area without Rogic and i feel it has allowed our opposition to double up a bit more on the wings in an attempt to cut out the threat from there and i rekon his return will see a bit more freedom for Sinclair and Teirney and either Forrest or Roberts.

  15. I have absolutely no complaints about the revival of the Gaelic Language in Scotland but let’s not get too revisionist about the influence of the dastardly English or collaborating teachers on this. Her is an extract from an Ian Jack article on the subject:-

“How far would I need to reach back to discover an ancestor who spoke Gaelic? Perhaps to what in England would be called the Chaucerian era, perhaps to never: Scotland has a complicated and sometimes uncertain linguistic story that includes Norse and the Northumbrian variant of Old English in the east, as well as the Gaelic that arrived with Irish migrants in the south-west, all of them eventually replacing a form of Celtic or Brittonic language that still survives in contemporary Welsh.

For five or six hundred years Gaelic did well and expanded aggressively across most of Scotland, but it began to lose the competition with Scots-English as early as the 13th century, and then began its long retreat to the Highlands. By 1755, Gaelic speakers numbered only 23% of the Scottish population, which had shrunk by 1901 to 4.5% and 100 years later to 1.2%. Today about 60,000 people speak it, most of them concentrated in the Western Isles, and all of them bilingual in English. ”

“Successive Scottish governments, anxious to stress an independent national identity, have made Gaelic a key feature of difference to England, and many would agree with Mackay that to care for a language that emigration and industrial economics so nearly wiped out is the mark of a civilised country.”

“Dual-language station nameboards, for example: eventually every Scottish station will have one, no matter how little the place was touched by Gaelic at any time in its history.

Recently, rattling through the Glasgow suburb of Cardonald, I noticed a new name on its austere platforms: Cair Dhòmhnaill. Which traveller would this help? None. Is it historically appropriate? No. In the 15th century, a Norman-sounding gentleman owned the lands of Cardownalde, which almost certainly derives from P-Celtic rather than Gaelic. Does any of this matter? Yes and no. According to Mackay, the sight of a Gaelic nameboard far from his home in Lewis “refreshes a part of my soul” and reminds him of Gaelic’s fullest extent. More materially, it helps the tourist trade by rewarding visitors with the sense of the difference that all tourists seek; Mackay says the translated Gaelic menus in his local Indian restaurant in Inbhir Nis (Inverness) vanish for this very reason.

But I feel saddened by it. What I remember of Cardonald is the old Flamingo ballroom and council estates that were well thought of. To me, Cair Dhòmhnaill is a kind of instruction to focus on a far more distant history, like one slice of a many-banded core sample pulled from the earth, which has an arguable usefulness, and may very well be false.”

That’s a far more realistic position than the one adopted by the poster who asserted the non-importance of the currency question, as he urged people to ‘have faith’. That’s a long way from making a case. Again.

  18. Well that was the week that was after Celtic dropped a whole two points.

We could win the league shortly just in case you missed it, amid the real race for SMSM second, Brendan Rodgers seems likely to me to leave his side pretty much as it was throughout the amassed record points lead slump.

Celtic faded out of the game last week , and were madhunned all over, but as BR said, ‘we’re not robots.’ contrary to other opinion I think we were poorer in the middle when Nir Bitton went off, and though he toiled in the first half with that laconic style, if he’s to be replaced, it has to be by someone better, and steelier please.

Callum MacGregor is more mobile but that’s about it, and we must do more especially if there is any semblance of a European dimension, where the qualifiers loom. The appointment of a new John Park is a good sign, but Celtic must continue to shop in Harrods for marquee players, that’ll fair keep the accringtons of shinebox fc down.

James Forrest Gary MacKay Steven and Paddy Roberts are all left scrambling at Lennoxtown for a starting jersey , but outwith the players who’ve already virtually won the league and a cup, there is no one chapping at the door for a game, he couldn’t drop Dembele for Griffiths could he?

If Jozo Simunovic was fit I’d play him to partner Boyata, and rest Dembers just to reaffirm something he already understands ‘Celtic are the making of him.’

    Fixed odds

  20. SFTB,

There has been a concerted effort for revisionism in all minority languages in these islands. With limited success.

In Scotland despite flinging money , resources and raising the profile enormously the amount of Gaelic speakers have fallen.

Of my two grandmothers, one from Ireland and one from the Western Isles ;the one from the isles only spoke a Pidgin English. Gaelic was her first tongue. However She was even more determined that her offspring would be more equipped for the modern times, hence Gaelic was never a priority.

Yes I remember the many conversations between fellow Gaelic speakers, the priest, the doctor etc often over a few drams, however unfortunately to this day all I remember is the swear words.

I do totally embrace the “refreshments” aspect of the numerous conversations though.
