Weighty comparison for Ntcham

667

Roy Keane played 13 games for Celtic and the first two of those were memorably for a disastrous performance and result away to Clyde, then what looked like an out of shape performance by the former Ireland international at home to Kilmarnock.

The remaining 11 games of his Celtic career were a lesson on what a great central midfield player looks like.  This was an era when we had recently seen Champions League winner, Paul Lambert, and Neil Lennon, play central mid, both masters of their craft, but Keane fulfilled the role better than anyone I had seen in a Celtic shirt, even as a 34-year-old.

There’s a video of his solitary performance away to Rangers (@FocusOnCeltic), where he asserts himself effortlessly, a lesson on how it should be done.  I watched a similar video of Olivier Ntcham against Newco on Sunday (@CelticBible).

The obvious point should be made.  The Rangers team of 2006 that Keane faced had players like Barry Ferguson and Dado Prso, and had a proper manager, whereas the team Olivier Ntcham faced are not of the same calibre, nor were they at home, but you and me have watched rubbish Oldco/Newco teams over the years without seeing such a complete performance from a Celtic central mid as Olivier’s.

Last month I suggested we drop Olivier and pull Callum McGregor deep, as the former’s passing and effectiveness was off the pace during the qualifiers.  He was one of several subject to bids and contract talks over the summer.  A clear head seems to have elevated the 22-year-old’s game to a new level.

The King is in town, get along to see Henrik and pals do their stuff at Celtic Park tomorrow.

  1. This Jordanes fellow deserves a bigger following:

“Jordanes, a Goth writing in Italy in 551, a century after the collapse of the Hunnic Empire, describes the Huns as a ‘savage race, which dwelt at first in the swamps, a stunted, foul and puny tribe, scarcely human and having no language save one which bore but slight resemblance to human speech.’ “

From about 2002-2005 I would regularly be in The Players Lounge,Swindon. Before and after the match, and at half-time we would mingle with some well-known types who were over to watch the game for various reasons.

Met some really lovely guys, from an FA Cup winner with Everton in 64 to Mick McCarthy who was just a gentleman and happy to sign my programme, and address it to my sister.

I wasn’t in there to be star struck, usually I would allow others to initiate the conversation. But I went off one person instantaneously and that was Joe Jordan

Arrogant arse, ten seconds to flourish a pen over the programme, told me to f… off.

First time for everything,I suppose. Probably the first time he’s been called a f…..g a……e in public too-and not just by me.

I’ve no experience of the guy at all. Sounds like one of the ones Jordanes was describing.

The only similar experience I had was with Gary Player at Turnberry when I was about thirteen. Obnoxious didn’t cover it.

Still, karma being the bitch that she is,he got ripped off by King of the caddies

Does the heart good when that happens.

Btw,my Dad was marshalling at Turnberry one year-he’s a regular freeloader on these things!-and his hero Jack Nicklaus belted it off the tee.

As my Dad commented-great shot,Jack-it took a fade into the rough

Just logged on to FB and saw Bobbio, been out of the loop for a few days.

Can’t stand International break and to see McLeish fill the Scotland team with huns makes me barf.

When you think of Big Jock, the magnitude of the man, the dignity and the vision of the man, it really brings home what the FTSFA are doing and have always done to our game.

We’ll never see Jock’s like again in our lifetimes:((

  10. Curious about the references to the colour of the Scotland strip on Friday, I had a look on YouTube. Looked the same as ever to me.

Anyway, I have seen a few post on CQN laying fault at the door of Craig Gordon for two of the goals. I didn`t see it that way. McGinn ASKED for the ball; Gordon obliged; McGinn failed to control and Belgium scored. Later, Hazard hit a rocket which was simply too quick for Gordon.

I didn`t blame him for either goal and though he made some good saves.

As one with no national fervour whatsoever,I am probably more inclined towards a Scotland defeat tonight as I feel they represent the SFA and the Establishment rather than the ordinary Scottish people.

The big fella is a free agent, he’s a different option up front, 12 month contract, I’m all for it…?
