What chance we see rival SPLs next season?

1081

I wonder if we will see two rival Scottish Premier Leagues next season?  We could see a SPL consistent with the threats made to SFL clubs last week, let’s call it SPL Loyal, with Hibs, KIlmarnock and a few others.  They would sit atop a feeder league containing whoever they could attract from the SFL and Sevco, who due to fan power would be excluded from the top division, no matter how few teams that division had.

Meanwhile a rival SPL could setup, let’s call it SPL Solvent, with Celtic, those from the Gang of 10 who realise they are better-off participating in a league which is likely to survive until next May, along with the teams who last season finished near the top Scottish Football league.

SPL Solvent would make no threats to exclude SFL clubs who were due promotion on merit, and would therefore attract the balance of SFL clubs; which is likely to be the overwhelming majority.  This league would contain the only club with the ability to underwrite the commitments needed to bring broadcasters and commercial partners on-board.  It would also be free of, moral and ethical questions, where clubs are united with their fans on what it means to organise sporting events.

It’s not the worst idea floated in recent weeks.

  1. COPS could save more than £1million next season because it appears Rankers will not be in the SPL next season

Each of the four clashes between Rangers and Celtic costs taxpayers around £280,000 for extra officers. the games recently have hit the taxpayer harder due to Rankers non payment of taxes

And the criminal justice system could also save tens of millions because courts will not have to deal with trouble linked to the powderkeg fixtures after Gers are demoted.

A senior police source revealed: “It’s a huge amount of money that we won’t have to spend at a time when times are tough. For every Old Firm game you are looking at 500 to 600 officers in and around the ground.

“You have officers in every division on standby in towns and villages in case of violence after the game. There are anti-disorder patrols and all these cops are on 12-hour shifts.”

Strathclyde Police said Rangers’ demotion — which is due to be rubber-stamped next week — was still “speculation”.

  4. I’ve just listened to Çesc Fabregas saying that if people think that what the Spanish football team is boring then they don’t understand football. I agree. Their performance last night, especially the first half, was one of the best displays of ‘the beautiful game’ I’ve ever seen. Outstanding. I know that there are people better versed in their analysis of the game than me who would disagree and I’d like to know why. I can only say what I saw…and it was incredible. Spain ran Italy into the ground…..Italy being the team that humbled Germany, the team that was expected to stroll to victory.

So what does that say of Spain’s performance? I thought it was amazing.

Anyway….good morning all from a sodden Dorset!

  6. Mining and property magnate Gillespie, who has a string of famous friends, was declared bankrupt last week after he claimed his net assets were zero.

He picked up the leased Bentley Mulsanne from the Grassicks of Perth car dealership and showed it off at Gleneagles.

A witness at the Perthshire hotel said: “Everyone at Gleneagles knows Gillespie. He is larger than life and has always been very flashy.

“I think the Bentley was a bit of bravado to offset him losing face over the bankruptcy. He was saying that

this was the perfect car to get if you were going bust.”

Gillespie, who has three convictions for assault, was made bankrupt after a former friend, Gregg Ross, launched a legal action to recover a £500,000 loan.

The tycoon’s biggest creditor is the Bank of Scotland, to whom he owes more than £8million.

Gillespie was once one of Scotland’s richest businessmen and a major Rangers shareholder.

His friends include Sir Sean Connery, snooker champion Stephen Hendry, football legend Graeme Souness and former Rangers owner Sir David Murray.

Spain did very well last night – but they were boring against Portugal, -not much better against France- just as they were in the World Cup Final against Holland.

Italy allowed them to play because Italy came out to play. Portugal did not and Spain couldn’t beat them. Holland tried to kick them off the park. (I wonder why – perhaps the presence of an English Ref encouraged them to be more physical and they almost got away with it. Last night, Portugese officials – virtually no “tackling.” There’s a whole lesson there for Scottish football when playing on the European and World stage and the need for our Refs to apply the modern interpretation of the rules on a weekly basis.)

If any team could have taken Spain to penalties it would be Italy. The fact is teams know how to stop Spain, but Spain find it very difficult to deal with them.

I’m not saying they are not a terrific side – but it’s not as straightforward as Fabregas might think.

It’s an interesting debate that a team who has now won 3 major trophies in a row culminating with a 4-0 win in the final can be classed as “boring” but despite their brilliance, there are times when they can come unstuck and the tippy tappy passing just doesn’t break down resolute sides. (I’m sure we have all seen that with Celtic in SPL!!!)

Neither France, nor Portugal were anywhere nearly as good as Italy but they had game plans and were able to snuff out the Spanish threat. Italy actually did this in the opening game but last night, they were just taken apart.

Really good teams can do that.

I’m not saying Celtic are as good a footballing side as Spain but in comparison to the SPL, Celtic are as far ahead of the others as Spain are in the national game, but just because you are so much better than the opposition, it doesn’t mean you will win every game and play well in every game.

I’m actually glad that Spain were able to produce that kind of form in the final as it shows them up for what they really are, one of the best teams in history. yes, there will be times when they will be stiflied or when they do just enough and no more, but when they get in the mood, they are a match for any team in history.

I actually think they would give the Lisbon Lions a really good game, probably not beat them but give a good showing (but then the Lions are a lot older now).

wtf today i see that the payments made by the spl to the sfa is being questioned and every sfl club stands to loss 60k. ok, but i was sure the contract between spl and sfl regarding this payment was safe no matter what.

scottish youth football will die without rangers, he does know that clubs get financial support to run youth systems and the less money that is coming in means that there is greater need to bring in your own players, oh and football is not all about coaching kids to death lots of team are out there right now, out with the elite system.

all these clubs will go bust without rangers so there must be a rangers? OMG are you mad, rangers are bust because they lived out with their means for 2 dacades (at least) so why would the other clubs not simply cut costs as and when/ where required? akin to anyone else. clubs will only go down if they continue to spend more than they bring in and a dont think many of the sfl clubs will be doing that.

i honestly think rangers should be placed in the 3rd division and should be happy with that. if scottish football wishes to change league structure then thats what should happen, what i dont get is why keep putting forward awful ideas that no one wants when you could come up with a solution that would see rfc newco in spl in 2 years time, subject to back to back promotions, with a simply change from 4 professional leagues to 3. most fans and clubs would accept that newco should not have any punishment from oldco if they started from the bottom
