Warning signs observed, creative issue lies ahead

640

What warning signs there were, were observed. Last season Qarabag beat Salzburg (who then won at Celtic Park), drew home and away with Twente and Saint Etienne, drew at home with Inter, and beat Europa League finalists, Dnipro. Remotely disrespect their challenge, and you’d leave Baku empty handed.

I think we would be over-generous to either team to make too much of the chances on show. James Forrest had the goal at his mercy, before choosing to make a pass, which, if it got through the immediate defender, would have found a heavily marked Leigh Griffiths, but shots from distance don’t count.  This was a game without real chances.  It also provided some evidence that James Forrest’s confidence is not where it once was.

The defence scarcely put a foot out of place but the performance of Stefan Johansen and Scott Brown was pivotal to the outcome. Johansen disrupted Qarabeg high up the field, showing incredible energy levels in that heat. Scott Brown held a deeper position throughout and got himself in the way of Qarabag repeatedly.

We had nothing going forward. Gary Mackay-Steven was put on his bum a few times early on and looked to be suffering heat-exhaustion more than anyone else. Nadir Ciftci was isolated, again, but the hoped-for link play didn’t materialise. He needs a link player. That’s a problem for another day. Between now and then, you and I have a Champions League play-off draw to worry about.  Once we know our fate we can worry about being more creative.

It was an absolute treat again to see the Celtic FC Foundation logo, this time on the first choice jersey.  Magners could have put their bottled water brand there instead, but they get what this relationship with Celtic is all about.  The help they’ve given our Mary’s Meals, school kitchen appeal is further evidence of this.

Our competition where you can win a Celtic third choice (bumblebee) top, courtesy of Mangers, closes at 14:00 THIS AFTERNOON.  To enter, email celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the country Mary’s Meals have built four CQN school kitchens in the subject line of your message.

If you can cope with the excitement of also sending a £1 or £2 to the appeal while entering, you can do so here.  Thank you.

Wanted the sheep to go through so that they would be fighting on 2 fronts, same as ourselves.

Wanted the sheep to go through as they are a Scottish team.

Sorry bhoys – had to nip out and missed your reply. Didn’t have an issue with Saturday’s decision was where I was coming from. More an issue with a simple concept going round in never ending circles.

Ohits, aye back here – missing the time off. Belladrum after work tomorrow. Busy day ahead. Need to makelans for a meet either up here or down your way….quite fancy Espana!

  6. Just watched the Dons game.A bit unlucky. The Kazahks very good defensively. No mugs whatsoever. If Astana are better could be one to avoid.Have to say,the play acting and time wasting was ridiculous, along with another howler of a referee.Mc Ginn had a shocker.Skenderbeau for me ,hopefully.

  8. Starry- what was Thicos rationale (yeh I know) for placing McInnes on a pedestal above Ronny.

Genuinely interested as I didn’t read/hear his comments.

Dons out-to be honest i did think they were running out of ideas from 30 mins into the game. However i suppose the best manager in the spl will now concentrate on the league?

Logan whom we all know and love -looks a no bad full back albeit on the small side-do think (for what its worth) that the result will certainly make them harder to beat over the season. Other than their full backs there was not a great deal of pace defensively the centre backs -taylor missed his calling he looks (taylor) made for a deid team we all used to know!

Congrats to the team responsible for the new look blog! HH

  10. Hope the guy doing the St Mirren tweets has got CCTV on his property , we all know Ra Berrs don’t like the truth .

  11. Enzothebaker- was only joshing.

But on a serious note…..if you post one more comment you will have broken the lurker code and can no longer be part of that illustrious – if somewhat secretive – clique!

You are seriously comparing the SNP with Hitler’s Nazi party?

Dear me, you really have issues.

You’ve lost the plot mate, don’t think I’ll ever be able to take anything you write seriously again.

I smoked my (hopefully) last fag exactly 6 years ago, my start date was the 7th but I lit one up at 10pm and went into a fit of coughing and finally thought F*** this .

If ye enjoy a fag batter in ,if yer thinking of stopping it can be done.

sorry for the wee boast but it still amazes me I did it.

The sheep are nowhere near as good as they or the SMSM think they are. Nor is their manager.

They were lucky against D.U. at the weekend and realistically are further behind Celtic in terms of quality and ability than they were last year.

A good chance they’ll win feck all again this season, despite having the manager with the Chic Hun seal of approval.

I watched some of the Arabs v Sheep game on Sunday and listened to that game on Radio Shorty tonight, I thought Willie Miller gave a good unbiased account. I may be wrong but I don’t think the Sheep will be troubling us much this season.

  16. AoW, I’ve heard about these cliques it sounds like a dark world that draws in unsuspecting lurkers ;-)

Shame about the sheepies would’ve been nice having another Scottish team experiencing European football until Christmas.

  17. See that wee space to the left of your now green name?

Trying to allocate little images of Lions & legends to each poster. Some of us will have to share. I bags Willie Wallace, Lisbon Lion…

  18. Enzothebaker – that’s you bumped mate!

Just imagining all the lurkers raging in the background :-)

Surprisingly…..I did want Aberdeen to go on a run…..for purely selfish Celtic interest.

I wanted to see them stretched, their players knackered from trooping around Europe. You know, like we do.

The media, managers and journalists who vote for MOTY never take this into account because we are the BIG club.

Had they done well in Europe I believe that they would have done well to finish top 6 in SPFL.

    IMO

  19. Delighted to be able to get back on the blog, error free and thanks to Paul67 for his speedy reply to my enquiry yesterday.

Firstly, congratulations to the Bhoys on a solid performance last night on which could have been a real banana skin. A real disciplined professional performance.

Also happy to report my Dad’s health appears to be on the up( I’m sure last night’s result helped)

His pneumonia has all but cleared . He also suffered a mild stroke, but progressing well.

Thanks to all who had him in their thoughts and prayers.
