Warning signs observed, creative issue lies ahead

640

What warning signs there were, were observed. Last season Qarabag beat Salzburg (who then won at Celtic Park), drew home and away with Twente and Saint Etienne, drew at home with Inter, and beat Europa League finalists, Dnipro. Remotely disrespect their challenge, and you’d leave Baku empty handed.

I think we would be over-generous to either team to make too much of the chances on show. James Forrest had the goal at his mercy, before choosing to make a pass, which, if it got through the immediate defender, would have found a heavily marked Leigh Griffiths, but shots from distance don’t count.  This was a game without real chances.  It also provided some evidence that James Forrest’s confidence is not where it once was.

The defence scarcely put a foot out of place but the performance of Stefan Johansen and Scott Brown was pivotal to the outcome. Johansen disrupted Qarabeg high up the field, showing incredible energy levels in that heat. Scott Brown held a deeper position throughout and got himself in the way of Qarabag repeatedly.

We had nothing going forward. Gary Mackay-Steven was put on his bum a few times early on and looked to be suffering heat-exhaustion more than anyone else. Nadir Ciftci was isolated, again, but the hoped-for link play didn’t materialise. He needs a link player. That’s a problem for another day. Between now and then, you and I have a Champions League play-off draw to worry about.  Once we know our fate we can worry about being more creative.

It was an absolute treat again to see the Celtic FC Foundation logo, this time on the first choice jersey.  Magners could have put their bottled water brand there instead, but they get what this relationship with Celtic is all about.  The help they’ve given our Mary’s Meals, school kitchen appeal is further evidence of this.

Our competition where you can win a Celtic third choice (bumblebee) top, courtesy of Mangers, closes at 14:00 THIS AFTERNOON.  To enter, email celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the country Mary’s Meals have built four CQN school kitchens in the subject line of your message.

If you can cope with the excitement of also sending a £1 or £2 to the appeal while entering, you can do so here.  Thank you.

You need to credit my uncles from both sides of my family.

They and a neighbor, James Deighan took me to my first games in 1954.

A 4-1 win against East Fife at Celtic Park and a resounding 6-0 thumping of Airdrie at Broomfield on St Patrick’s Day 1954. We were on an unbeaten run which secured the flag with Jock Stein, Sean Fallon and Neilly Mochan playing important parts just as they did 23 years later.

Despite having spent decades overseas, you never lose the faith, and on my returns home Celtic Park is always on the itinerary.

  7. For the draw would be looking to avoid Malmo and Maccabi Tel Aviv

Best draw I think would be either the Albanians or Partizan Belgrade

    From the Herald.

    http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/football/13580349.Qarabag_s_dirty_tricks_fail_as_Celtic_prove_to_be_almost_pitch_perfect/

FK QARABAG ordered their pitch not be watered for a total of more than 14 hours before kick-off before their Champions League qualifier against Celtic.

We understand the Azerbaijan club told their groundstaff not to put water on the surface from 7am on the day of the game.

It is also believed that Qarabag trained on their pitch at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium on Wednesday just hours before the match, which ended goalless and saw Celtic qualify for the Champions League play-off place.

The decision to keep the pitch as dry as possible was a clear tactic which Qarabag hoped would count against Celtic.

The pitch, of which so much was talked about before the match, was in dire need of water and the dryness contributed to the ball bobbling about. When Qarabag trained on the ground it was believed to be 30c.

Celtic to their great credit dealt with these conditions and Ronny Deila was delighted not only with the result, but also the backing given to his team by the 200 supporters who managed to make themselves heard in such a partisan atmosphere.

Speaking to the club’s website, Deila said: “I’d like to thank all our fans who supported us so brilliantly at the match.

“I know there were a number of fans living and working in Azerbaijan and it was obviously a rare chance for these fans to see the team in action.

“I also know that many more made the very long trip to Baku, not an easy journey but our fans were there once again.

“It is magnificent wherever we go in the world to know we have such tremendous support and I can assure you that this makes a big difference to myself and the players.

“Knowing that we have our fans in the stadium giving us such passionate support is something which we are so grateful for, it is what makes Celtic such a special club.

“The atmosphere was fantastic, a credit to both sets of fans supporting their respective clubs. We played a very good team with energy and some great players but over both legs I think we played well and deserved to go through to the play off stages, an achievement which now lets us look ahead to the draw with excitement.”

  15. In full anticipation of tomorrow’s draw, here are the details from UEFA.

    http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2268720.html#uefa+champions+league+play+draw+lineup

The 20-team lineup for the UEFA Champions League play-off draw, streamed live in our DrawCentre from 12.00CET on Friday, has been set with the end of the third qualifying round. UEFA.com has the full lowdown.

    UEFA Champions League play-off draw

    Play-off number crunching

    League route

Automatic entrants: Valencia (ESP), Manchester United (ENG), Bayer Leverkusen (GER), Lazio (ITA), Sporting CP (POR)

Third qualifying round winners: AS Monaco (FRA), Rapid Wien (AUT), Club Brugge (BEL), CSKA Moskva (RUS), Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)

    Seeding

The teams with the five highest coefficients in each route – this applies to both League and Champions – will be seeded and drawn against the other five teams in that route. To determine each tie, one side apiece from the seeded and non-seeded pots will be drawn and placed in another pot, with the first of the two to then be picked out at home in the first leg. The seeding pots will be confirmed on Friday morning.

    Matches

Ties will be played on 18/19 and 25/26 August, the ten winners joining the 22 clubs automatically qualified for the group stage.

    Draw facts:

    • If Valencia win their play-off, Spain will be the first nation to have five clubs in the same group stage.

    • Borussia Mönchengladbach could be the 11th different German side to compete in the UEFA Champions League group stage, one more than France and behind only Spain on 13.

    • Astana are the only remaining European Cup debutants.

    Previous winners in play-offs

    Manchester United (1968, 1999, 2008), Celtic (1967)

Financial authorities are warning the over-55s thinking of withdrawing equity from a pension to beware of fraudsters offering amazing returns in unregulated areas.

The two specific ‘investment opportunities’ mentioned were…

    Fine wines,and South African property.
